Your Perspective

Posted By: Randy GageMarch 10, 2012

When I used to have an early morning flight, I cursed the hour.  Nowadays, I’m more likely to marvel at the painted sky at sunrise.

If my flight was delayed or cancelled, I made it a point to show my disdain for their incompetence to every employee I encountered.   Now I figure they’re doing the best with what they have to work with, and try to remain cheerful and make the best of it.  And when an airline continually demonstrates it’s inability to provide acceptable service, I take my business elsewhere.

When I was at the nude beach last week (yes, your favorite blogger prefers the au naturel tanning spots), there were a few people there definitely on the north side of 300 pounds.   In the past I would have muttered something to myself about them spoiling the view.  Now I lose the judgment and am happy they’re comfortable with their own bodies.

So what changed?

My travel agent is still a sadist, most American airlines are still dreadful, and the population isn’t getting any skinnier!  (All said with a smile.  Okay, a weak smile.)

What changed is my perspective.

I’m still impatient with lousy service, and would prefer to wake up when I finish sleeping.  But getting irritated doesn’t help anything.  And I have so many issues of my own to work on, that doesn't leave enough time to be judgmental of others.

As W Mitchell who we talked about last post likes to say, it’s not what happens to you, it’s how you choose to respond to it.  When he became paralyzed and had most of his fingers burned off, he made a choice:  Instead of focusing on the 1,000 things he couldn’t do any longer, he focuses on the 9,000 things he still can do amazing.

So what about you?

What is your perspective?  How do you treat people around you when things aren’t going the way you want?  Do you curse the hour or celebrate the sunrise?   Truth is, shit happens.  To all of us.

The real secret to peace and prosperity is the perspective you choose to see the world through.

So what are you choosing today?

  1. Hi Randy, whatever is out of my control, so be it or my body will produce unhappy hormones.  However, there are so many other actitivities which can bring joy, good health, meaningful friendships, income, I can better concentrate on.  Easy to say but I am still leaning.....Thanks again.

  3. This was one of my biggest prosperity/happiness blocks. One of the most profound and life changing realizations for me was when I truly understood that when I changed the way I felt about reality/mankind/the universe, reality/mankind/the universe changed the way it felt about me. Once I truly embodied this, my entire life exploded into change - money, relationships, opportunities - they all began to shift, and I began to attract amazing things, that were a reflection of the new me, the new energy I embodied.

Something I always ask myself when dealing with a challenging situation is: How does this reaction make me feel? What energy does this thought envelop me in? Does it feel good or does it feel bad? Does being in this space serve me and attract amazing things to me?

These days, I would much rather look for the beauty in the sunrise than curse the hour - because I now I know that feeling good, and attracting all that goes along with that feeling, is a choice.

Wayne Dyer has that awesome quote: "When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change."

And watch out for the paparatzzi on that beach! Lol.

  5. You said it well, ' it’s not what happens to you, it’s how you choose to respond to it.' And we do CHOOSE, everyday!

  7. I have learnt to keep going.Whatever happened has happened and we cannot travel back in time to re-do it. So just keep going with a pragmatic mindset that it will all be well one day. And yes i appreciate the sunrise every morning and feel happy that i am alive and in a position to appreciate life no matter what. It is tough everyday but i guess that's life. When frustration boils beyond a point i do give a piece of my mind to a few around me for spoiling the day but try not to have a grudge. Thus far its been a painful yet eventful journey.

  9. As always, I may grumble to myself a bit in the mornings when I am the feeling the worse, but after I have my first cup of coffee, I do my best to keep a smile on my face.  My problems are mine and the rest of the world doesn't need to suffer because of them.

  11. Happiness is a combination of choice and circumstance (cringe). We do have need to express things like grief, anger, etc. There are circumstances no one should be happy with. There are times we need the angst and the sorrow. Otherwise, there's no real meat to our joy. It's just WHAT angers and grieves us that rats us out. And how/where we choose to express it. Happiness comes and goes, perspective is everything, isn't it? If you've never had a problem with your health or metabolism on levels that make you gain whether you eat more or less, then you may struggle with being judgemental of people whose struggle you can't begin to fathom. And that judgement is like a sad growth of spiritual cellulite. I personally need to just have those calm, not-happy, not-sad times, cycling through the layers of being human. But how instantaneous is the joy when I look to the faces I love or the beauty of the rising sun. Your encouragement is a boost, Randy. Thanks for sharing.

  13. I'm with Anne here. Perspective is the big thing!

It's not the hand you are dealt, it's what you do with it:)

  15. Hi Randy
Shifting my perspective is something I have been working on a lot lately. We have these habitual ingrained reactions to things and we just react without even thinking. Sure, some situations are certainly less pleasant than others, but we always have that choice on how to view things. I have been traveling long term and I had to recently take a trip to the border of Thailand and Myanmar to extend my stay in Thailand and I found myself getting irritated at the long trip and other things, then I thought to myself, Look at what I am doing, look at where I am -- there are a less desirable circumstances I could be in now  than having an amazing travel experience. We often try to apply labels to things as good or bad, but many experiences are just neutral and it is all about our reaction to them. I find meditating helps a lot because it opens up that space between our awareness and the fleeting thoughts and feelings that pass through, in that space, we can choose how we will proceed.
PS...I love the nude beach too!

  17. I try to find what was my fault if and I try to correct it. If it's not my fault, most times, I continue what I have to do without thinking of it thinking positive or singing a song try to focus my mind.

  19. Thanks Randy! It's all about our mindset. Not lousy service or people irritate us, that's our attitude and reactions. We let ourselves to express those reactions. It's easy to say:"Change your mindset" - hard to do. But half way to success is recognizing it.
    Cheers!

  21. Good reminders, I must say, I have mellowed as you have, and agree with you on many of these issues. When I became disabled, I looked for those things that I could still do, and what I could get back. I still do more than I probably should, because I refuse to accept what I can't do.

  23. The way we see the little hardships of everyday life makes all the difference.

Life becomes really easy when you look at it in an open, carefree, and especially happy way!

  25. That change in attitude makes such a huge difference. I've been changing that myself. Irritating things are going to happen. Daily. We may as well keep our joy and stay happy. It's so much more enjoyable! Great post. Thanks!

  33. That's what I did. When the dog was/is on a steroid type medication I let him out in the yard when I wake up on the couch 🙂 At the beginning I dreaded it and probably looked like a fool flailing about to try and herd him in. Then I realized that here we have the clearest sky most nights and there are trillions of stars in the sky. Used to be if we got home in the dark I would see them and smile but never really take the time to look at them. I decided I was going to spoil myself a little bit and when the dog was doing his stuff I would just look at the sky. Now I miss when he doesn't need to go out in the middle of the night 🙂

  35. I'm choosing to RESPOND rather than to RE-ACT what just occurred. It's very easy to slip into the reactive behavior but in the end we KNOW it doesn't serve us.. At least I know it doesn't serve me! And we are always given these tests to see how well we stay on the Path.  And of course Randy, this is directly connected to your constant reminder about doing some critical thinking and to Think About our Thoughts first. I also remind myself of another important phrase which is 'what you resist, persists'.. Thanks for posting as always!

That's what helps me every day:

THE  PRAYER  OF  THE  OPTINA  ELDERS
O Lord, give me strength to face with serenity everything that this day will bring. Grant me to entrust myself fully to Your holy will. Every hour of this day teach me and support me. Whatever news I may receive during the day, teach me to accept it with peace of mind and with firm conviction that everything is according to Your holy will. In all my words and actions guide my thoughts and feelings. In all unexpected events, do not let me forget that everything is sent by You. Teach me to deal sincerely and wisely with every member of my family, bringing confusion or sorrow to none. O Lord, give me strength to bear the weariness of the coming day and all the events of this day. Guide my will and teach me to pray, to believe, to hope, to endure, to forgive and to love. Amen.

  38. Always love the thoughts that you share with us Randy! Things can change once our perspectives change. It's all within our control. I really believe in that. I know how you felt like waking up early for flights lol I now treasure and admire the beauty of the morning skies.

  41. I think perspective has a lot to do with how we encounter the world.  However, I think our perspective probably comes from how we feel within.  I think the more we love/forgive ourselves the more loving and forgiving we are of others and their foibles, and or greater weaknesses.  Oh, I am so happy, I have always wanted to use the word foible in a sentence, and here it is!  Thank you  for this opportunity Randy. 🙂

    You're a nudist?  I don't know any nudists, I live in Missouri.

  43. I've been that person who barks at everything and everyone. But that attitude was not a successful strategy. Do not say I'm cured one hundred percent but at 90%. From being a complaining person, I see people like wonderful people. I could really make a fool of myself in the past.

  45. It does seem that people who scream and yell at every little thing get their way more often than those who do not. However, this is at the expense of their own health and lifespan..is it REALLY worth it? No. And sometimes, you really can "catch more flies with honey than vinegar." Love your blog Randy! You aren't afraid to be YOU! You inspire me!

  55. I always  celebrate the sunrise! even when I don't have to, I often rise early.  As Paul Harvey use to say, "sunrise was the most beautiful explosion known to us".

I seldom jump people for bad service. I know its not the gate attendants fault that the plane is late.  If I get mad I aim my ire to management, not "front line" people.   I also make a point of say please/thankyou's and "attaboys" for out-standing service

As for shit happens, I believe it, but I also believe that if it happens to me, I won't  "accept" it easily.

  57. When things aren't going my way, the way I want 'em to go, my response is not usually anger/irritation or judgements-of-others; rather, my response is usually FEAR.  (Maybe fear underlies the A/I or J?)  At any rate, I oft times find myself spiralling down into "oh no, what if....?"
This post reminds me - it's JUST a perspective.  Maybe there could be a different way of looking at circumstances? Eg.,  "Maybe they don't mean "...something scary-awful may happen....    Maybe it just means ______ (something neutral or even - gasp! - positive.)  It's all a matter of perspective.

Incidentally.....My heart aches for those who suffer from the obesity epidemic.  Comfortable in their skin?  Surely not physically....   Thank you God for derailing me from that track!

  60. I went to a new megastore yesterday to buy 3 things, and in all 3 departments the service was so poor I left emptyhanded. I went to a smaller store of the same chain and the service was excellent, but after discussion we determined the ideal models for me were only available online or ... at the bigger store I had just left.

Did I go back to the bigger store? Not a chance. Did I go home and order online? Nope. The smaller store is ordering the stuff for me and I'll go back in a week so the helpful guy can have the sale on his sheet.

Have I always been this patient? No way! But it feels right.

  62. btw, @businesses, the guy at the smaller store told me they'd had quite a few people come in complaining about the service at the bigger one. One lady the day before came in for a spindle of blank CDs o sometuch and ended up buying a big TV and accessories. The big store, which vacuumed up a bunch of people off unemployment and gave them basic training only (probably in exchange for a grant) missed a £2,500 sale.

  68. 100% agree with you Randy. We must stay positive. But the most tough think here (at the beginning) is to REMEMBER staying on the positive side. I know it because started changing my character not long ago.

I'll give you an example of my own. I still remember how it felt when my girlfriend broke up with me and left my country for the USA. It hurt. But now I remember only good thinks from that relationship and I'm grateful for all the good we had. There is no point to focus on negative things when there are a lot of positive ones (and of course we'll attract more positive things this way)

  70. I am working on a large site with 2,000 people and could get upset over little thingsthroughout the day. That's what I had done, or had let me plug in from my colleagues.Recently, I've changed mentally, however, and go there every day with the idea thatanything goes. Some things work, however, and I'm pleasantly surprised and delightedme. So in conclusion, I feel much more comfortable than before

  74. Interesting.
Interesting that so many "born healthy" people think alike, complain about this and that, ask for improvement, turn away from what is not "nice" to them. It must be common. No judgement - just a statement from what I discovered in my life. And no, I was never on that planet earth. I accepted others who were different - the same way I accepted myself. I was judged by others that I am too social or that I do care too much about all (I wasn´t grouping).
I figured that certain circumstances in life bring many people real close to my old world, or even over to my side - so they get to where I started from - and suddenly see the same as I do (for all of my life).
    They get a different perspective.
It does calm many people down.
    "Welcome!"

  76. So what am I choosing today? Well, like everyday I'm choosing to see the good of course. I'm very lucky in that I'm  naturally a celebrate the sunrise kinda cat; it's my default.

Now, over the last 4 years or so I've faced challenges l've never had to deal with before (all self imposed challenges of course) and I've found them to be [as expected the whole time] of tremendous value for me.

Exercises to help me strengthen my "celebrate the sunrise" muscles.

I love being in control. Living with a "curse" or a "celebration" either one is mine to choose. I see no reason to choose the curse.

  78. My experience has been the same.  As time goes by you begin to soften the rage and let it go.  Truth is, people definitely respond more favorably to kindness in difficult situations rather than outrageous behavior.  Not to say that there aren't still times that I go off (all of the them warranted I might add ;-)).  Guess it just depends.

  80. Glad you've shifted from cursing the early morning flight to loving the early morning light!

Having worked on the other side of the retail counter once or twice in my life, and seeing the abuse waiters and waitresses encounter from others, I make it a policy (unless horribly provoked) to treat all service people with extra kindness and friendliness.

No reflection on your past , Randy, but I try to make up for all the mean people out there, the ones who treat service people rudely just for the pure hell of it.

    G'day, mate!

  84. I may not have wealthy parents, or a even a college education, like alone a pedigreed degree or family name. My ability to connect with others outweighs what many would consider to be weaknesses that would spell a lifetime of suffering and barely getting by.In today's world, there are plenty of highly educated people who are poor or barely getting buy. How you use your mind if far more important than what the experts say.

  86. Great points Randy. I would like to say that I am happy, cheerful and accepting 100% of the time but this is not true. It's more like 90% of the time and I am getting better.

Great comment Joel. Having spent a fair bit of time with Alan over a number of years, I will defer to his observation. Similar to the comment some will come out with where they say you need to be solving the right problem. Working really hard on the wrong problem is such a waste.

  95. Randy for years I went around feeling less than. Kinda like I didn't get the memo. Everyone around me was so upset about everything and complaining and whenever I would let something slide off my back I, stop to smell the roses or have something positive to say, I was ridiculed as weak, gay or somehow, less than normal.

Over the past 20 years (I am 53) I have slowly changed my perspectives. Because of people like Harv Eker, Les Brown and yourself; I have been able to shift my relative view of things.

Number one lesson learned was about the people I hung around. I now avoid those that would belittle me for being me.

This article like so many allows me to realize I was OK and am OK and that is OK. I am hoping it is also a catalyst in others lives to help them start to make the small shifts that will help them toward more meaningful and authentic lives.

    Thanks

    39. Thanks Randy! Greate post!

Amen.

Must thank you Randy for you revealed Prosperity for me.

    49. It is difficult to restrain their emotions and not get annoyed when failing or disappointing ... all around you is sharply circumscribed and challenging! for me - it's the drivers who do not use the rules of the road and go as they please! I'm starting to smile and sing!

    51. this is something my dad always tried to teach me. he would always say that there's only one thing that i can truly control and that is how i react to the things happening around me. once i realized that, my whole attitude changed and i was much happier overall.

    66. I love the sunrise, it doesn't show up much here in Seattle, but when it does I love to just sit outside and feel its warmth. You are right shit does happen, but I rather smell the roses instead! There is so much more to be thankful and grateful for! Thanks for another great post Randy!

    68. 100% agree with you Randy.

My ability to connect with others outweighs what many would consider to be weaknesses that would spell a lifetime of suffering and barely getting by.In today's world, there are plenty of highly educated people who are poor or barely getting buy. How you use your mind if far more important than what the experts say.
