Accepting Yourself

Happy Freakin’ Friday!

Welcome back to another edition of Friday Filosophy, coming to you this week from Bogota, Colombia where I’m conducting a training event.  Each issue I challenge you with a question, topic, or idea you may want to think about. Today that topic is seeking acceptance.

For most of us, beginning at the earliest stages of childhood we seek acceptance from others.  It probably began for you when your parents were training you with reward-based behavior.  (I saw a potty-training product for toddlers pitched on Shark Tank, that was similar to how some trainers house train a new puppy.)   Next you learn how to get approval from Grandpa and Nanna, and your aunts and uncles.  Of course, by the time you reach high school, you’re so neurotic you’ll do almost anything to fit in and be considered one of the cool kids.  It becomes a lifetime pattern.

One that guarantees a life of insecurity, unhappiness, and misery...

Living a life of prosperity requires a complete rewiring of your brain, moving from seeking approval from others to becoming comfortable in your own skin – developing confidence in how you live your life.  The approval that matters is internal, not external.  Instead of desperately trying to conform with what society considers acceptable, you’re steadily moving toward becoming the highest possible version of yourself. Freeing yourself from the fleeting conditional acceptance from others empowers you to accelerate your path to fulfillment, wisdom, and enlightenment.  It’s like jogging after taking off a backpack filled with 100 pounds of rocks.

  • You don’t feel the need to virtue signal every time you perform a compassionate deed.
  • The idea of injecting Botox into your face repels you.
  • You stop trying to win arguments and start debating to discover truth instead.
  • Instead of paralyzing yourself by seeking endless advice, you get into action.
  • You don’t get your worth from the number of followers you have on social media.
  • You’re not afraid to say ‘no.’
  • A holy book is no longer required to know how to act in challenging situations.
  • It’s no longer necessary to tear down others to feel worthy yourself.
  • You understand the virtue of selfishness.
