Your Own Lane

Posted By: Randy GageApril 3, 2013

Biggest mistake I see people make toward success is worrying what others are doing.   It’s not about comparing yourself to competitors.  It’s about being the very best you can be yourself.

Swim in your own lane.  Don’t look left, don’t look right.  Don’t worry about a collision.  The only thing you’re going to hit is your destiny!

  1. So true. Easy and simple. most ppl forget it tho.
Thank you Randy for your great work. Are you coming to Germany sometime this year? 😉

  2. I need to keep reminding myself this. I do have fear of marketing myself in way because my competitors success. Will continue to remove the self doubt with no fear of rejection. Really just like Ive always done, why would I not continue to swim in my own lane to my destiny.

  3. I always tell our customers (who love to complain to me about our competition) that there is enough stuff in the world for everyone to succeed and that my job is to focus only on OUR business and no one else's. I think this one principle is why we ended up doing things differently from everyone else and now have the best reputation in town.
Also, it's a lot more fun to be creative and continue to improve then to spend energy worrying about what others are doing.

  4. This is SO true.. and I love that you posted this.. It goes along with the other statements you've made for a long time now.. We are ALL unique and therefore there IS NO comparing to do!..

  5. Hi RG,
Comparing is a curse. I guard against it because I know all comparison results in inferiority, mediocrity or superiority. Be you. Look forward. Be you each moment of each day. Comparing only dissipates your precious power because the Universe placed you here to be you, to use the special functions you have been blessed with, in your form.
Stop comparing. Start creating. Never look back. Take this approach daily. Each time you move toward a competitive plane bookmark this post all, and listen to RG. He knows. Stay in your lane, look forward and live YOUR dreams.
Thanks RG. Enjoy your day wherever in the world you are now, you world traveler you.

  6. That is so true but so hard to do. Everyting that can be measured is measured by comparison. More than, less than, bigger than, smaller than.
Perhaps I need to stop using comparison to others as a motivator and use the desire to overcome my obstacles as a motivator. Easier said than done. I do like a bigger boat, just like the one that passed me a minute ago ... :))

  7. Love the lane analogy. I just posted parallel idea about the need to boldly reveal our personalities in our business.

  8. It's far too easy to "keep up with the Joneses".
Don't even get me started on the people who think there is only one "right" way to live, and life is something to be deferred until "retirement".
To me, the R word is a dirty word.
It's something invented to keep people dumb, sick, and broke.
    A carrot on a stick.

  9. Some people who "have it all" are either broke since they're living on credit or chained to a business/career they don't even love- the so-called "golden handcuffs" they are afraid to live because of the status and money they receive.
They don't have time for their family or friends.
How is it good for you if you have to kill yourself and sacrifice everything to get that big house, expensive car, and validation from others?

  10. To me, that's a different side of the slave to your circumstances coin.
Both status chasers and poor people are too sides of the same coin.
Not to mention the many middle class people who have their own issues.

  11. ThomasMrak Is it me or your writings are in the line of, what NOT to do/say/think?
I struggle to find one statement I could possibly agree with.
