The Yin and Yang of Life

Posted By: Randy GageJune 7, 2011

Perhaps all the dragons of our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us once beautiful and brave.

Those words from poet Rainer Maria Rilke can lead you to experiencing the greatest joys in life.  She suggests our deepest fears are like dragons guarding our deepest treasures.

What a special day it was…

A storm was off the coast, and the whitecaps were crashing on the shore as I woke.  Rain was pelting my windows, washing off the salty spray the ocean air normally leaves on there.  The wind was bending the palm trees, and I was watching for waterspouts.  It was a spiritual experience.

One I probably couldn't appreciate if it was that way every day.  I think the sunshine the previous day made me enjoy the rain that much more.  Just as the rain lets us appreciate the sunny days more.

Sunny is not "good" and rainy "bad."  They just are.  And we need and must appreciate both.  So we have to suspend our judgments of good and bad and just accept the ever-changing flow of life.  It's all good.

So live today!

  1. Right on Randy!! Appreciate it all and acknowledge the beauty.

Living here in Naples, FL - it's such a beautiful place it would be easy to become complacent and not take time to "smell the roses" but I am thankful and appreciate living here every day.

  2. FYI - Rainer Maria Rilke is a male. Thanks for the brain tickle (I had to Google it to make sure) . . . Cheers

  3. People think I'm crazy living here in VT. We have snow storms, rain storms that last for weeks and cold that goes right to the bone. But I tell ya, everyone here recognizes just how special a beautiful sunset is and we all savor a snow day like a fine wine.

    Thanks as always Randy!

  4. Very well conveyed Randy.

Just as we experience hardships in our lives, this is what makes the good days great. I embrace the tough times and the pains in life just as I embrace the good times. This is what life is all about, absorb every drop while you can.

  5. Guess what Randy? It's middle of winter here in South Africa & today of all days it's raining. We're not accustomed to this & to top it all off I have a very important appointment with an influencial prospect. I love this weather. It is a signal of abundant blessings... Thanks for your enligtenment Mr. Gage

  6. Randy todas tus palabras son siempre positivas y constructivas!...El tiempo, los cambios climáticos no son impedimento para nuestro crecimiento, para nuestra evolución...Muchas gracias

  7. Ok. I particularly like the sunny days. I do not like rainy days but I know it is very necessary for life. However, I will put in practice what you say. Let's not prejudge between "good" and "bad", events that are just experiences. Thank you very much. Very good advice. Gabriel
PS: At this time we are covered with volcanic ash, the sky is completely gray, then a volcano erupted on Sunday in the Andes. Ash came to the Atlantic coast. Let's wait to enjoy the sunny day that will come after the ash go!

  8. Thanks Randy. So simple and so True. Love "Suspend our Judgements". Good stuff. I received some great advice on this; "To be Happy, ALL I have to do is give up my judgements". Dam, I think Im gonna tweet that. Love this blog and title.
    Thanks again Randy !

  9. Love the concept of one-ness. This post reminds me of the adage that if you just another, you judge yourself. There is nothing to judge, it just is, and if you don't like what you see, choose to manifest something different in its place.

  10. When we "suspend our Judgements" we have more time to appreciate the magnificence of our existence. Sight, taste, hearing, feelings and senses are more acute.

I love the rain! It feels like a rebirth, a cleansing. The birds, animals , trees get their nourishment and the streets of NYC are cleaner. Well, The Sun, it keeps me in awe of it all.

This is one set of duality (sun/rain) I definitely appreciate!

Have a Sunny or Rainy day,
    Leslie

  11. This is sooooo true as without a balancing element for all things in life, everything would go haywire.

Were there no evil to balance good, what would happen? No up for down.. in for out.. fear for love.. How would life be? I wonder.

And as we all know, how we view life is how it shows up. So let's just view ALL of it as essential and amazing, shall we?

Thanks Randy for the constant reminders 🙂

  12. What if our blessings come through raindrops
What if our healing comes through tears.
What if a thousand sleepless nights is what it takes to know you're near.
What if trials of this life, are our mercies in disquise.

The words to this song seem appropriate to me here. They are from Laura's story, called Blessings. Beautiful song.

  13. Little wonder that someone has asked if you were Chinese, Randy!

I am reminded of that Taoist (or Zen) story about the farmer who greeted all news with "maybe, maybe not", whether the news was considered good or bad:

    http://www.katinkahesselink.net/tibet/zen.html

It was liberating for me when I started looking at events as neutral, neither good nor bad.

And of course the wise words of Epictetus also come to mind:

"We cannot choose our external circumstances, but we can always choose how we respond to them."

And I especially like the idea of standing back and watching and appreciating that storm with awe and wonder!
