What Makes You Great

Posted By: Randy GageFebruary 3, 2011

So last weekend I shared the stage with Boyd Matheson in Spain and he was talking about the difference between world-class athletes in competition.  And how often the difference is the length of a skate, half a stroke, or a hundredth of a second.   The next morning I was doing cardio in the gym and Euro Sport was televising a downhill ski competition.  What a perfect demonstration of this…

These skiers were racing down a mountain at breathtaking speeds on a run that lasted about two minutes.  They were going so fast, that a slip up on any turn would probably result in a concussion, some serious broken bones, or even death.

While I was doing the elliptical machine, seven guys competed.  The biggest difference in the times of ALL of them was 2.1 seconds.  That was one guy; the laggard.  Every one of the other five guys behind the leader were within tenths or hundredths of a second.  On a run down a steep mountain for two minutes!

And that’s how it is when you go for greatness.  At the world-class level, the differences are minuscule.  So what made those skiers great?  And what makes YOU great?

Someone won the gold medal.  A couple other guys won the silver and bronze.  But those medals didn’t make them great.  Those medals simply acknowledged that the world recognized them as great.

What made them great were the extra practice runs they did.  The visualization they did beforehand.  The choices they made to get up early to train, and the foods they chose to put in their body.  The small incremental decisions they made every day…

You don’t create your future.  You create your daily habits and they create your future.

So what does greatness mean for you?  And what are the choices that get you there?

  1. I think that other people have made me great. I would not be where I am today if it were not for people like yourself Randy and other great teachers (including some enemies who taught me the biggest lessons). It is people like yourself who give me something to aim for. I choose to improve myself and my life to be the greatest that I can be so that I can help others do the same through my work.

  2. RG - my comment was blocked because it contained the word p0rn, and then when it said 'go back and edit' i did, but then it was deleted and nothing to edit. Anyway i shall write again.
Well the line you write about the medals not making them great and only symbolising others acknowledging them is a HUGE point. i made the mistake for many years just chasing the image of success.i would chase stuff that made me look good, popular and appear rich. even though i was broke. in short there was no substance behind anything, just a fragile cover of 'success'. and i was getting nowhere, and im still nowhere. I have a long way to go. even though i knew this, i was like a fat man trying to resist cake, i couldnt help myself, i did it anyway. Only very recently have i realised, so many years have passed and my ego was chasing image and not substance, and now i have nothing to show for it. So now, i am slowly but surely watching myself and doing things that matter, and stopping myself whenever i catch myself trying to do stupid $hit to impress others. to reach my greatness i realise i have to have a big vision and connect with it everyday so that it will keep me committed and persistent, i also have to cut out all my time wasting bull$hit like surfing facebook for hours, television, the internet, online p0rn, gossiping, sleeping all day and eating junkfood & staying up late that makes me sleep all day. so my road ahead is a very long one, but im going to look myself in the mirror each day and say be honest with urself dude. i know i have been lying to myself for a long time. slowly starting to change and im liking it. 🙂 im looking around my room and seeing clean floors .........not covered in dirty laundry! LOL! 🙂
    peace!

        1. well i have my BE, DO and HAVE goals written down. Have to read them twice a day now. I feel powerful when i read them. my downfall is I worry too much about what others think about me and when i worry i waste days, weeks and months. How would you suggest i stop worrying about others opinions. I worry if people think im fat, so ill stay at home. I worry if people think I have a low-salary job so I lie and make up something better. i pretend im happy with everything so others wont think bad of me if i tell them the truth. Im thinking i should look at the long term goal and even though i work steadily at it now and im honest about where im at, in the long run, i would have work really well towards something. but do you have any suggestions about how i stop worrying about others opinions right now??? maybe i should meditate and be really comfortable with who I am? im lost on this one

          1. The more secure you are with yourself the less you will worry what others think of you.

Know at the end of the day the only person's opinion that matters about you is yours. How you feel about yourself and the choices you have made. That is how I look at it. If I do something I don't like, I try not to do it again. Try sometimes being the key word. Eventually it will work out.

Know you are loveable and worthy no matter what happens. Besides, how can we really know what others are thinking about us. And it does not matter anyway, we are the final judges of ourselves. And as long as you are doing what you think is right, others opinions don't matter anyway.

Feeling great when it comes from within is far more lasting than the greatness one feels from the applause of a crowd, awards of achievement, material gains, or the idealization of fans. It is the contentment of knowing no matter what, you love you and no one can take that away from you.

Wanting approval of others, is probably the left over desire of our childhoods to be loved perfectly by our parents. We may never get that from our parents or anyone else, but you can get it from yourself. When you love yourself you find empathy for yur flaws and love yourself anyways, and then you give this genorisity of love to others. And you can then feel the love others have for you even though you know you are not perfect.

It's process, I know. 🙂 Give yourself a lot of license to mess up! 🙂 I have to do this too.

        2. Yes the Youtube video was informative. I have removed 2 very bad influences in my life, now I have no friends. So I will be searching for new positive friends. I will watch more of your videos.

          1. Hi!
Same with me.I have now friends now.Met one of my old friends sunday and it was a trauma for me to see how negative she was and know that I had a lot do do with her two years ago when my life was very sad in almost everything and I realized she had a lot to do with that and that I had chosen her as a friend.I have been in chock since sunday. And I guess, because I still don´t have any nice and positive friends around me still something is wrong.Very painful.

          2. Dan and Mo, hi! Same question was here, I found Randy's advice to create a 'virtual' team of friends very helpful. My virtual friends are Randy Gage, Tony Robbins, Jim Rohn, and a few others. I connect to them via Facebook, Twitter, their blogs and books, YouTube, events, etc.
And forums like this are great source of virtual friends.
What I have seen in a few short months is that I connected with some of those people in person, eventually.
And as I followed Randy's and other's advice I see that I am connecting with other people in everyday life as well. But now I am always on a look out before I establish a closer relationship.
            Hope this helps! Larissa

  3. "You don’t create your future. You create your daily habits and they create your future." I love it!

(Aristotle, another pretty smart dude, said it as, "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.")

Checking in here every day is one of the new habits I'm currently trying to form. Thanks for a great post, Randy!

  4. I understand your belief in your abilities and worth are what will be 99% of your results. Reading your comment reminded me of a triathlete by the name of Greg Welch, notorious for his "poor" dietary regime yet his ability to win the iron man. If you believe you need to eat a certain way to win then you have to or you will not win. There are many examples of "greats" who are "outside the box". If I believe I need to do something to achieve a goal, I will not achieve my goal unless I adhere to my belief. Someone else may need to do something else to achieve the same goal, and that's ok! When someone tells you that you can't achieve "X" unless you do "Y", if you believe them, then they are right. If you believe you, then you are right.
Does this make sense or am I running you in circles?
Your physical manifestation is the end result of of your mental self image.
    Have a brilliant one!

    1. Excellent comments Brian! Very powerful truths to what you are saying that are overlooked by the vast majority of people.

    2. Greatness to me simply means being better than the vast majority of people in whatever endeavor that your are undertaking. The choices that you make to get there are to engage in activities in your endeavor that the vast majority of people are unwilling to engage in.

So for instance, many people want to have a great body. However, the vast majority of people are out of shape. The people with the great bodies have them because they are willing to engage in activities that are proven to make that a reality (i.e a disciplined eating and exercise regiment)

  5. For me personally, greatness means to be good at simple, everyday things - taking care of myself and my loved ones, other people, making right choices, persistency and prioritizing. Greatness comes from from "small" things, I wish I realized that many, many years ago.

  6. Very inspirational and encouraging post! Your post are some of the best that I read. I can surely relate to this post as I went through real estate investment training with my mentor and he made similar quotes. It's amazing how God has given us all abilities and yours is the ability to encourage and motivate others. I look fwd to meeting you in Vegas!

  7. For me it is just creating the discipline to be constantly aware of my goal of being world class! Never affording myself the luxury of a lack thought. Thanks Randy

  8. Randy to respond to your inquiry -

I have a descriptive vision statement for my life with a complementing screen saver on my lap top. The vision is read periodically and the pictures I see daily as a reminder to seek God, apply sound wisdom and make the right choices that will take me closer to the vision. This alignment is with everything - people, places, activities, prayers and thoughts. Some days I am dormant, some days I am proactive and some days I am moderate, some days I am reactive but nevertheless, the desire to move toward living my ideal life is ALWAYS AT THE FORE.

    Thank you for sharing.

  9. I quit a pretty good "job" to go out on my own about 2 years ago and it was only then that I realized how undisciplined I was. Corporate America was easy because if people like you then you could advance. The real world of business works a little differently and it was a slap in the face with some reality that made me realize I needed to become more disciplined with my daily habits and gain a routine. This is an ongoing habit I am forming and it is great to see people who have been in my shoes and are now very successful talk about this subject.

Thanks Randy for your real world views and comments and thanks to Twitter for allowing me to connect with so many like-minded people.

  10. I agree with Jaime. I used to be really good in corporate america and then I lagged when it became apparent to me that the system was not working. Putting in my very best no longer seemed worth it. As I build my own business now I see where my deficiencies are. I have put in place some really good, daily actions that will make me and my business world class!
    The secret is the tracking!

  11. Another take on this is yes, as you detailed above, the difference between winners and losers is many times just a very slight difference... whether that be in sports business, etc. But on the flip side the gap in rewards are enormous. For example, the rep or company who wins a contract might have paid a little more attention to the details, and that gave them just a fraction of an edge to win. Now they reap all the financial rewards.

  12. Greatness for me means many things, though the highest and best I can contribute to the world is Numero Uno! And no, it's not about being in service to everyone, but instead transforming.

Setting out to make a difference and living a life of Abundance in all areas is what's important to me. And being the "master of my thoughts' is the key. As you've said before, it's so important to be the 'thinker of the thoughts' since it's out thoughts that manifest our reality.

And when it comes to being TRULY great, it's becoming a leader by inspiring people to do more, learn more, become more and dream more.

    Thanks RG!

  13. To me, greatness means outstanding results. Getting there involves discipline, deciding what and who is important and focusing attention there, and trusting my gut instinct.

  14. Real food has life force energy in it. What people eat doesn't, which is why they have to take a nap digesting it, while they get sick from malnutrition.

And stop looking for "things you can afford", or "cheap and small cars and homes that make your wallet smile" etc.

What are you doing to yourself and why?

  15. There's an old saying around sports - "Any given team on any given day".

I firmly believe that the first step, the very first building block that must be laid is that in your mind. For you can do every physical rep, stretch, exercise, movement in the world but if you don't visualize yourself as a champion you will never be one.

And where do those positive habits (and unfortunately the bad habits as well) reside? In your brain. Your psyche.
Visualization is the glue that makes the practiced habits stick.

From there, everything else falls into place.

Great article, Randy! Enjoy your stuff!

  16. Good question, Randy!
Yes, your point is revealing: Our habits are part of our achievements!

If our habits are part of our greatness, how much more can we achieve if we choose to step out beyond habits? Then watch THOSE things become habits...

  17. Randy you are an example for me and I eagerly read the new information but as I have with English is not really something I use a translator and ask apologies for unanswered letters yesterday I registered in the business and now the team Ata Mamedova

  18. Reading The Fountainhead, by Ayne Rand right now, and I think her protagonist, Howard Rourke is what personifies greatness in man.
He is a purist, and though no one in society will accept, or even admit that his architecture is brilliant, he refuses to change his style or commercialize himself.
He remains true to his belief of what architecture should be, and this belief in absolute truth, this total consciousness of what he is doing is right, even if society deems it isn't. That, right there is greatness in man. So maybe, total acceptance of who we are, and what we believe, even if this doesn't bid well with other - it what makes one great. The ability to persevere and believe in yourself, no matter what the consequences - that for me, is greatness.

      1. Yes, it is a wonderful book. Reading her entire anthology right now and exploring the idea of objectivism.

  19. HI.. RANDY SIR,

I LOVE THESE TWO LINES ....THEY ARE THE BEST ONES ...

"You don’t create your future. You create your daily habits and they create your future"

  20. Oh I Love That

"You don’t create your future. You create your daily habits and they create your future."

Liike what Jeff Olsen says in the slight edge

"Daily Disciplines Compounded Over Time Change ur Life"

  21. There is a line where if you are on one side, perhaps beneath it, the effort and struggle seem to only create more of it and getting across or over the line is a major deal. On the other side the same ‘efforting’ produces remarkable results and moves you further past the line. Job 1; do whatever is necessary to get over the line. Much of what was difficult will either disappear or no longer be relevant. Job 2; stay above the line. Do not let an hour pass that doesn't keep you moving in the direction of your dreams. Every current habit either needs to be replaced with one that puts you into action above the line or is supported and improved upon. “You don’t create your future. You create your daily habits and they create your future.”

  22. Greatness happens when you love yourself unconditionally. At that point, you support yourself with all your heart and soul.

Then it gets fun. You begin to feel good about every action you take. You challenge yourself and, because you have complete confidence, every action you take brings you closer to being the best version of yourself.

    That's greatness to me.

Thanks for the inspiration, Randy. Thanks to everybody for sharing your thoughts. Being generous with your own greatness.

  23. Hey Randy,

Success is not just a purpose, it's the way of life. for to get the medal we have to dedicate much time and training every day,
persistency, for to get the achievement, and the medal.
