Your Self-Portrait

Posted By: Randy GageMay 11, 2011

Ask the average person what their strengths are and they might offer up one.  Ask them what their weaknesses, defects or flaws are, and they probably give you a laundry list.

So what if I asked you?

Do you have an immediate data dump when asked what’s wrong with you?  And if so, how do you change that?

Stop looking backward.  Who you have been is not nearly as important as who you are right now, and who you are becoming.  See what you are going to do and become.  This fresh self-portrait is an important part of letting go of limitations and embracing your greatness.

It’s Wednesday, so this must be Santiago, Chile.  It’s my first time here, so I’m looking forward to exploring a little.  The pic shows the Andes overlooking the city.

  1. Wow!The Pic of the Andes is brilliant.Spread your message,Randy.I get it,everyone should.

  2. I know that my strengths have always been that I can relate and build rapport with people. I have also always felt in my gut, and i've had moments in my business that I can passionately speak and guide someone. On the flip side, i've been in a battle with my own self with my beliefs, limitations, as well as the mistakes i've made by not doing the things necessary to take myself to the next level. As I write this , i'm in a stunk in my business that for reasons of my own making have held me back. I absolutely don't get it at times of what holds me from what I'm capable of. I have sprints and jolts followed by setbacks and moments of inactivity and it something I NEED to figure and eliminate once and for all. Thank you though Randy your blog does help.

  3. Randy!!!

I'm glad you are here, in Santiago. Welcome!!!
I wish you could visit the south of the country, it's just beautiful, or the beaches and deserts....but maybe in other time.
    I'll see you tonight.

  4. "Don't look back. Something might be gaining on you." Satchel Paige ( one of the greatest American baseball players in American history.)

Another one from Tony Robbins which I love is " The past doesn't equal the future.' This can been a great help as I have noticed some people love to remind you of your past failures, especially your family and those closest to you. Only you know the greatness that lies ahead and when you are in that transition stage, and success is just around the corner this is worth remembering.

  5. More words from a champion -
"I skate to where the puck is going to be, not to where it has been.
    Wayne Gretzky, Ice Hockey Champion

  6. It's funny how as soon as people see a camera their reflex is to smile regardless of how they may really be feeling. If we were to do a self portrait and portray the real self which only we really know - would there be more light or more shadows - would the sides of the mouth be up or down and how much light would radiate from those eyes? And how different would that self portrait be if we were the person we knew we could be, If we knew we were living up to our potential, if we had invested a day in Randys coaching?
BTW - I am not on a commission for this post!

  7. I'm all strengths and I have no weaknesses. Just kidding.

When I began studying and implementing various Personal Development ideas over a decade ago it was to change my so-called weaknesses.

Since that was all that I focused on that's all that I got.

Now,I mainly focus on building/improving my strengths since that is where I will receive the most abundance from.

  8. Randy, I am watching your prosperity TV and I enjoy it!Question; In those "thinking green" days of organic ecology taking care of climat things, what is that then, according to the prosperity consiousness?Because some wise (wo)man told me that a dirty poisoned earth does not come headpart from farms who poison but from low consioussness and poisoned thinking and ideas.Sounds more true to me.What about you?Have a wonderful time in Chile and southamerica!

  9. Thank you, Randy! Needed that today (Of course!). Well on my way changing that situation you describe.
Pictures of South America are beautiful!

  10. From months ago, I started to see and imagine my future. I forgive me in so many ways and started live with love for me and for others. That change the way I see the world. Focus on the positive things and working on what must be change! Thanks!!
PS: Did you like the book of Patagonia? 🙂

  11. You are right Randy, so many find faults with themselves instead of strengths... It's as if though fault finding is a sign of strength... It's not.
I found that so many around me are so unhappy with themselves and their lives that in order to relate to them I was tempted to enter their waters and experience their misery... I actually experimented with that and found it unnatural, unplesant and dangerous. It's like a swamp that sucks you in... And one has to be a strong swimmer to get out of it.

You asked a very good question that made me sit and think if I had any weaknesses... What I came up with is that I do not have weaknesses... That is unless my inability to relate to many because I do not think like them, could be considered as a weakness... Which I think not.
So, I am perfect and love life with everything in it.

    Thank you for the thought,
    Victoria

  12. I've just learned (yesterday) to ask myself a new question: "What is right with me?"

Re the Past: If in every adversity there is the seed of an equivalent benefit, as Nap. Hill tells us, then we can dig in the Past like a mine: There's GOLD in there! Ask: "What was good in my past?" (when was I powerful, successful, smart, resilient...?)

Oddly enough...we find what we look for; we manifest MORE of what we focus upon. I am focussed on "learning how to manifest/allow my brilliance."

Thanks for this post, Randy. I attracted it!

  13. Thanks for the reminder Randy!
I always hated answering job interview questions: "What are your strengths" because it is a loaded question. How will your strengths benefit their box.

What I have found beneficial to me is to define my weakness, immediately relate a strength that could eradicate it & begin saying that to myself out loud while looking in a mirror. Elementary to some, but it has created a positive influence in my life. I'm forced to focus on strengths whether they are outwardly apparent or not. What I focus on expands & I prefer to focus on strengths - seen or unseen- rather than weaknesses!

Associations with people who operate in the strengths I aspire to develop is perhaps the greatest tool I have ever found. Some of them had worse obstacles to overcome than I, yet they overcame them indicating I can too!

    Enjoy your trip!

  14. Actually, just tonight, I've changed my selfportrait. As in my profile picture. I held back to my looking thing and feeling succesfull picture for 5 years. Now I'm being just me. Perfectly the way I AM now...

  15. It is amazing.Everytime I meet a new human being I keep saying;it IS amazing. So many,so different,so fantastic. There is no reason to be negative.Think of all we CAN do,fullfill, become. It is def a miracle.I WANT TO look at myself in the mirror and say I AM A MIRACLE.And what I CAN BECOME is even a bigger miracle.Randy, you are a miracle!Thank you!!!

  16. Randy, Thanks for the reminder. As I look in the mirror now, I'm surprised at what I see. When I was in my 20's I used to look in the mirror and complain about what I saw. Now I would give anything to have that outside picture looking back at me.

I've worked very hard on my weaknesses, so what were once weaknesses are now strengths.

  17. If you can't say something nice about yourself.... We would not put other people down, well not most of us anyway, the way we internally bash ourselves. Words are so strong and they condition our subconcious mind in a huge way. You must speak to yourself with love. You need to be the most imporant person in your life, with the exception of Jesus,. Treat yourself like you treat your best friend. Choose your words wisely and speak to yourself with respect. This is why affirmations are so important. Do them every morning and then smile at yourself in the mirror and say, I love you with a huge smile on your face. You are an amazing person. Who cares if it looks stupid. Do it for 30 days and see how much better you feel. A great book to read that talks volumes about this is, "Getting off your buts by Sean Stephenson. If you've never hear Sean speak, you've got to. Talk about overcoming adversity. He's 45 lbs. in a wheelchair with so many physical challenges, yet he is one of the most confident people I have studied and his insight into why we do the things we do to ourselves is profound. Hope you take the time to read it.

  18. I am all things. But I choose to be these:

brilliant, beautiful, responsible, compassionate, creative, amazing, talented, understanding...

You are all things too. And what you see in me is a reflection of you. Together we grow what we choose.
