Valuing Yourself

Posted By: Randy GageMarch 27, 2012

So I did something last week a lot of people would think is crazy.  (Actually probably did a lot of things people would think are crazy, but that’s beside the point.)  I brought in a contractor to cut holes in my walls and move outlets and light switches.

Why?

Because they weren’t centered.  Call me nuts or OCD, but if there is a receptacle on a four-foot wide wall, it should be centered two feet in, not 14 inches from one side.

One wall in my office had two light switches on it, and one was about half an inch higher than the other.  Stuff like that drives me crazy.  So I ended up cutting into five walls.

And while I was doing this, of course I upgraded them to the new style that doesn’t show any screws.  And did them in white to match the walls, not that drab beige stock developers use.

Now every time I look at a wall, I smile.  Can’t believe I didn’t do this two years ago.  It’s about having a harmonious energy and environment…

Now maybe you don’t even notice your electric outlets and couldn’t care less if you did.  That’s cool.  But here’s the point…

There are some things you do notice – things that are important to your peace and harmony.   They may be expensive, inexpensive, or even free.  It’s important that you do what’s necessary to have them in your life.  Not because you “need” them, but because they bring you joy.

When you decide you are worthy of these kinds of things, it just affirms your value to yourself.  It could be something as simple as washing your rental car, or making the bed in your hotel room because the maid is delayed.  Or it could be splurging on giving yourself a massage, a spa weekend, or even a new Bentley.

Money and materials things don’t give you happiness.  But they do allow you the self-expression that can give you happiness.

As I shared on my Facebook page last week, I can tell my prosperity consciousness is still growing.  I know because I just bought a new bathtub that cost $4,000.  There would have been a time in my life that I would have thought anyone doing that should be committed to an insane asylum!  Now I just saw it as the perfect fixture to finish off the new bathroom I’m creating.

So what about you?

What do you do to reward yourself, and affirm that you are worthy of prosperity?  Or is it the other side…

Do you feel guilty spending or doing things on yourself?  And if so, what are you doing to change it?

  1. Guilt is tied to Fear and in many cultures and ethnic groups, it's a BIG part of the beliefs and behaviors. In fact having grown up in an ethnic surrounding that fostered guilt I reject it at all costs. Therefore, I NEVER feel guilty about doing something that I THINK is best, or makes me feel good.

As the saying goes, "If it FEELS GOOD.... DO IT!"

How do you like your new wall sockets by the way Randy? 🙂

  3. I love to travel and I always fly private, when invited by friends (still working on the jet), or first class. I used to feel uncomfortable at first, watching people give you the, who the hell do you think you are look, as they passed by the first few rows of the aircraft Got over that quick.. The steam shower with the water and air purification, nasa rated, is fabulous. You don't even need to use soap to shave and your skin is like silk. My bedroom is a sanctuary of luxury and yes, I am considering buying a $46,000 mattress I saw in Robb Report. I love to be home and I enjoy living in a enviornment where I hear the crickets at night. The deer cross through the yard at 6pm every night and the ducks take their first bath in the pond at 5am. I don't eat anything that is not organic and only drink distilled or spring fed water. I no longer feel compelled to respond to the question, why aren't you with a man. I am not a hunter so I don't go out looking. I am sure it is not God's intention for me to be alone, but if it is, I'm fine. If God brings a man into my life, I know he will have hand picked him and I'm willing to wait or continue in my own bliss. I don't settle for societies standards and I am constantly grateful for all the luxuries in my life, especially the in the wall coffee grinding machine that grinds and brews a fresh cup of coffee for me on demand. The built in steamer is also a must. Push a button and you get perfect anything. I love to be at home and cuddle on the coach with the fireplace burning, perfect lighting, and a great movie or book. I love to get in the hot tub under the stars and then jump into the pool to cool down. If it were all gone tommorrow, I would be fine. It would be fun, as it has been getting it all back again. I love to pick fresh flowers and place them around the house, pick fresh fruit and make a great dessert. I have a central stereo system to adjust to whatever room I am in and I have a lilac tree outside my office so that when I open the windows in the spring, it fills the house with the smell. Do I deserve all this. Absolutely. Do people hate me for it. Absolutely. Do I care? No. There are be'rs and there are doers. I do and I become and I know it is available to anyone who wants it. It's a choice. Life is great when you understand and value what is important and what is not. I don't worship my things or attach myself to them, but I sure as heck enjoy them and live in gratitude for them. The universe has unlimited supply, you just have to be at the energy level and mindset that allows it to come to you, and yes, it's all to the glory of God. Live in the will of God and see what happens to you.

    1.  @maryellen514 I look at Robb report now and then. It's amazing how beautiful some of that stuff is. There's a lot of craft and heart that goes into it. It makes me feel more faith in what I am doing, and seeing where I could go.You don't see that as much in most mass produced goods made for the general public.I need to look at it more. Heck, have you ever looked at the Sotheby's real estate site? There's a modernized castle for sale in Europe for $50 million. Hehe Would be an awesome place not only to live, but to create a place for creative and entrepreneurial types to experiment in.

It's a great magazine. Randy recommended it years ago and I've been hooked ever since. It starts with a vision and that magazine is a great way to elevate your visualization to a level above the norm. Stick with Randy, apply his techniques and take action and always live in the will of God and the graces will come.

  5. Money and material things give me happiness and I am no longer afraid to admit it out of fear of being judged. When I had my home built I had all of the outlets centered and spent around $700.00 I believe on outlet and light switch covers. I love being surrounded by beautiful things.

  7. We spend a lot of time in our workspaces and in the bathroom. I've seen nice bathrooms. If the bathroom is nice, so is the rest of the house, and possibly the person's life.I would have no qualms about ensuring that I had a nice, comfortable place to work. After all, successful designers and artists have homes away from homes in their studio. No reason a musician/producer could' t benefit from a similar philosophy.Besides, having a nice space is not only great for yourself, but if you want to involve other people. Why do you think wealthy and successful people tend to have nice art and furniture in their offices or workspace? For the reasons Randy said.

  10. I confess: I've been pretty uncomfortable about spending money "frivolously - just to make me feel good."
I've never been a "shopper".  However....
Since I've been studying Prosperity, I've begun to be much more kind and loving and downright indulgent to ME.  You might laugh, Randy, at what I consider an indulgence - but if something feels indulgent to me, even if it costs "only" $5, it IS an indulgence.  The former-me would not have spent the $5; would have looked longingly at the pretty nail polish, would   have not-bought it.
Of course, part of this Big Issue is a judgement call:  My high-quality nutritional supplements and healthful skin-care products could be called "self-indulgent".   One chooses... if their prosperity level doesn't stretch to include All Choices.
      Let me ask you this:
Does paying for the top-dollar bathtub, and the electro-renovations, squeeze any part of your budget?  SHOULD self-indulgences challenge the budget?  Is that part of the definition of self-indulgences?  I find this topic pretty intriguing still.

  12. I love that you moved your light switches! I SOOO understand this. Will, who is color blind, has no understanding when I tell him how important it is to me that the colors in our home balance as I look from room to room. One of the things that brings me joy everyday is looking though the doorways to see how everything works together. If I move a vase, it is not uncommon for it to create a chain reaction to move everything else in the room until it is all balanced again. OCD? I don't think so. (but then again, all of the screws on my switch plates go perfectly up and down. I guess now I have to look for ones without screws:))

Anyway, as for rewarding myself lately, last week I moved three rose bushes because they were in the "wrong" place to create a welcoming entrance to my home. It bugged me every time I pulled in the driveway. Having them in the "right" place has brought me so much joy and I am excited now to see them grow and bloom all spring and summer.  I even planted two new bushes to balance out the entire front garden.  All winter, I wanted to kill the stupid rose bushes, now I am looking forward to having my own roses to cut all summer.

The other most recent investment in myself has been getting Rolfing. I just had the fifth session in five weeks and am LOVING the transformation. It's really profound. It would have been easy to convince myself that weekly sessions were "too" indulgent, but I just decided that my health would be a priority and that I wasn't going to drag the sessions out. It's been amazing.

Then there is the new soft as butter, yellow purse I bought this week....lots of joy there. So, I'm thinking, I don't  often feel guilty when I buy what brings me joy, but.... I do feel guilty however just stopping to read a book or taking a rest for more then 15 minutes at any given time. Someday, I will figure out  how to allow myself time to just stop "doing" during the day and simply read.
I bet your place looks great!
    Jeanne

    1. Funny how we use different aspects of this - I am not good at "buying" for self-indulgence, but way toooo good at sitting down with a book for 15...30....and more, minutes.  I hadn't thought of my moving of plants outdoors, vases indoors, as part of self-indulgence - that's just what I do to please my Highly Developed Aesthetic Sense, lol!   Thanks, Jeanne, for expanding my awareness that I really DO treat myself well.  "Prosperity" is an attitude, not a bank balance.

  14. You're really gifted in inspiring others, even seeing an opportunity to do so just by redecorating your house. Thank you for that.

  20. This is so so cool! Now you can upgrade to have all your electronic Wi-fi and plugged to one outlet so you don't have all those wires coming out of the sockets.

I have just recently acquired my prosperity consciousness. It's a great ride on that state. I'm waiting to see the next man I am going to be.

  24. Randy, this is a fabulous topic! Sometimes I feel guilty about spending money on "splurges". It's a habit from when I couldn't afford to pay essentials such as the heating bill: it's the method I developed to train myself to not spend money on "nonessential" items.

If I find I'm donating to charity far beyond my monthly church tithe while buying nothing for myself, I take it as a signal that I feel guilty about spending money on myself. Then I change to "one extra dollar for charity, one dollar spent on my splurges".... it's helpful in spotting a meme such as "other people deserve good things faster than I do".

One inexpensive way I honor myself is making sure my glasses and the bathroom mirror are spot-free. Rewards include: buying my favorite songs as mp3's, getting massages, buying pleasure reading, attending live theater events & comedy club. Like Jeanne, I find it harder to take time off (conducting no work, regardless if at home or on a vacation) than to spend money on myself.

I love Mrs.HealthAndProsperity's question: "SHOULD self-indulgences challenge the budget?" Randy, I would love for you to dig deeper into that concept!  --Lynn Selwa

  27. Randy I liked this post.  I think when it comes to valuing ourselves we should consider all kinds of things. For me I am going to value you myself more by making better choices and being more self disciplined.  I had a helicopter parent and I didn't learn very well the fine art of decision making.  I have made major life choices without much consideration.  So after may "Oh My God! moments I am trying something new.

While I was shelving at the library I came across a book titled "How We Decide", by Jonah Lehrer.  It is less of a self-help book and more of a lesson on the neuroscience behind decision making.

Anyway, regarding the "death wish" comment from yesterday, I am still concerned about you.  You mentioned bathtub and electrical outlets in the same post.  Water and electricity don't mix.  Putting them together may cause death.  Psychoanalytically speaking, you are treading on thin ice. 🙂

  32. I still struggle with this valuing myself. Some friends splurge on food, spending hundreds on food alone. But to me food is food, just to fill my stomach.  I spent $5 or $100 on food, it will all comes out the same in the end.

    22. Hi Randy,
I have just recently acquired my prosperity consciousness.
