What’s Holding You Back?

Posted By: Randy GageApril 28, 2009

So what holds you back from attempting things that are bigger, bolder, or more daring than anything you have ever attempted before?

OK, you try new things.  Attempt new ventures.  But how much do you really risk?  And what stops you from risking more?

Is it fear of failing, or fear of succeeding?  Is it fear of the unknown, or fear of the known?  Do you stretch because you are running away from something, or running to something?

It’s worth some thought.  Check in and let us know how you think you do in this area.

  1. I believe that I am too inconsistent ... I allow other ideas and the "stuff" of life to slow me down ... still working on it though ...

  2. Good thoughts here - Fear makes people do funny things - The fear of looking bad or failing keeps people on the side walk and out of the adventure of learning something new - I prefer to go mudd'en myself !!

  3. I think that there are two $1m questions here:

1, What is the cost in the future of NOT doing something and
2, If I do fail, what is the cost in the future of NOT doing something again.

I don't mean, eat cake/not eat cake - this is about life, career and prosperity. Most people only "fail" because they perceive it this way. Then they go and try to "weatherproof" their lives, removing all the insecurities and ending up more insecure to boot! I have failed loads of times - I even remember that I fell off my bike when I was learning to ride it, aged 5. What a complete failure! No - within 10 seconds I was up and riding again. What's happened to us?

What stops people is lack of persistence, inconsistency and not learning to adapt and move forward. Thats my two-peneth worth anyhow. Good to connect with everyone on your great site Randy.

  4. Without a doubt, THE most critical question to ask ourselves.

And once we're able to uncover the Truth, the flood gates will open up pouring into our lives the infinite Abundance available.

My Truth is Fear of Success and deep down feeling unworthy of it. But as I meditate and let go, I learn to view the world differently. After all, how we view the Life we have is how it will show up.

    Thanks Randy!

  5. Good question, Randy. For me, I think it lies in the nature of "risk" itself. It's obvious that risk involves the possibility of failure. But risk also must involve SOME possibility of success too. (Otherwise, it's just a "suicide mission.")

So when I'm on a "losing streak" (as discussed in your earlier post), it's difficult to be confident that success is indeed a possibility. And if I don't have at least a chance of succeeding, why bother trying at all?

So for me, it's not fear of failure that stops me, but rather a lack of confidence in any chance of success. And that ties back into the need to celebrate "small victories" as described in the earlier post.

  6. Randy: let's dig deeper into Fear of Failure and Fear of Success - It's one of the two, but I'm not clear.

    All my best,
    Joe

  7. I must be suffering from some sort of fear, but I think my real problem is that I do not know myself well. There are too many excellent ideas in front of me, and I am in the middle of all of it, wondering how to choose which one would be THE one to devote myself to.I end up doing whatever seems formost in my mind each day.I enjoy all of it, but wonder if I should make a choice and concentrate and really make a name for myself.

  8. I fear that people will find out that I havent got a clue what I am doing- even when I know exactly what I am doing. I know that it is old programming, but I think that bit about stretching to run away from something- really rings true. I press against that extremely uncomfortable sensation- anxiety really- hoping that somehow the part that makes me anxious will figure out that I am NOT an blundering idiot.

  9. I read that as "content with confidence in success as a possibility" and I snapped to attention! There is a degree of extreme truth there.. Do you think THAT is enough to make us comfortable enough to not be as ambitious as we need to be?

    Thank you for your post!

  10. What stops me? In general it is a combination of the internal dialog that always finds fault with everything and the number of hours in the day. When I program some 'wins' into the day along with failure designed to learn something I can end the day with more energy than I began. Looking back over the day and planning tomorrow sets up the stretch for dream land to work on. Since I began expanding my dreams in front of me daily I do not become discouraged. I control the effort. I leave the outcome up to the Universe. Success IS 99% failure. Thank you Randy for who you are and making this possible.

  11. I belive that what will my friends, family and other will say about my dream of a new experience can be seen as too "irational"....or that I will have to face the chalange of some change in my confort zone wich I love...

  12. I'm still afraid to expose myself to strangers. It's that first step that keeps haunting me. What do i say? How do i present myself. What will they think of me? I need to believe more in myself. Daily training will get me there.

  13. Randy -

Great question! For me, I experienced a huge breakthrough when I stopped focusing on the money and using accumulation as the score card and started focusing only on the people I was serving.

My personal mission grew from this: To sow increase into the lives of others by co-creating wealth and abundance.
Once I internalized this decision everything changed an my path is unfolding everyday on dynamic ways.

Thank you for shedding light on these principles.

    I wish you every blessing!

  14. There's a lot of things holding people back and most of it are in what is called the subconscious or unconscious but more correctly on a spiritual level. We tend to go along on a five sense level to things we are “educated” not to understand the consequences of on a spiritual level. Then we wonder why.

Have you ever wondered what "Amen" really means for example? What do you really do when you say and emotionally go along with "Amen"? Who is “Amen”? Put the word “Amen” in the beginning of the prayer instead and you see what I mean. How come there is so much sun symbolism everywhere? Are you a sun (son) worshipper? What does that mean? Or are you perhaps at war with God (yourself) and have to “surrender”? Have you checked it out or you just go blindly on what "tradition" or whateverthefuck tells you? Those were just examples, and the same goes for what company you’re involved in, what flag, song, symbol, person etc. you pay any kind of emotional respect to in any way, your “friends” and “boss” included!

It is furthermore mind control and programming holding people back, but don't forget the big one: spiritual permission for someone or something else to rule you, of course mostly through various forms of deception. They don’t need your permission on a five sense level but will go to great lengths to get your spiritual permission.

Affirmations, deprogramming, "positive" thinking, visualizations and a lot of other things help but is not enough.

Wow, that sounds really "negative", right? But no, since only the truth can set you free.

And, do your own thing. You will ultimately understand that you can fly with it!

  15. I really put my heart into something, then I hold myself back by doing what I call "busy" work. I spend too much time preparing to get the job done instead of just going for it. I tell myself I'm getting prepared & organized to do the job right. It doesn't make sense why I continue to do this....fear of rejection I think...which is of course is most likely fear of success, I guess? I always tell myself that next month I'll have more capitol and I'll really work hard next month....all the while I watch team members start with absolutely nothing and just bust out of the box and achieve great success almost immediatlely.

  16. Hi Randy,
I think for myself there is of course a combination of things at work. There is the fear of the unknown, the fear of failure and also I think a fear of rejection.
In my victim mentality I only knew rejection, so I am working on not expecting bad all the time and start looking for the good.

I get really good ideas on different things but than I'm stymied by thoughts of "oh, nobody's gonna want to do that"... etc.

This is something I have become more aware of lately and I am working on getting over it to get what I want.

I also know, I am very afraid of the unknown. It scares the crap out of me to think what will be involved with the running of my opera company say 5 years from now.
Even a year from now, as I plan our first full production . I know the basics of running an opera company, but it is all that unknown stuff that tends to pop up that keeps giving me pause.

I just have to keep telling myself, I can do this and to just take small steps one at a time.
It also helps to have some very supportive family members around me.

When it comes to Network marketing, I had a lot of rejection early on. My major blast was a major bust. I really don't know where to go from that. So, I know there is a major fear of rejection with that.

Anyway, that is where I'm at with everything. Some days are better than others.

Thanks for keeping it real with us Randy.

  17. Interesting questions ... I find for myself that it is always easier to stay in my comfort zone. But I never dealt with why it is that way. I guess on some level it is fear of failing and a fear of unknown. I do see that I stretch "for things" from time to time but the outcomes of either failing/succeeding are not detrimental or unknown, the outcome of failing is benign so no real risk taken. I guess I am not in a place that I feel comfortable taking risks at the moment. But it something to further consider when I schedule my quiet thinking time (with by background noise).

  18. I am totally dis-focus now, too many debts on my previous business, trying to clear them and wanted to succeed too in my new area of business now but every now and then people and chasing me for money. I try to hold them up longer but they are persistent on their ground.

  19. I have failed before, so it can't be fear of failure. I have had some successes, though not the huge success I thought I would have by now. I can so relate to Friday's comment though, so perhaps that is where the work is required?

  20. A lot of negative affirmations here ! and Randy always says never affirm a negative.
What I say is - Go for it - Life is too short - Stop thinking am I this or am I that and what will happen if........Just do it.!!! It really works and you dont have to send it to five friends and expect a response in four minutes, or turn into a toad.

    love Angie

  21. I think it is the fear of not participating in what the 98% is doing. We all want to be in the 2%, but it comes at a price. The price is ...... fill in the blank, because the prices is different for eveyone. Everyone wants a great life, but most are not willing to let go of their average life. I believe we put things off one more day and one more day and then one more day until, eventually, we look up and the one more day is a year or two years.

Whatever business you are in give it your "prime time", not your "left overs". Have an awesome day!!

  22. Amen to your revelation. Know the Truth and the Truth will indeed set us free from the entanglement of useless thoughts and solutions that will only frees us temporary

  23. What stops me is limited beliefs about what I can do. However, that is changing thanks blogs like this!
