Tribal Prosperity

Posted By: Randy GageDecember 15, 2008

Got some interesting comments on the post about Seth Godin’s new book “Tribes.”   I was particularly intrigued by the questions there and in the follow up e-book Marcos posted on how leading tribes factored into making money.

As a prosperity coach and long-time student of marketing, I certainly bring some bias to the table.  If you look at my original comments, I recommended the book for everyone that wants to make money in business.

That’s because the best business ideas are the ones that resonate within the marketplace, create passion, and attract followers.  When  you see the people in line for their half-decaf, mocha-froth, carmelata-frittata frapaccinos at Starbucks, or survey the people browsing around in the Apple superstores, or mesmerized by a performance of Cirque du Soleil -  you see they are passionate advocates of the product they are buying. They’re believers in what they buy and want to share their experience with everyone they know.  They move from customers to a marketing team more powerful than any amount of money can buy.  When your business ventures inspire a tribe, it can make you rich.

Go to a Viper Owners Invitational hosted by Chrysler and just watch all the key chains, jackets, models and other gee-gaws the attendees buy.  Go into the Cirque store after a performance and see how fast people are snapping up $125 t-shirts.

As a member of both these tribes, I can attest to the aftereffect.  I have my Viper caps, racing jackets, polo shirts, custom floor mats, gearshift knobs, replica models, and can even drink my Dr. Pepper (another tribe I belong to) from my engraved Viper coffee mugs or engraved glasses, set on my Viper logo coasters.  (No I am not kidding.)

I could stock a small boutique with all the Cirque clothes I’ve got, and I have the program, CD, and DVDs for every show I’ve seen.  We buy these things because we want to take a little piece of the show home with us, and relive it from time to time.

Now this is not to say you should start a tribe just to make money.  Prosperity doesn’t work that way.  True lasting prosperity is created by creating value for the universe.  And the more value you create, the more prosperity you will attract.

Certainly there are tribes started by people to save the environment, protect children, help people with addictions and many other worthy causes not built on the profit model.  But the same principles apply, and in most cases, these efforts need to attract money and supporters to continue the cause.

If you come from good motivations, you will attract people to what you do, and they will bring their money, time and other support. The greatest jobs and businesses to have are the ones you are passionate about.  The same is true for the causes you support.  Both of these cases call out for you to lead a tribe. It just makes sense that you find a business that you strongly believe in and produce such a remarkable value, that you attract a tribe.  And when you do that, prosperity is the natural result. -RG

  1. Hey Randy-
I saw a great documentary this weekend called; The Age of Believing. It was all about Walt Disney. Being halfway through the book Tribes, I could see that he was an absolute master of this.

I highly recommend watching it. It's on TCM for the next two sundays.

Disney's primary passion was telling stories that moved people. It was the driving force for everything he did. In the documentary they even mention that he never did anything for the money and never thought he had done enough.

He was a hero of mine as a kid and today I have one of his quotes on my business card.

I loved learning more about his thought process, his drive and his creations with the insights (so far) from the book Tribes fresh in my mind. It made both the documentary and the book become more insightful.

Good stuff. Thanks for the recommendation.

PS. My 17 year old daughter is definately a part of the Tinkerbell tribe:)
...she is getting some kind of "Princess" DVD for at least four of the eight days of Hannukah. We're making sure she has her personal collection complete to take with her to college next year:)!

  2. I just saw your re-post of this on Triiibes (you a member there too?) and had to leave a comment for you. What great analagies you use and make the point perfectly.

I'm trying to figure out how to make my triiibe passionate about my business (insurance - property & casualty) which tends to be a non-passionate, uninspiring type business.

    Thanks, Randy.
