Working with a Coach

Posted By: Randy GageMay 31, 2018

It happened again…

A fellow author called for my advice.  And every time I was giving him a suggestion, he interrupted me to explain why he was doing a different approach.

After five times of this, I finally stopped and told him that if he was going to ask me for advice, and I was kind enough to provide it – either he should stop interrupting me and actually listen – or just admit that he wanted me to pander to his confirmation bias.

This happens often when softball teams ask me to coach them or conduct a clinic.  I will demonstrate to a player how positioning their feet different, or changing their swing path to the ball will help them hit better.  Then they explain to me why they are hitting their current way.

It’s takes an astute person to receive feedback without getting defensive.  Doesn’t mean the feedback is always good.  But if you don’t actually listen to it and use your discernment and critical thinking, you’ll never know.

If you want success, prosperity, and to improve in any way – look for guides, mentors or coaches who can help you.  Then really listen and evaluate what they tell you.  Or stop wasting everyone’s time.

How you doing on this?

  1. Amen! As my friend Darren says be a Sponge. We don't know what we don't know. Your advice may not work for me but if I ask for it you better believe I am going to shut up and listen to you!

  2. If you think you have difficulty trying to get people to change their line of thinking (or to even consider it) when it comes to business, try getting them to change their thought process regarding their diet. Although I can show them scientific, evidence-based proof that a proper diet along with exercise can mitigate the 15 leading causes of death in the United States, it is an almost impossible struggle. People have been inundated with so much false, bullshit from the medical community, pharmaceutical companies, large food manufacturers, supplement companies, dairy and animal producers, Internet diet gurus, their friends and family, etc., that it is next to impossible to get them to stop eating the standard American diet (which is the acronym SAD - definitely apropos). Certain institutions and individuals have been making an exorbitant amount of money selling their snake oil. They will do anything to continue the status quo which includes pushing false and conflicting information to the public. They will stop at nothing to protect their goose that lays the golden eggs for them.
