Your Extravagance Account

Posted By: Randy GageMay 24, 2012

We’ve talked about saving and investing, and managing your money.  Let’s look at another intriguing aspect of prosperity…

The Extravagance Account.

This is a new account you create, separate from your retirement, investment or savings account.  This is an account you start and build for one simple purpose: to enjoy something extravagant!

The only rule is it can’t be a necessity.  It has to be something extravagant.   Oh and one more rule…

You have to add to this account every week.  Even if it’s only a dollar, you have to make some progress toward attaining it.

Make the extravagance relative to where you’re at now on the success journey.  You want something that stretches you, but is attainable enough that you can sell it to your conscious mind.

So for some of you this might be a spa weekend or hotel getaway where you live.  For others it might be a cruise around the world, a Shelby Mustang, or a shopping weekend in Milan.  But you want something fun and compelling that will pull you towards it.

Why I’m suggesting this is it does several things for you.  First and foremost, it gets you dreaming again.  It increases the size of the prosperity window through which you see the world.  And it gives your subconscious mind something to move toward, which will cause it to cause you to perform daily actions forward.

So are you up for it?  If so, please declare it below, and if you don't mind, share what your extravagance account is for.

  3. We are in the process of "downsizing"in order to put our priorities in place ..from another vantage point it looks like upsizing because it makes room for an extravagence account.
Thanks for helping me reframe those thoughts!

  5. Great timing Randy. I just started my account 2 days ago. I did not call it an Extravagance account. I called it my Beach money account. I like your name better. I live in Extravagance.

  7. I will start an account to take my parents and family to Hawaii.  I have already identified a nice Villa with Chef service and other nice perks.  thanks Randy this is better than a vacation account, we can go on a cruise for vacation.

  9. My extravagance account is going to be a ten day vacation, staying in beach huts in the Seychelles, with my wonderful girlfriend.  Thank you for helping me to allow the inspiration, Randy!

  11. Love the vibe of  the word "extravagence".  I can be extravagent, financially or personally - what fun!  I want to be able to spend my (initial) extravagence account real soon,    Can I add to the account every week, and spend it every month??
Currently, I've got the habit of "putting off" buying things I'd like - and then guess what?  the money I've been saving for "an extravagence" gets pre-empted for other-people's-needs (That's the story of my financial life: I hoard, they spend. Aaaaaaarrrrgggghhhhhh!  Wish I could find the magic key to unlock that one.  Maybe the Extravagence Account will help?)
Let me re-word that:  The story of my financial life WAS: I hoarded, they spent.  That's how it was up until last month.  It's in the past.  It's in the past.  The new story is:  Once in a while, I buy something extravagent for myself.  It is safe for me to do so.  Thanks, Randy.

  13. oooohhh....I like it. 🙂 I call my savings my "Financial Independence Account" and the money I pay off student loans with my "Debt Clearance Account."  These things I learned from Bob Proctor way back when. I diligently and joyfully TITHE due to lessons from YOU Randy...so NOW I get to add another amazing account that supports my abundance. Extravagance! Love love love it!  My first extravagance will be treat myself and my loved ones to an Oktoberfest-adjacent trip to Germany -  a foursome with my son & his girlfriend. We've always wanted to go. We've never been. It's almost time. 🙂

  15. Oooh.. I like it.. I think my account will go towards a luxury vacation on the Buick Riviera! LOL  (Sorry, but humor is incredibly important in life, even when contemplating extravagance).

Actually it's about having a beautiful home on San Francisco Bay here in Marin county.. A place that relaxes, provides the space and essentials of living my Luxury Dream. The Baltic 50 sailboat tied up to the deep water dock outside and the 2013 Porsche Carrera S cabriolet and Range Rover Evoque parked in the garage. And most importantly, being able to shower my beautiful partner with the luxuries the Universe has available to all of us.. Too extravagant Randy?

  17. What a great point you´re writing about today in your BLOG-post!
I can imagine that once adding permanently every week some bucks or even a lot more, I´d take over that process to the other accounts. THIS IS ON MY TO DO list.
    What for?
    >> My favourite small Reverse Jäger-LeCoultre watch.

      1.  @Leeloo  @1000Changes The way I want to see the world is to find a way to go on tour.Probably a silly proposition, especially at my age (30), but I dare say finding out how the heck to make it happen would be better than sitting around and reading about it or watching TV.

  19. I have one but it's not for anything specific.  More for upgrading to first class when we fly, or for taking a vacation on the spur of the moment... things like that!  🙂

  21. I have set up one savings account but for some reason I've never saved anything. After reading this post, I know exactly what my extravagance is for: I'll buy be a 1st class ticket from Vorarlberg Austria to South Beach Florida, knock on your door and thank you personaly for every single lesson I've learned from you Randy! You're AWESOME 😉

  23. I'd like to build a proper studio, and the beauty of it is, I could I also turn it into a workspace for myself, use the some of the tax incentives which businesses get by opening it up to others. Even build a different kind of media company- that the creators it distributes have a part of- focused on the craft, while still delivering value, rather than the nickel and diming machine some of the entertainment industry has become. The way United Artists was- (Founded by many actors who each had a stake, including Charlie Chaplin. While you can do a lot on a computer, nothing can duplicate a $1 million+ mixing/recording console, high end microphones, stellar effects processors, great acoustics and a fun work environment.

  25. My Extravagance Account is currently building funds for an East Coast road trip I've been dreaming about for years and hope to take this summer. Ontario to PEI... just to eat a fresh lobster!

  27. Love it. Already set this up and it has inital funding. I call it my wealthy lifestyle account, but I think I like your name better...extravagance!
Initially for a trip and some home improvement projects, but working towards bigger purchases.... Maserati and estate home (already got the home picked out).

  34. Great question! The two extravagances that I would love to put money away for are nicer cars and more travel. I'd love to see different parts of the world at least 2-3 times of the year and travel in style without stressing over spending. And I'd love to add a new car to the garage every now and then and have no issue with changing one when I get over the excitement. There's my two!

  36. I love this! 🙂 Ok, my extravagance account for my next immediate desired items would be to put aside money every month to...1. Buy a gorgeous floor-to-ceiling painting for this blank wall in my home
    2. Buy another 20 pairs of shoes during my next trip to the USA in September 2012I'll come back and post more when that's done, but right now - that would keep me smiling & shining 😉
    XOXO

  38. Hey Randy,  I'm taking to heart this line:  You wrote, "You want something that stretches you, but is attainable enough that you can sell it to your conscious mind"
"...Selling it to my conscious mind" is a REALLY IMPORTANT aspect of this Extravagance Account.  Perhaps you will expand on this in the near future?    I'd love to say, "My extravagance account is to buy a 1956 Porsche Speedster"   but my little voice is shouting, "Yeah, right toots!"    My C. mind is a hard sell! and as for my subc. mind.....well!

So my Extravagance Account will be to buy something frivolous, something fun, something just outside my spending-on-me comfort zone....and doing so pdq!  Then I'll be saving to another extravagance next month.  Maybe that will st-r-e-t-c-h my comfort zone?  We'll see.

Repost this next month (or next year) and we'll see what progress has been made.

  42. Love the idea's of an extravagance account and increasing the size of my prosperity window. I think we can get too narrow in our focus of saving for retirement only. The more money we have the more fun and exciting opportunities we can create. That's what life is about!

  45. I think some of you miss the point. Extravagance would be a specific item that you would never really spend the money on but now will with this account. Mine is to buy a hand-made, italian silk suit for $1,000. Double-breasted, solid color (not striped), by the best tailor between Buffalo & Toronto.

Then I'll start on my 2nd extravagant item.

  47. My extravagant account is from all my rewards points from my credit card each month.  I have decided to use this extra money here to simply satisfy me with a new guitar, vacation, surfboard, etc...and yes I do pay my credit card off.  I personally would only go into debt to buy a house or my dream car, which I have done before.

  49. I want to save 15,000$ in my extravagance account so that I can go on vacation with my parents to Israel. My parents are staunch catholics and would love a surprise vacation to the holy cities such as Rome and Jerusalem

  51. I like this idea.  I was going to say a trip to Greece, but that seems too distant - so instead, I say one of my bucket list items ... a skydive (tandem jump), opting for the additional upgrade of videotaping it so I can laugh later.  : )

  55. Finally - an inspiration re what my (first) extravagance saving will buy: I want it to be something I can buy pretty soon (good ol' instant-ish gratification) and something that will help me really get into the feeeeeling of being wealthy.
My first extravagance will be something I've NEVER bought for myself ever before:  Single Malt Scotch.

In my youth, I worked in high end restaurants, so I know that Single Malt is something that really wealthy, prosperous people enjoy.  Scotch is my preferred tipple - not that I drink a lot, but  I am going to LOVE LOVE LOVE feeling WEALTHY when I sit down for that end-o-day revitalizing beverage with honoured husband, and mine is: Single Malt with a splash of soda.   Aaaahhhhhh......
