Work and Your Assignment in Life

Posted By: Randy GageMay 17, 2010

Last post I told you that the Universe wouldn't give you your next assignment until you are overqualified for this one.

So where are you in all that?

I believe your work is as important to you as your family and your relationships.  Now I don't mean to say that you should miss the delivery of your first child because there was a staff meeting that day.  Nor do I mean that the work you do at the office next Tuesday is as important as that father/daughter talk you need to have about drugs, dating and honesty.

But I think what you do is VERY important to who you are as a human.  And the roles you play as a parent or a partner are greatly influenced by the work you do, and how you do it.

Show me a guy who hates his job, and I'll show you a guy with a rocky marriage.  Show me a woman who holds herself back for fear of upstaging her husband, and I will show you a mother who is setting a horrible role model for her children.

People who tackle their work with joy, abandon and adventure will approach their marriage and family life the same way.  I think everyone should work.  Not because you need the money (although that's not a bad reason), but because your work allows you to develop, contribute and grow as a human being. Your work gives you clues about your assignment.

Because your assignment is not really a decision you reach, but a discovery you make.  As you may know, I retired at 40 years old.  My goal was to live a life of leisure, racing cars, playing softball, and drinking out of a coconut.  That lasted for nine months.

So what happened?

Tune in tomorrow to find out.  Until then, please share your thoughts on work, life and your assignment.

  1. I admire your mission in life! You've inspire me...

What it comes down to is this: It's an inside job! It's people like Randy who challenge those to think and get the wheels turning...

  2. Now as I rebuild my life, I am doing the work that I enjoy. Even though the horizon looks bright, I am not back to drinking out of coconuts yet. Great post Randy.

  3. All the success in the world won't matter much if your personal life is not in some kind of order. We had a tremendous speaker come out this weekend who I love and admire but over breakfast it saddened me to hear how he had no peace personally.

If we want to retire young, live life to the full and inspire others, we have to work in conjunction with all areas in our life to have success - not just a life of leisure. We either pay up now or pay up later but we all end up paying our dues sometime in the areas of relationships and family.

  4. Yes I think we all have a mission in life and that mission includes other people and a way of living - a working life - its difficult to imaging how to grow as a human being without manifesting the personal mission by working - working is important for man

  5. Starting my own business has given me meaning and purpose - and looking forward to make money and being able to invest more in my business... and eventually focus on doing life - doing my assignment in life. But, I suppose - I do life at the same time as I build my business - otherwise I couldnt see myself doing neither my business, nor my day-to-day job. Yes, I do believe I just had a bit of a revelation.... it´s true I love both my current job - and my new business, and I think it would be hard doing any of them without passion, joy - or love

  6. This is great perspective!

I do believe that in order to grow and be most fulfilled in a job, you need to be doing something that you are passionate about and are emotionally vested in.

I agree with you that disdain in your career can definitely translate into a lousy home life, both as a partner and/or a parent. Life is meant to be abundant and lived from the heart...in ALL areas!

    Looking forward to tomorrow's post.

  7. Adding to my quote file..

Your assignment is not really a decision you reach, but a discovery you make. - Randy Gage

Once upon a time I was very very good at what I did. My peers, superiors and I all agreed I was the best and there was data to prove it. Being good, even great at something does not make it fun or enjoyable. I quit. I haven't had a job since.

  8. I work as a Controller for a group of Radio Stations and I love my job.

The problem is that I have to show up every day. 🙂

So now I am thinking where I want to be 10 years from now, and the answer is simple, sitting on the Great Wall of China with my laptop, or whatever communication device is current, and flashing off some video to my business team.

  9. I can relate to retiring for only 9 months. I spent 7 months travelling last year and I couldn't wait to get home and get back to work. I much as I love travelling, I was bored! My hunger for a new, exciting and challenging position materialised before I even touched down. I had the interview booked half-way home. Going overseas was one way that I decided that I could put an end to my uninspiring and dead-end job. It forced me to look for my newest position and when I was fresh, ready and eager to do so. I'm so glad I did!

  10. Don't get me wrong, I love working- love what I do. The only issue that I have is finding balance, between working and being a wife and mother of three- both are fulfilling, but crazy. I once read a quote in Julie Cohen's latest book "Your Work, Your Life…Your Way:"
Work-life balance is a journey – some days you’ll move closer towards it, other days you’ll be far away from it. You need to be aware of what gets in your way so you can always be moving in the right direction.

I am getting better at finding the right direction.

  11. Hi! I also find work important. We are supposed to be together...You got to find a place where you belong and feel at home to create value in life. I also agree work IS important, though I know how it is not to have one.Human beings have to be creative to stay healthy.Don´t forget your artistical talents, and handicraft, cooking whatever.MUSIC!At least one live music performance a month...work on your soul, not on your body. If you work on your soul, your body will become beautiful too.And healthy. And happy. Thanks Randy for giving so much!

  12. I enjoyed reading this post, Randy. Yes, I do believe what we do as well as how we do our work are very important to who we are because it represents what is in us. Although there are times in our lives while going through one stage of life to another, being in the many transitions, we sometimes end up being sort of indifferent or weary or unfocused at times, simply because we are imperfect unfinished human beings. However, once we grip the fact of our lives, after having gone through enough of what we had gone through which would help bring us to where we finally arrive, with our mind focused and wise enough to move on upward in life, I believe we can no longer be half-hearted and unfocused, but of course depending on where we are at in life, and how much we allow ourselves to make changes or how much we can let go or hold on to things, and I also think how lucky we may be to be around true good friends who are honest enough to tell us the truth about ourselves to help change our views of looking at things for the better. Only true good friends would do that. With all these elements, our ways of viewing things change. As you mentioned, I agree roles we play in our life settings (loved ones and family situations) are very influenced by how we do the work and how much we enjoy .. and perhaps how much we take it seriously - whether half-hearted or whole-heartedly. And when we are full of joy, knowing what our callings are which would make us absolutely happy being ourselves, not taking anybody else' roles because that' what we were meant to be before we were even born or before the foundation of the universe.. because it is God/Universe given role (although we may have to go through some stages to eventuallyy find what our true assignments are), the level of our contentment/and life-learned maturity reveals in our attitude/behavior in the relationships with our loved ones (a husband, wife, or partner). I believe our highest goals/priorities in life to grow as a human being, or discover what/who we are meant to be which as a result would make our true self be absolutely happy and content and thus our state of contentment would affect the way we deal with our loved ones as well as others, and that we would treat them in the way we would want them to see us or treat us. In other words, when we truly respect and love ourselves, we naturally do the same - love and respect others effortlessly in our subconscious minds.

[I think everyone should work. Not because you need the money..]
Yes, I agree, Randy. Just as you experienced when you tried to retire at 40, wishing to live a life of leisure and drinking out of a coconut, you got bored and that lifestyle only lasted 9 months. I believe we are created such a way that we are so hungry and see the needs to keep on moving and growing. When we stop doing this, that is when we begin to die mentally and spiritually... because I believe that's how God created us. We were born to be constantly growing and changing. However, knowing what we are meant to do in each stage of our lives is another issue, I think... It takes time to find out about it through seeking , knocking and praying.

Randy, how could you possibly be so capable of endlessly motivating us, helping us think so deeply about different issues of our lives and move us forward. Thank you, thank you. Truly. You're absolutely wonderful in every way as you help us approach on different subjects. You are a great mentor, trainer, and spritual leader, and I respect you and like you very much. Nite, Randy. A hug from me. -saachi PS I was almost going to write a word of apology for this lengthy comment again, but having given an okay from you previously, I now obey not to apologize. lol

  13. I've been a stay at home mum for 7 years now and despite not having to work, I crave the opportunity of finding that balance where going to work is enjoyable and not going to work is enjoyable too.

I hear talk about what people would do if they could retire from working (if they had money). I am always thinking of ways I would use that money to make work fun and all the wonderful projects I could establish to bring joy for so many people.

If anyone is looking for an employee (part time of course) in Sydney with one hell of a great radio voice, contact my agent, Randy.

  14. I heard about you from Joe Vitale - one of my all time favorite marketers. He mentioned that you have been one of his favorites for a while, so I had to see what you are up to. It looks great 🙂

My personal life is doing really good, and since I had a coach train me retrain my thoughts about who I am in business, that too has rocketed through the sky.

    Keep doing what you love.
