Time Management

Posted By: Randy GageJune 14, 2012

I just finished the Prosperity TV episode for next week where we’ll explore your “success handicap.”  By that I mean the tax you may be placing on yourself, by sleeping and starting later than your competitors do.

As a general rule, successful people work harder than others.  They simply work more hours.  But they also do something else…

They manage their time differently.  They make choices, which sometimes means making sacrifices.  Because this much is certain:

If you want to reach a high level of success, there will be many things you will have to eliminate from your life.

Some of those things are simple distractions.  Some are pleasant diversions.  And some are activities you actually love and want to keep doing – but you will make a conscious choice to sacrifice them in deference to the main purpose in your life.  You give up some things you want, to attain the things you really want.

It’s all about the choices you make and the priorities you set.  So how are you doing on that?

Do you have a clear purpose in your life.  Do you manage your time well and take care of priorities – or do you go for instant gratification – or let distractions take you off course?

Please share your thoughts below.  And next post I want to discuss how this applies in other areas of your life.

  1. I used to think the rich worked way longer than normal people until I read Donald Trumps book "How to Become Rich".  He spends 3 hours a day reading, doesn't drink, and works a pretty normal schedule from 9 to 6 like most.  But he does delegate lots of his meaningless tasks.  I think most of the things we do on a daily basis that move us towards what we want will not show up for many months or years - the compound effect.  Successful people just know what they want and move their actions towards that with their time.  Unsuccessful people waste their time working low paying jobs, or no pursuing things that will ever lead them out of the rut.

    1.  @HomebizTrainer I think the results and the quality of the time matter more than the time put in.It's better to have one highly focused hour or two than several hours of multi-tasking.Almost all of us can outsource things, or use tools to make things easier. In the past, you did practically need a large amount of money and lots of people to accomplish things. While it depends on what you do, it is now possible to do a lot yourself or with small groups, often for little or sometimes no money, thanks to technology. One person can be their own multi-national corporation.

  3. Personally since we're in development stages of our media projects, I go with the flow. And yes, I'm guilty of taking distractions but as we move forward there will be no time for them when in production. With a loose schedule now, I probably take more liberties than I could but I'm not going to beat myself up about it either. I live my life with purpose and vision rather than doing what's familiar. And the slogan of the company is "Entertainment with Purpose", so as you can imagine, everything is purpose driven. Without purpose, life is empty and meaningless.

In addition, I think it's very important to put our own personal happiness above everything else. And we all have different things that bring us this happiness. Your thoughts Randy?

  6. What you say makes sense, Randy.  As we always have heard, people don't plan to fail, they just fail to plan.  I'll add to that they fail to FOLLOW their plan, and I plead guilty to that last charge.

  8. This is great and also something that's super easy to distort for those seeking another unconscious / invisible / deniable way to abuse themselves - as workaholics. Not taking time to get enough sleep, eat well, invest in important (healthy) relationships...all these lead to the chaos and crisis that prevent success but actually feel useful in the moment. Busy is not the same as productive, and working harder will not be the answer unless you are really willing to do the personal development of self discovery alongside that.

  10. Millionaires do things non-millionaires don't do. There are many wealthy people balance their life with work, family, fun etc. However, they invest their time wisely. Nowadays there are so much distraction the keep us away from doing the real stuff. A 20 mins google search can become 2 hours of surfing useless information. It's more than just managing time, it's about discipline!
