Who Wants to Be a Billionaire - Part Two

Posted By: Randy GageNovember 1, 2012

In honor of Risky Is the New Safe launching this week, we’re doing a series of posts on some of the multi-million- and multi-billion-dollar ideas either that we explore in the book, or will become apparent as you do some critical thinking and extrapolate forward from other projections in the book.

So welcome to…Who Wants to Be a Billionaire!  Part Two…

As we do the series each day, feel free to answer the questions posed with your ideas on the answers.  Or keep your answers secret as you plot to how you will quickly bring something to market and become the next most-talked-about episode on Shark Tank!

Also, let me know when you think we’re asking the wrong questions, and suggest any other questions you believe will lead people to new and other multi-million- and multi-billion-dollar ideas!

So having said all that, here are some questions to ponder today….

Social media blows up branding forever.  It has dramatically changed the way customers find you, vet you, and buy from you and it eliminates the need for many middlemen (and therefore – the need for those jobs).   Billions of people doing social media posts about your product or service makes controlling a brand or image dramatically more problematic.  What challenges will that create, and what million- or billion-dollar opportunities will it present?

Retail is dying. The business model for retail hasn’t really changed at all in at least a couple hundred years. In fact, we could really argue it got more cumbersome, as layers of rack jobbers, wholesalers, warehouses and other parasites got involved in the process.  What challenges will that create, and what million- or billion-dollar opportunities will it present?

Mobile changes everything!  If you were to force most people to chose between giving up their favorite websites versus their favorite apps – most people would lose the websites.  Mobile apps are hastening the irrelevance of traditional websites.   What challenges will that create, and what million- or billion-dollar opportunities will it present?

Please share your thoughts and let the masterminding and brainstorming begin!

  3. I'm not that familiar with these areas. But I think more and more oldfashioned retail will be replaced with MLM - so it will not be uncommen to be in more than one Network Marketing company.
Another thing I think will be important to be really successfull is to really BE YOURSELF! That is one way of offering something unique, as you then will not be in competition with "similars", there is only one you.
I do not know if this makes any sence to you, but I've been told when brainstorming every comment can lead to something unique 🙂

  5. I've resently had this idea of starting a community of people with the common goal of helping people achieving success. This goal we have in common and 1 adress to be contacted. Then people can come and enjoy a cup of healthy coffee or tea, and some homemade, homegrown bread or...And then they can, while enjoying this look at the different possibilities and talk to a person that can help them find what serves them best. Don't know if this already excists - but have not seen this here in Denmark. We can make events, courses, guest speakers, and so on.

  7. Well Randy ,In my opinion Retail is not dying . It is only unorganised Retail (Mom & Pop Stores ) that will have a threat for extinction. This decade will see unprecedented growth of Retail - contributed by 3 categories ( and these are IDC & Gartner projections too , btw ) , Company Direct Retail Outlets , LFR (Large Format Retails ) and most importantly , Online Retails. Online Retail (B2C) is one of the fastest growing trend of this decade , eliminating all the middlemen in evrey area ;i.e.IT, Technology , Healthcare , Home shop etc.

  9. The future is about branded entertainment since mobile device usage shows heavy stats in the games/entertainment content space. As a result, sponsoring or getting product placement within the content produced could be the best place to get brand recognition. As far as retail, buying strictly online has its challenges since the consumer is unable to 'feel' a product, try it on or experience how it looks, works, etc. When spending upwards of $1000 on a device, a suit, or a many times this for a car, a warm body and place to see or experience it first hand still has value. My two cents though no huge ideas spring to mind. And from the looks of it, I'm not alone in this community. In fact I'm kind of stunned there are only 3 comments all made by Ms. Hansen 🙂

  11. Social Media:
Branding steps into the field of nature & science and will become an evolutionary process for each presenter. Nothing stays the way it is: the best chameleon will survive and evolve with the markets needs!

  13. Just reading your book and I have to say... Well done! I am venturing into new market space with a product I know parents want and who I know are tired of the same old solutions, but it definitely requires new thinking, (or some rethinking anyway). The Industry Giants have no interest which amazes me, but they have invested heavily in their current long standing solutions and that makes them reluctant to move--until it is in their face. A mistake nonetheless.
The barrier to entry is high for my start-up. (equipment necessary to make the product to prove the concept is currently out of reach). I haven't started trying to raise funds yet, but I intend to provide a copy of your book with each pitch I do in the future. Until then, I'm following your advice jumping in to Social Media to get feedback and build ground up support! Now...to figure out how to navigate the SM space. I think I'm going to need a teenager!

  17. With social media, it level the playing field. A one-man operation can embark on the branding strategy. Unlike the traditional way which is costly, and only the big boys can do that. Opportunities grew tremendously with social media + mobile. Develop some apps and you are set for world wide market. Ultimate leverage.
