You Are the Marketer

Posted By: Randy GageDecember 10, 2012

There’s a familiar pattern I see with entrepreneurs.  They want to be busy on running the business, but they don’t spend enough focus on growing it.

Speakers tell me they just want someone to market them so they can just show up to speak.  Authors just want to write books and hope the publisher will sell them.   Salespeople are afraid to ask for the order.  CEOs want to work on executive stuff.

Guess what?

If you’re a speaker, author or consultant, there is no one who can market you better than you.  (Speaking of which, have you bought Risky Is the New Safe yet?)  Even if you’re the president or CEO of a large venture, you have to be promoting the business.  Everybody has to be involved in sales and marketing.  Everybody has to hustle.

Notice how all the sharks from Shark Tank promote every episode on their social media accounts?   Did you see how many media appearances Daniel Craig made for Skyfall?  Who sold more Apple products than Steve Jobs?

The number one comment I hear from people is, “I don’t want to be too salesy.”  Remember this:

Salesy is always better than brokey.

  1. Salesy is better than brokey.  Nice.  It kinda sounds like the smurfs. Salesy Smurf and Brokey Smurf.  I am sure most people would prefer to be the former rather than the latter.

  3. Hm, being an entrepreneur means to be multi-skilled/-talented and that means for all of us: being ready to pick up new skills which aren´t listed under (y)our talents. It means additional work! It means moving on and not in circles. It means permanent change.
One needs renewable energy to keep going!
    And that´s a challenge!

  5. I'm gonna have to open up and add one more thing to my gratitude list for today. This post! I really needed to hear this. I just got off the phone with a friend and I basically said to her that "I don’t want to be too salesy" (though in different words). But you're right of course, salesy IS better than brokey! Thanks for the motivation, Randy! And for the record, I did buy your book. I know you need the money 🙂
