Your Next Comfort Zone

Posted By: Randy GageMarch 9, 2009

It’s a funny thing.  When I’m on the last leg of a long trip, nothing screams comfort to me like pulling up at home.  My place has a comfortable reassurance that provides me with peace and harmony.

Yet when I’m in a foreign land where I don’t speak the language and don’t know all that well, just seeing a American Airlines jet or a Starwood hotel can bring me comfort.  There is a certain familiarity, and a connection to home.

Now if I need to get somewhere closer, I would much rather drive than face the hassles of traveling with American.  But if I am in Ukraine and heading home, that AA jet is a sign of reassurance.  The same jet has different connotations in different environments.

We all have restaurants that make us comfortable, comfort foods, even certain seats in the movie theatre.  Of course many of these things are inanimate objects.  The comfort we draw from them is the comfort we create in our mind.

If you asked me what separate the high level achievers from the average person I would say this:  The achievers have fear of getting out of our comfort zones too.  But we do it anyway, knowing that embracing fear creates new confidence.  And then we create a new comfort zone at the higher level.  Then we leave it again.

So how are you doing on that?

  1. Well, I am not doing as well as I will like, I like my confort zone, my house, my chocolate cookies, sit in from of the computer and spend hours etc.. , but I try to get out of it, not enough to make me happy, it is really hard and I have to struggle to get out. I know that I have to do it if I want to have a better life but that is something that I have to work on. I start the week doing good but by the end of the week I go back to the way I was.
Sometimes I dont sleep because I know I didnt do enough, but I am still positive and I know that me trying all the time, one day I will be able to leave my confort zone without making it a big deal.

Thank you Randy for these blog, talking to you make me aware of the things I have to work on to be better every day.

  2. I am inspired by your leadership from day one.
Yair instructed us long ago to get out of the comfort zone and I do so. your example here is grate. thanks a lot.

  3. I think like most people, I struggle with this.. I WANT to leave my comfort zone but resist. And as we all know, "what you resist, persists". However, I have always been a risk taker though I ask for guidance to identify the risks that have the greatest prosperity potential..

I appreciate you pointing this out to us though. We all need to risk more and think less. As for myself, I'm confident that what holds me back are my beliefs and after years of toting them arouind, it's challenging to dispense with them..

  4. I'm sitting here laughing at the fact (acknowledging) that commenting on your blog is outside my comfort zone - at least one of them! Yet, I'm blogging, twittering, and facebooking...those equally presented a daunting task with me continually wondering if I was doing it right - net-ticately correct, etc. Those sensations passed as the number of friends and followers from all over the world continue to climb. Each time the fear diminishes - ah, passes completely and I feel like a Pro and not s Schmo!

  5. Thankfully, I have people like you and a few good friends who constantly kick me in the behind as a reminder to keep getting out of my comfort zones. What's funny, my friends don't even realize the're doing it. L.O.L.

Anyway, thanks for the insight. You always seem to know what we all need when we need it most.

    Thanks my friend,

  6. I've learned to get comfortable
    being uncomfortable.

It's only then that I notice growth,
    change or anything new happening!

I believe life is meant to be lived and certainly
    not on auto pilot!

And when the day is over
There is no place like Home.. 😉

    Peace,
    JoAnn

  7. I've been thinking and this phenomenon goes further... For those who are commited to break the limits of our confort zone, we must be alert to see what happens once we expand our confort zone a little bit further...

Expanding is a non-stop task... because in the process is where true personal growth takes place... It's not enough that currently you're not afraid of dancing... If you're commited to your growth you must now see if there's some type of dance you feel akward... Now you have your next station stop in your journey...

Thank you Mr Gage, some times your post arrives in the perfect moment (I'm not american but I like feel there people who has the same vision on certain things and, most important, who shares it and teach it...)

  8. Habits create comfort zones, comfort zones are held in our minds for they are related to our past experiences. Let´s drop our habits and live in the present, only the magic of thre present keeps us from suffering from what we think we are lacking.

what are you doing to live in the real present?

  9. I am learning how to add value to my content so that when someone comes to my blog http://www.angelabrook.com they information and are not slammed with sales and buy here content - striving to become a renegade coach with a powerful team - I will do what it takes to move forward - I bite my lip and move out of my comfort zone

  10. I'm the kind of person that brings her pillow everywhere I go. I'm the last to try out the new restaurant in our city, and when I mean the last, it can be 8 to 10 years after it opened. I feel very unconfortable when I go to my favorite coffee shop and notice that someone is sitting in MY spot, I rarely stay.
So I would say that I am guilty as charged. BUT, I like doing different thing, go to different events. But it has to come from my part not challenged from somebody else.

  11. Thanks for the nudge Randy. After months of busy-ness I thought I'd suddenly lost my mojo, you've highlighted for me that I've fallen into a comfort trap again. Whilst I understand the need to take time out and recharge regularly, I am now very aware of when that starts to become a habit again. Time to focus.
    Thanks for the heads up!
    Abundant Blessings y'all.

  12. I think the statement - The achievers have fear of getting out of our comfort zones too - is the most impactful, accurate and important concept in this excellent article. Fear is the biggest "disease" out there. That is why we have all these bailouts and other handout programs. The bold American spirit has been (temporarily) shut down.

Like the phoenix, this too shall rise. Always does.

  13. We all have tasted the moment that we want to leave our comfort zones. That’s the moment when our fears, judgments and our believes make obstacles for our excelling. It may seem difficult to leave it, but after a while it will become our regular habit. on that time we could experience happiness, joy and adventure.

  14. Yes, it is very exciting to leave the comfort zone and create a new one at a higher level. But I love it. And then I rest a little bit in the new comfort zone. But after a few week it is boring there again and I need a new adventure. So the game will never end.

I am happy because I am looking forward to meet you, Randy, in Budapest next week!

  15. Everyone should have a mentor,a coach.
Every single successful person person has a mentor, a coach, masterminds with successful people.
Takes more than reading about other people's success(to recognize and change old beliefs)not only that but this is not general stuff it is very individual-we have to recognize exactly what causes us to do what we do before we can change it.
We all do what we do for different reasons.
Reading this blog will challenge you to refocus but one might consider getting into Randy's Coaching Programs(If he has one), go to his Seminars, surround yourself with successful people and mastermind with them. Reading the Blog is first step. Take the next one.
As Randy said in one of his U-tube videos - "Let's be Real kids sitting at home and watching THE SECRET 11 times is not going to make you successful". Can't be more straight forward than this.
Let's take the next step everybody.
    Have a phenomenal day.

  16. Perhaps, some are not moving out of their "comfort zone" because they haven't created it yet. This was a situation I had for several years after having the craziness while raising four children and the build-up of chaos that happens. Once I created a home of comfort and joy, I was able to take control of my environment, thoughts and actions, and in turn, was able to focus forward to; "what do I want to learn next?".

  17. After leaving the confort zone, fear comes. Depending on how far I go, so does the intensity. I've learnt over the years that the critical part of the path is to sustain the fear and keep moving. Like you said before, with fear I have the chance to root deeper the courage to move. Then new doors will open, opportunities will show and higher and deeper knowledge will be gained.
    Going through the fears.

    Thanks Randy.

  18. I love my comfort zone, but for some reason which I havent quite figured, when I am out of it and travelling near and far, particularly to foreign countries, become really energised and re-charged. Its like i am creating more zones of comfort wherever I am.....
I do however get longings for comforts of the past, things I remember loving when I was a child....

    bye for now Randy

  19. I think it's more that people are unaware they have become used to their discomfort and think it's their comfort zone. Once they get out of their discomfort zone they will realize what being comfortable really means.

And by the way, "The Secret" doesn't work in itself for most people until they have changed their mind pattern.
