The Wonder of Life

Posted By: Randy GageOctober 24, 2010

Have you ever wondered what makes little kids so happy?  They will laugh for no apparent reason at all.

Ever see a dog riding along in a car, with his face out the window, luxuriating in the breeze?  Life is good!  Or a cat, who finds that spot on the rug where the sunshine is coming through the window.  Life is very good!

Isn’t it great when the salad bar has fresh crunchy green peppers?  Or you get that perfect ripe watermelon?

I’m so glad Frank Sinatra recorded “My Way.”  And that David Gates and Bread did “Baby I’m a Want You,” The Guess Who did “Share the Land,” Pink Floyd did “Comfortably Numb,” and The Sweet did “Ballroom Blitz.”

I appreciate the smell of fresh cut grass, leaves burning, and CK for men.  I love the sounds of waves crashing on the shore in Hawaii, the street clatter of Rue St. Honoree in Paris, and the mélange of languages at any sidewalk café in South Beach.

I appreciate friendly flight attendants, fresh mangos from a backyard tree, and every wrinkle that is starting to show on my face.

Every time I fire up my Viper, I love the sound of that engine.  I still get breathless every time I step into a ballpark and see a perfectly manicured baseball field.  And every time I get on an airplane, I am in wonder that those big heavy things can fly.

What about you?

What do you have wonder about?  And what are the wonders of life, that bring joy to your life?

  1. RG - I very much appreciate you & all that you do - & i am looking forward to meeting you in person at your social networking event in Fort Lauderdale.

    Thank YOU!

  2. I get that feeling when I am sitting in an air plane which is about to lift, or when I think of my future in the business I'm in, or when I look at my daughter and realize what a perfect little woman she is, or when I stand and look out to the endless sea. I also feel very happy when you give me new and inspiring thoughts which takes me far away from my own limits!
    Thanks!

  3. Hi Randy,
My weekend has been filled with wonder & delight! My dog is training to be a support dog with a local organization. I’m filled with so much joy just thinking about the lives we will touch. And watching these cute dogs in class, all different shapes and sizes, they always bring a smile to my face. My neighbors have a 1½ year old son who is beautiful. Watching the world through his eyes is quite a treat. He is excited about everything and wants to talk to everyone he meets! And my church, I am so inspired and uplifted every Sunday! I feel blessed to have found you on YouTube and love how you challenge me, and expand my thinking. Music & candy make me happy too!

  4. Oh Randy, don't get me started

    Early morning dew on flowers.
The tail of a whale as he slides under the waves.
    The smile of a dolphin
The night sky encrusted with stars
The thrill of visiting a new country
Church bells on a Sunday morning

    That'll do for now
    Jean

  5. I come alive when I step into a casino and hear the magical sound of poker chips. I have experienced the terrifying acceleration of being in a twin turbo, 1500 horse power big block chevy street car. I've ridden a motorcycle at 150mph...on 1 wheel. I've gone 200 MPH on motorcycles more times than I care to count. I love the rumble of insane, high performance cars. I love cruising on a cool, clear night in a 600hp street car with the stereo blasting.

I am in wonder that one day I stepped into a Dojo, and it changed my life forever. I am in wonder that one day I set foot in a gym, and it changed my life forever. I am in wonder that one day I said yes to our profession, and it changed my life forever. I am in wonder of what the next "one day" will be. I celebrate the challenges that have shaped me.

I love that Elton John sat down at a piano. Stevie picked up a guitar. That Ozzy fathered heavy metal. That Slayer, Metallica, Anthrax and Megadeth were listening when he did.

I love the high of finishing a workout when you are in incredible physical condition. there is no drug that can come close to that. I've been sky diving, and scuba diving. I too, stare out the window in amazement everytime I fly. I am in wonder that I used to be afraid of planes. I love to fly.

I am in wonder of wonderful friends and mentors like you, Randy, who have taught me to do more, have more and become more. I love the challenge, and purpose pursuing that brings. Thoreau said "man cannot dream himself into a character, he must hammer and forge himself one". Thanks for providing some of that fire -TS

  6. AHHH. I love this!.

Tonight after a moonlight walk around our neighborhood pond, Will and I laid down in the grass at the bottom of our steps and just looked up at the stars. Like kids we enjoyed the cool grass, clear night, a frog, the warm breeze and one very bright planet that kept sparkling in the sky.

Space boggles my mind!! And...I am amazed that after 20 years of living together Will and I still laugh like kids, retain our a sense of adventure and really like being around each other. How is it possible to enjoy someone even more as years pass by?

Lastly, (for this moment) I am in absolute awe of humans ability to make music. It's universal, magical and awe-some to me, and all kinds of music can bring me to to tears or cause me to dance around in my living room.

I am grateful every morning that I dream in color and every night for another full day of life and all her wonders.
    Thanks,
    Jeanne

  7. Ahhhhh....so many things to feel joy about that I won't go into them all. I just want to share one for now.
Imagine....it is 5:00 AM on a winters' morning. A fresh snow has fallen silently in the night. I don my favorite Sorel boots, coat, hat and gloves and step out of the door to clear the walk and steps for those who will come by throughout the day. They won't have the pleasure of being the first to see the beauty of white blanketing the world ... untouched ... street lights shedding their glow down onto what appears to be billions of tiny diamonds sprinkled liberally upon the ground. I smile as I survey the view before beginning my task. The silence is broken only by the scrape of the shovel as I let my mind drift to God and say "Thanks for sharing this with me!". Ahhh...what a way to begin a new day.

  8. I'm grateful for my computer where I receive this great blog, a shout out to my bros and sisters! great too that it gives me great songs and music at youtube.com
Grateful for PBS, great series like Ken Burns' national parks... gotta go!! concerts and culture!! And great investigative pieces that keeps people honest and make you realize how lucky we are!!
And finally being a foodie, I love when you got that nice mellow glow in your tummy, then you know you've eaten well...

  9. Listening to the sound of my kids' laughter!

Reading books, comments, posts, quotes from wordsmiths, particularly humerous ones.

Enjoying the rich flavour of dark chocolate melting on my tonge. Or that amazing chocolate orange ice-cream I had in Nice. And numerous other wonderful culinary experiences.

Feeling the excitement (the jumping up and down doing air punches type) when I get a referral I have worked hard towards achieving, positive feedback on my work or signs my business is moving to the next level.

Watching a magnificent live show with superb acting.

Driving in my car on a sunny day at a docile 100 km/h (*smiling at Tom Schulte*) along the freeway or open country road singing loudly to my fave music.

  10. Wow, I am in awe that I have two 20 something adult children that still want to do things with me; especially travel with me when they have down time to marvelous places like Montreal, Panama City, Philadelphia, etc... This time I get to act with a childlike twinkle in my eye enjoying the adventures of travel with each one.

I love that my papi took me to old Yankee Stadium as a little girl, and introduce me to the eighth wonder of this world-Baseball.

I love that I always choose to wake up with a smile on my face, and
lastly, I am thrill that I have this unconditional love for humanity.

Thanks Randy, and Ol' Blue Eyes.

  11. Wonders in my life
My 34 acres of property with all its greenery and wildlife. Rabbits, Deer, and the neighbour's cat.
My Ellsworth Joker which must be the best mountian bike ever built.
Sitting around the campfire after a ride in the forest with my friends.
Having a really great wightlifting workout. Feeling the blood rush to the muscles as they are being worked.
Coming up with a cream or lotion my customers just can't be without.
Figuring out how to rustproof a car's exhaust system.
My 81 grand prix ,which I built, myself, into a musclecar. That thing can fly! But I kept the exhaust quiet to avoid extra attention from the men in blue.
Satellite radio in my new F150
The peacefullness of a forest when I'm mountain biking.
Landing a 3 foot drop with buttery smoothness.
Negotiating tough terrain as my bike's suspension soaks it all up.
The moment I figured out my ultimate rustproofing oil.
    Learning how to dirt jump.
The caring kiss of a beautiful woman.
Learning to build and do things myself.
Going back to Hungary and Yugoslavia on holidays.

  12. Randy, you have a gift of expressing what we naturally, indescribably and instinctively feel to the core of our being - to our soul, mind, and heart, as we breathe and observe the wonder of life, which I'm normally unable to put in words in most cases because I'm more visual than verbal. I seem to be very gifted in expressing how I feel when I appreciate the nature and the wonder of life into thoughts, arts, and music, instead of verbally expressing them. Because of my inability to express how I feel at times and most of the times, although I seem to be gifted to feel, perceive, catching the spirit of God moving, how I wish to ask you to become a verbal interpreter for me so that you could convey thru the verbal communications as to how I feel and what I think to people whom I run into in my life. I feel and sense things without putting them into words and I tend to be just quiet, not pursuing far enough to equally convey my inner message (or how I feel or what I think) to the world and at the right time. When I read such artistic and deep insightful, as well as spiritual writing, I get touched to my senses and am forced to move up to a higher degree of spirituality. I always wanted to run into someone like you who is spiritual with a gift of artistic mind / expression in words and writing. Thanks for sharing. God bless.

  13. It is hard to look at life when you haven´t fogiven people and things in the past.I red something that helped me a lot and I want to share it here;

"What you cannot make consious in yourself becomes your fate".

When I heard these words, I suddenly could forgive everything. Why?

I realised that people in my past had come to me as saviours, ready to show me things I myself couldn´t see IN MYSELF.And my whole life became so different from that view!
I really look at life in the way you describe now, and nothing from the past is disturbing me anymore. Why is it sometimes so easy and we look at it as too complicated?

  14. My wonder of life is that I'm surrounded with so many wonderful people, f.e. like you Randy, who give me such inspirational blogs, vids, audio's day-after-day-after day-after-day.

  15. I wonder at how God can take two microscopic molecules, one called a woman's egg and the other a man's sperm, join them together and form the extreme complexity called human life. Every time I see a newborn baby, I am amazed at how His plan is so perfect!

  16. That a bunch of people can work together and create a useful product; watching my 2 year old niece and her absolute fascination with worms, snakes, the moon, my ducted heating and my fridge; the smell of jasmine flowers in spring; watching bees pollinating flowers and gathering nectar; the invention of surround sound and watching an action movie at high volume; the sound of my turbo spooling; inventions like remote controlled garage doors and dishwashers that make my life easier; eating deliciously sweet, seasonal fruit (definitely mangoes!); a warm breeze and the sound of cicadas on a summer night and sleeping with the windows open; that sex can be so mind-blowing; watching a ballet or a couple of world-class Latin dancers; the Internet.

  17. Every morning I take a long walk along a stream on my way to work.

This morning as I walked the sun begin to rise and colored the sky pink and babyblue. The hoarfrost from the night glimmered and the cold was nipping my nose. The leaves have fallen and are covering the ground in its remarkable colors.

I start my day like this, in total amazement of the beauty of nature. I greet those I meet with a smile, because I am happy to be alive and be able to see this.

    Love Åsa

  18. I appreciate the technology to tweet the link of your blog. Thanks for your thoughts every day. Who's your favorite for the World Series San Francisco or Texas?

  19. Laying in my Hamcock in the Bahamas. Bike Riding thru a bike trail. Jogging earlier in the morning when the sun is about to come up. Relaxing in My Jacuzzi listening to Jazz. Jumping out of a plane with a parachute and floating thru the air.

  20. My car broke down an hour ago. Kind service people all around - towing my car, taking car of it tomorrow morning, driving me to the Hotel for dinner. Now sitting there with a glass of good wine. Feeling blessed. And curious. What inspiration will fill this unexpected waiting time the next hour until dinner? You never know 😉

  21. Snuggling with Barry on the couch... having our 2-year-old bring me something he wants to share with me... having a cat curl up on my lap... seeing a double rainbow in the bright blue sky... beautiful mountains... feeling the breeze and hearing the waves on the beach...

Ballroom Blitz is a good one, too! I think I'll add that to my Facebook video series! 😉

  22. 4 things:
    - Watching my kids laugh in their sleep
    - Fresh cut grass on a football field
    - The smell of a new car
    - The adrenaline you get watching the Giants torture (you'll know what I mean if you live in NorCal).
I called it here before the NLCS... Giants in 6. Now for the WS.... Giants in 7.
    RJ

  23. At the top of my list is love. I was in love twice in my life and I don't know that there is a feeling that ever tops that one. Can't wait to experience it again.
Hiking in the fall in New England while smelling the wood burning fireplaces in the air.
Laying flat on my back in an aqua ocean smooth as glass.
The smile a child gives you as you smile at them.
The look on a dog's face you have just saved him from the pound.
The impact a smile has when given to someone who appears miserable.
The sun shining through the stain glass in a church.
The feeling of peace inside me.
    Opera goose bumps
    Snow falling
Hitting 100 mph in the convertible while playing "danger zone" by Kenny Loggins

  24. Waking up every morning, feeling great, and thankful for the day ahead of me. Anxious to see what unfolds and to try to improve my life on a daily basis.
Couldn't even start to list the many things I enjoy, as every aspect of life is beautiful and filled with challenges.

  25. I go about my day finding joy, and beauty is my drug.

I am in awe with the way a grove of 50 ft bamboos sway & dance to the sensual rhythm of the storm, with the sky losing its temper in the backdrop; it delights me to see a smile that starts at the corners of someone's eyes spread to the stretch of their lips; and everyday i fall under the spell of the how the water in my pool submits to the whim of the visiting breeze - sparkling in the sun, or moody on a cloud-filled day.

I am grateful watching how animated my 84-year old grandma is when she describes how she conquered the cold in Switzerland; amused watching a dog chasing its own tail; dissolved into tears reading heartfelt writing straight from the soul; touched seeing an old couple holding each other up crossing a busy street; empowered witnessing the power of the human spirit to overcome all obstacles; humbled to be a part of nature and all its miracles.

I give thanks that this list shall never end...

Grateful, so damn grateful, to be alive & given the absolute choice to vote how every day shall be and why my being alive is making a difference.

    Sending love. xoxo

  26. Spellbound when seeing two frogs mating, suddenly being aware of this sparkling bluey/turquoise light emanating from them and flowing upwards.... I could swear that I saw new life being made right before my very eyes.

BTW I am not a voyeur of frog's sex lives LOL

  27. I love the feeling of the morning sun. I look at my little flower garden (which looks pretty wonderful being planted by a house plant serial killer) the bees hovering around the flowers. If we don't feel wonder at all the small things happening around us we'll never appreciate the big things. Thanks for the reminder.

  28. I love to take a good nap, I like a nice ride, speed and thrill.
I like a nice meal when I come home from work or after excercising.
And I like those special obstacles that sometimes seem somehow impossible, only to realize, after you overcome them, that there are more challenges along the way.

  29. wow. love this post.
the wonders of life i appreciate most.
my little girl. watching her grow from an adorable little baby into a beautiful young woman.
palm trees. i'm not sure why, but i love em.
    76 degree weather.
the ocean on a clear sunny day.
submerging myself in a body of water.
pdf files, and the smartphone i use to read them on.
the euphoric feeling i have after i do 45 minutes of cardio in the gym, then i sit down and drink a sugar-free monster.
a good beat i can dance to.
    having fans when i dance.
    intimacy.

thats my short list. thanks for letting me play.

  30. Thank you Randy
For reminding us to be grateful and to live lives of wonder. Every night I crawl into my tempur pedic bed with 1000 thread count sheets and am in awe of how blessed I am and very thankful. There are those who sleep on the floor. Every morning I relish the freshness and beauty of another sunrise and am thankful that I am alive to see it. I have recently buried 5 friends. I never get tired of "doing" for my 4 sons and know how incredibly blessed I am to have them by my side. Others are not so fortunate.
Every minute is an opportunity and precious.

  31. I wonder at how they built the Milau viaduct in France.

They could have built something a lot more mundane, but they chose to build one of the greatest feats of modern engineering. That's what greatness is all about!

  32. It's a wonder to look into the mirror after a long tough workout. Not being conceited, just happy to see results of hard work. And also wonder about the sound of wind when sitting in the park.

I start my day like this, in total amazement of the beauty of nature. I greet those I meet with a smile, because I am happy to be alive and be able to see this.
