What Are You Obsessing About?

Posted By: Randy GageMay 20, 2010

I told you in the last post that the difference between people with empty lives, versus people with meaningful ones, is simply the things they choose to have obsessions about.

Go to any football stadium here in the States some Sunday during the season.  It’s nothing to see some 350-pound slob, shirtless in 30-degree weather (Fahrenheit), with the team colors painted on his beer belly, and a crazy mask or hat getup.  They are obsessed with their team.

One of the guys on a softball team I used to be on was obsessed with Madonna.  He knew the release date of every record she did, and played her songs on his answering machine with messages like, “That was Madonna singing her 23rd top ten hit, leave me a message at the beep.”  That’s the kind of thing you might do when you were 13.  He was 30.

Now I ask you—are obsessions such as these going to lead to a life of meaning and fulfillment?  Will they help these guys manifest prosperity?  Will it help them discover and act on their assignment in life?

I have obsessions...

At least three that I can think of right now.  Softball is an obsession.  Relationships are an obsession.  And so is prosperity.  Let’s look at them...

Now softball isn’t making me rich (money-wise anyway), doesn’t further my assignment, and it won’t save the world.  But it is one of my favorite things in the world to do.  So it brings me great joy, it keeps me from getting stressed, it gives me great exercise and a reason to train.  So it does a lot for my mental and physical health.  Good deal.  Glad I have this obsession.

I’m obsessed about relationships.  I’m fiercely protective of my consciousness and mindset, so I am hypercritical about who I let into my life.  I only want people who are real.  They will tell me the truth and I can tell them the truth.  They don’t waste my time blathering about inane things like the weather, gossip and trivia.  And most importantly, they don’t talk negative lack messages.  I enjoy being with them, and I can’t wait to see them again.  They bring value into my life, and I bring value into theirs.  Otherwise, I move on.

Prosperity is my other obsession.  I devour anything I can find on the subject.  I think about it all the time.  I set up my life to live by prosperity principles, and surround myself with prosperous people.  I self-censor every book, TV show, movie or radio program I listen to, based upon these principles.  My spirituality is grounded upon this philosophy.

So what are your obsessions?

Do they take you toward where you want to be?  Or move you away from your dreams?

I’m sure you look great in those Vulcan ears you wear to the Star Trek convention, but does that really serve you?  Give it some real thought and please share your thoughts with the group.

  1. Hi Randy

I think things such as going to Star Trek conventions (if thats your thing), going to watch your football team play etc can be great and a wonderful display of prosperity but they can also be detrimental.

They can bring joy to your life. They can also put you in the way of others who share that common interest and valuable friendships can develop from that. You can often take such passions and make a business around it and make tons of money doing something you love - what a tremendous display of prosperity.

On the flip side take the beer swilling guy who goes to watch the football game. It usually includes lots of alcohol and food which can be adverse to health. So that can end up very anti prosperity.
Even if you are living your assignment, thats great, but are you putting so much into it that you are neglecting your spouse and kids?

Also we need to be aware of the phenomenon of giving up a passion to do something more "proper" such as to become a doctor or lawyer when we have no interest in those fields.

I think our obsessions can often be roads to our assignment.

Critical thought and a good dose of being honest with ourselves is definitely required.

    Regards
    Ari

  2. One of my "obsessions" is spirituality (not religion! big difference!) Everything and anything that brings me closer in my relationship with God, I give attention to. I dedicate daily time to prayer and meditation. It's a great obsession. It grounds my daily life in activities that brings me a sense of higher purpose in everything I do. It grounds my personal life, relationships, family as well as my "productive" life.

Another obsession is learning. I've set the goal years ago to learn at least 3 new ideas every day. It might be a book, a video, a seminar, an audio, a conversation. I enjoy any activity that brings new and valuable information to my life, both in the personal areas and business or productive area.

  3. Hi Randy,
The passion and obsession depend on each other. I work with top athletes, if there is passion and obsession in his mind, never achieved an Olympic gold. Olympic Gold gives you prosperity. The passion and obsession gives you focus to achieve your goals, but make you look crazy to others. Germany will win the World Cup in South Africa because they are obsessed with the cup since 2006. They are the only ones who have worked passionately to achieve it.
    Regards,
    MV

  4. I like visiting this website. It forces me to think. Contributing to the comments is fun too. I am obsessed with mountain biking. During the season I go biking at least 4 times a week and it at least 2 hours per ride. This is done after work in the Don Valley in Toronto. It is like a wilderness in the middle of the city. There is much hill climbing which really gets the heart and legs working. It is fun and has tremendous health benefits. I put together a Superbike which is lightweight and super strong and can't wait to get back in the saddle. Gotta go attend to something.

  5. As you venture into a new life, because going into MLM and starting to work on yourself will change your life, you focus on self growth and that leads to prosperity, so you surround yourself with anything and everything that will help you reach it, if you are really set on what and why you want something and yes, you start pulling away from many things in your life, starting from friends to some hobbies and yes you scan them even relationships, so Randy, you are absolutely right, but you see, only those who are serious about growing in a personal level and becoming free are able to see it, and are willing to let go of the things that give you nothing in your life.
I have learned this and am living this and to tell you the truth, I HAVE NEVER FELT BETTER!!!!!!!!!
    HAVE AN AMAZING DAY!!

  6. Hi Jose, I loved your comment & feel the same. I am replying to your post because I just recently found a book that makes that same distinction of being spiritual (closer to God) yet having nothing to do with Religion.
I promise you that I Do Not know the author personally nor gain any financial benefit from this suggestion. As a matter of fact I took a friend of mine to BigLots (her car was in the shop) and as she went to get her things I glanced thru their book section ($3.00) and found this: "A Renegade's Guide To God" by David Foster. After reading the Jacket Cover I just had to get it... and so far the first 3 chapters are remarkable. It is Not about Religion. It is about You & Your Personal Relationship with God. Anyway I hope I satisfied your Learning Obsession and it is one of the 3 things you'll learn today.

RG Thanks for this Post, you did make me think. Although I need to sit & contemplate this in depth later to look at my life and find other positive obsessions. Currently I'd say I have two.
1- To Help others Grow Financially & become Independant. My Goal is to help teach others how to create other income streams so that they are not left out in the cold or in a lurch at the whim of the economy. I want to teach them "Diversification" in all aspects of their Lives.
2- For Myself, To become Financially Independant so that I can Donate My Time & Money to my favorite causes Globally.

I found you thru Jessica Kioreck (BadassBW), sorry I think I just masacred her last name, but I'm grateful to her for that.
I look forward to reading more in the future & RTing you!

  7. Hi Randy:
I know everyone has to have something to be obssesive about, what can I do to discover this things.

    Thank you for your flashlight.

  8. A very interesting blog, Randy. It makes us think about what the true values that are particularly important to us that could help us lead a happy life and being obsessed about.

[My obsessions in life which moves toward where I want to be are as follows]:

    ● Creative arts (painting/hand crafts) and music (singing/jazz) which I am gifted that I can't live without which give me the way to express myself. I am fully alive when I perform these and when I share the same with people who are gifted in these areas.

    ● ● To become more and more prosperous by keeping faith/belief, not waivering.

    ● Yes, I am obsessed about truly good relationships with good friends that I have who know how I am inside an out and what makes me happy (naturally laid back and funny), and vice versa. In order to help remain/maintain in that state, I've finally learned to let in only those who are like-minded people whom we could share the values to contribute one another, instead of accepting them all whoever I run into. When I was very young, not knowing much about life, I tended just to be nice with whoever comes across my life without really understanding and just for the sake of just being nice. When we grow older, having gone through enouh of enough, the positive side of what life brings was to finally find out about who we are and what finally makes us happy deep inside. So, in terms of the relationships, when I find myself excited about the time being spent with truly good friends whom I can express my true self or vice versa, I am fully alive and happy. Life should be good, and it is.

    ● To meet new like-minded people in terms of the new business venture that I have just begun lately. I'm now obsessed about experiencing to meeting new people and to develop new relationships, to love, to share time, kindness, perhaps hopefully faith as well. To reach out and touch people. When I see people happy because of what I may have done for them, that makes a difference in my life and find myself happy and fulfilled.

    ● To remain and become the kind of person whom I know I want to be and whom I know God wants me to be, by knowing and accepting the real me inside, which is, I am absolutely the same person inside and outside wherever I go, and also by learning sometimes to be selective and/weed out those who do not contribute to my obsession to enjoy life and to continually help improve life to a successful one.

    ---

[*What interferes with my obsessions about the relationships/ friendships and turns me off:]

    ● Manipulative one-side-tracked mind/pushy attitude to get only what one wants.
    ● Self-centeredness.
    ● Taking advantage of the goodness found in a person, instead of appreciating it and being grateful.
    ● Gossips - I hate gossips and I don't gossips, and I never will. Period. A gossip is something that takes away our trust, respects, and sadly the desire for a long-term love relationship with a person. Gossiping/making up stories, wherever one goes is not positive and do not contribute to the prosplrity/& mental health.
    ● Dishonesty with a lack of integrity, lying and cheating in business practices TURNS ME OFF.
    ● Superficiality and Arrogant Mannerism.
    ● Unfeelingness, rigidness, and cold impersonal attitude, like a cold air penetrating through in another's heart.

I enjoyed today's post, as always. You truly are an expressive, honest, and true-to-your-feeling-AND-true-to-yourself person, when you describe yourself in the blog. You don't cover up yourself to be someone else, or making you look good, but being honest with/about your true self. That's something I like about you as a person, and the trainer, and I respect you very much. Thank you. Hope you're rested from such a long trip. May God continues to bless you,, Randy. love and hugs:: -saachi

  9. Recently I have developed an obsession that for once is good for me, walking.

I am out of shape and I could blame a lot of things, like work etc but the reality is I eat too much and exercise too little.

I walk in the snow, in the rain, in good weather or bad.

To achieve all of my other goals I have to have my health.

  10. Another obsession would be this website. It's a great learning tool. I visit it every day except for the past few days and it looks like I missed alot. I am slowly learning how to be prosperous. My thinking is changing, albeit slowly but surely. Obsession No. 3 would be health. I am not a health nut but I avoid excessive amounts of Fats and Sugars and know what not to eat. I eat mostly raw fruits and vegetables along with oatmeal every morning. Obsession No. 4 would be weightlifting. Any day that is not a cardio workout I try and sqeeze in at least 40 minutes in to maintain strength. I devised a workout that gets all the major muscles ( 6 exercises in total ) in the lower and upper body. Obsession No. 5 is growing my enterprise so it will result in a recognizable brand and ongoing business so it could be sold for the maximum amount when retirement age is reached. I hate to admit it, but sometimes I think of negative things like when bad things have happened to me in the past at the hands of other people. Some go back to childhood and some during my teenage years. These no good sons o'bitches done me wrong and I'd love to get back at them. These are unresolved conflicts I guess and it would be best to let them go.

  11. RG,

Once again a great topic. I liked what Jose shared. I am obsessed (passionate) about my personal relationship with the God inside me. I am becoming obsessed with studying acting. I know this is an obsession as I can't wait for the night of the class and it seems like 3 hours are 5 minutes.

I know that I have blocked a lot of my good coming to me. I catch those thoughts coming in and I have to work at stopping them. I still catch me living in the "what will people say"? I think that is why I like acting. You can be anything or anyone and the "Other people" expect and want it.

I also think with these "magnificent obsessions" I can see me in the visualization internalization. It is easier for me to see me on a stage with 5000 people in the audience than to see a downline of 500.

    Jim Story
PS. I know your softball team and the Madonna example describes half of Wilton Manors. LOL...

  12. Why do I stop reading these? I keep seeing your posts in my inbox but haven't read them in awhile (too busy? - for my own mental health I suppose!). These always seem to be the mental defibulator for my brain to get me closer to myself. Been lost, physically gone and no motivation which is unusual for me. But yes, finally on the road up. Obsession is something I didn't realize I needed (and desperately need to get back). As an artist, I am OBSESSED with creating. Used to spend hours without even knowing it in my studio. Stimulates creativity, accomplishment, relaxation... all of it.

Can you believe I haven't painted in over a year? I'm on it!

    Thanks for the "kick".

  13. Despite all that I know, I have been obsessing (and blaming myself) with all the relationship issues I have been experiencing lately not realising that everyone who has "unusually" left my life have all been negative people...only a few months ago, I asked, please give me peace, harmony and joy. Perhaps I should have said and please make the process enjoyable too.

I am obsessed with Creating Happiness in all aspects but keep forgetting the golden rule of being happy first.
