The Vision that Pulls You to Greatness

Posted By: Randy GageFebruary 4, 2011

So for the last couple posts we’ve looked at what makes you great.  I said when you change your actions, you make incremental changes.  But when you change your thinking, that’s when everything changes.

Because all great accomplishments are created twice: first mentally and then physically.

As we explored yesterday, you don’t become great when you accomplish a result.  You become great when you make the daily choices to do the things you know you should do.  But what makes you do them?

Your vision of what could be.

And this vision must be so compelling, so sexy, so real that it pulls you toward it.  That’s what gets you into the gym, out of bed in the morning, making those extra calls, doing the extra project, challenging yourself.

And vision isn’t just woo-woo stuff…

There is research on the brain’s pre-frontal cortex that demonstrates that when you consistently envision something, you actually increase your brain’s ability to create compelling visions for yourself.  The really fascinating thing is that the neurons you use to create your vision are the same ones that fire when you act on that vision.

Ain’t it great!

  1. THIS IS SOOOOOOOO GREAT! THANK YOU! It's a knowing I own and a daily intention, but you deliver it with such well, delivery, that I just FEEL the support, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! It is how I seek 2 b every day....daily daily work.....some of the hardest in my life......and expecting it to be the most worthwhile.........and my brother Jonathan, one of your BIG advocates, is really who gets the THANKS first.........always

  2. Randy, Theses last couple posts have been incredible. Thank you very much. I look forward to your blog every time it comes up. It get's me in the right mind set to get the rest of my mind going.

  3. Randy, Theses last couple posts have been incredible. Thank you very much. I look forward to your blog every time it comes up. It get's me in the right mind set to get the rest of my day going.

  4. It is great! I was just writing on the effects that positive thoughts have on the body and it's un-disputable that the quality of our thoughts is directly connected to the the quality of our reality.

It's not only in the area of abundance, but in all areas of our life. Thank you for persistently getting the word out!

  5. I sought my soul and the soul I could not see, I sought my God and God eluded me, I sought my brother and found all three.

My dad had that psalm in a frame on our bookshelf. I don't think that means we forget about ourself. I think it means when we love ourselves enough to extend our love to others we will feel wholeness and greatness. Is there anything greater than love? Is their any person greater than the one who gives love freely?

What is a person who achieves great things, but is not a great person? It is definitly possible to be both, but it is very important not to lose sight of true greatness.

Greatness from within may not always be rewared from without, but knowing you are truly great is all the reward needed.

I like your post Randy, I know your goal here is to teach others to achieve their dreams, and you do that really well. You inspire me as well. Just wanted to give my perspective.

    1. Here is the question for you, dear Randy and all the readers. What do you do when you can't really feel happy when you create your vision? I'm working on my vision now, and sometimes I feel that I miss a piece. I don't feel really happy, excited about it. Then I go ahead and change some things. I try to find what I really want to have in my life and who I want to be. Still, hard to get to the piont of excitement, when you say "YES, this IS what I want!"/ I used to have it before. I used to have dreams and get excited when I set my goals andmy vision. But now, the JOY is missing somehow. Any thought on that? Many thanks in advance!

      1. No joy, no excitement, so the vision is not compelling. Even though I try to put in the thnings that might make me happy.

        1. That's to bad. I'm sorry you don't find joy in your vision. You know the answer, it is within you, just be patient it will come.

      2. "What do you do when you can’t really feel happy when you create your vision?"

Rishkin, my guess is that either your vision isn't what YOU really want (it might be what society says you should want, or your parents say you should want, etc.); or your vision is what you truly want, but you don't believe that you can ever achieve it and so you feel discouraged.

If it's the first, you need to develop your own vision, not the vision that other people tell you you SHOULD want.

The second possibility is tougher. If you know what you truly want but you don't believe you can ever achieve it, maybe you can develop a "smaller", more achievable vision, one that you can feel happy about. Then, after you begin to achieve successes in that direction, you can return to your original vision with a more optimistic belief that it just might be achievable.

        Hope this helps. Dream on!
        jim

        1. That was my first thought too...who's vision are you creating? Many people create a vision for themselves that, at the core, is not really what they want. Maybe it's something that others around them expect or want for them. Rishkin, you need to dig deep and think about what it is that YOU really want. And it needs to be something huge.... something that maybe makes you a little nervous but gets your heart racing at the thought of having or accomplishing it. Then you'll be excited about your vision!

      3. Thank you so much for your answers and warm words, people! I appreciate it very much.

I do know that there are still some issues with self-esteem that keep me back from creating a compelling vivison. I have been thinking about it for a few days after posting my question. Your answers resonated with my own insights. In addtion, Ifound one more core porblem inside me that is a real, huge obstacle. I would call it a fear. I'll work on that, I promise.

        Thank you very much again!

      4. I hear you Rishkin. I wondered the same myself. When I was younger I could get so excited with my vision as I got older the excitement happened less and less each time. When I achieved my vision the joy was there and transferring that excitement onto the next vision took a lot of work.

Yesterday in the shower I had a thought come to me about this very topic, before I even read Randy's blog here. I remembered when I was in high school, I was not a good student, had no interest in studying, I would rather hang out with my friends. My last year of school I decided to buckle down and take school serious. I did really really well, aced some of my exams. Then I got sick, I crashed, so disappointed and the self-desecrating thoughts began. "Look at what happens when I achieve success, I get sick.", "What's the sense in trying then?, I just get sick". Then I went to the office seeking for help. The guidance counselor assigned to me was the most horrible person, unfortunately I believed what she had to say. I expressed my frustration, when I said that how well I did in my studies she said.... 'You were just lucky, don't expect to do that well all the time'. She just cemented and validated all that destructive self-talk I had been doing to myself. I QUIT school.

Wow, thank you to the Universe for bringing to me WHY I don't pursue anything. I just couldn't figure out why I had no vision, no excitement about a future of abundance, since I didn't believe there was a future.

Thank you Randy for this post and cementing the fact that I CAN overcome this negative programming given time and practice.

        1. Dear Deb -

thank you for sharing your story. I wish you all the best on your way to the real vision, excitiment and success. You can do that. We all can.

        1. It was the messages I received from the adults in my life, one really sticks out, this from my Mom. 'Don't get too happy, it never works out'. Over time my belief became less and less in myself.

Then the criticism of my Dad, he was a dreamer and the message I got was it's bad to dream. When we would sit with nothing to do Mom got us busy doing something. She didn't like idleness.

        2. Another example of me giving into those false beliefs....

I went back to school taking computer classes (this was just before I turned 40), my Mom was my biggest supporter. I was doing great, passing all the exams, I was on top of the world. Then Mom passed away suddenly....I just couldn't go back to my studies right away, I took 3 months off trying to sort my thoughts and get the energy back to complete my courses. I finally did but I was so leary, and thinking 'what could possibly happen next?'.

  6. Randy,

I agree. It's your vision that pulls you and you should be extremely clear on what you want.

I am fascinated on how many times when creating a vision, the actual results is exactly as visioned.

    Thanks for sharing,

    Karen

  7. I also demand results, and build on those on to the next results.

People can get so caught up in their vision, faith, hope, belief etc. that nothing really ever happens, and they are still happy with that.

It doesn't matter if nothing happens now, because they are on clouds anyway some time in the future.

Well, just check the results in the meantime. You might need to make some changes!

  8. For those of us that use Wattles book, "The Science of Getting Rich" as our guide, we know full well that having a CLEAR mental picture (vision) and holding it in our mind with faith, purpose and gratitude along with taking action is the key. Even more importantly though is to hold the Thought (vision), in SPITE of all appearances. This can be challenging especially when we lose steam.

Wattles also says that when in doubt, fall BACK on our vision and purpose and above all, cultivate the Attitude of Gratitude.

So yes, having our vision, using a vision board and HOLDING to it, regardless of what does or doesn't happen makes Life a beautiful thing. We KNOW we will live our dream. We NEVER stop. Never, ever, ever!

    Thanks Randy.

  9. Hit it right on the head for me RG. Soon as my eyes are open I can't wait to get to the gym. Its been 6 weeks now and people are noticing, but more importantly, I'm noticing. I love working out now. My head starts spinning with ideas around my business in my country, its just awesome. I feel strong and inspired and my body at 45 is shaping like it never ever did before. So much energy and it absolutely assist's me in keeping my vision strong and real. And I'm even adding to the vision!

  10. Dear Randy!
Yes that is great. And I just realized that this is what we do as a child, great to get that back. As you grow up you are told to stop "daydreaming", and often that way of thinking is "killed" that way. Love this.
    Lene

  11. RG,
I think this is very important. This has been my hinderance for a long time, not having a clear vision. The funny thing is.........everyone told me i needed one. and they also told me that i wont be successful until i had a vision. but you know what.....i still didnt get a vision. stupid right???? but i just watched your video on the youtube channel 'stop self sabotage' and i realise i didnt feel worthy, so why have a vison anyway. i think that was going on in the background of my mind and its true. I saw and still to a large degree see myself as inherently bad, but i realise its not the case. so i do have a vision now. and im working towards seeing myself in a better light. i always presented myself to the world as a good boy, but i knew my real self when nobody was watching, bad thoughts, jealous thoughts, hateful thoughts, naughty thoughts, and so im working out with myself sometimes the real reason for these 'bad' thoughts, whats really behind them and more importantly what effect its having on my worthiness conscious. and im refraining from things that make me feel like a bad person a fraud, so ive stop, atleast cut down on gossiping, judging and hating others, and p0rn and str1ppers and things like that. and im focused more on spending time with good people and taking carre of myself and exposing myself to good things, like positive videos, relaxation music and so on. and i feel happier, and ive started to attract little things to my life that are good. spent the best night tonight in like 5 years with a cute girl instead of in front of the computer with some bad p0rn movies. so i have to keep this up, i think my vision will keep me there on path, if i see it and connect with it everyday/
    -Dan

    1. chatting to this cute girl you know, and walking around the city. thats what i meant. i wasnt going to do or try anything else on a first date

  12. saw ur youtube video minimalism vs materialism. i love the suites in the emirates planes. my vision is to travel in that with my gf. btw, you were standing in Darling Harbour in Sydney and videoing that,I used to work a 10 min walk from there

  13. Yeah. I really need to work on my vision (Dan a can relate to a lot...but not all!... of your struggles). I'm reading "The brain that changes itself." Interesting!! Randy, can you give me any other sources for the research you mentioned?

I can think of a number of times in my life when I have achieved what I have pictured in my lift. The first notable example was accidental. While at uni, I had pictures on my wall of beautiful scenery around Australia. I later realised I had visited all those places. There was no intention there and it was some years after all the travel I'd done that I remembered those pictures. And it's about to happen again. Our kids were given a book "Are we there yet?" about a family that travels around Australia. My husband and I have read it about a thousand times to each of our three kids. We were in the middle of one of our planning sessions for our 3 month trip around Australia when one of the kids came up to with the book requesting it be read, and I realised it's all happening again.

It's great, but for me it happens rarely, and by accident. I need to be more intentional about it. But just like Dan, I need to work on my feelings of worthiness before some of my career and financial goals can be set, or I won't set great goals.

I heard Wayne Dyer say something like "you don't attract what you want, you attract who you are." It really hit me when he said that. I can see that I have smothered my capacity for greatness with that part of me that is fearful of what others think of me, hesitant, mediocre, indecisive etc. I can't wait to see how I go this year, given I have an increased awareness of how to change that, some new goals (is it compelling and sexy enough? I need to have a think about that) and have started work on developing some new thoughts and habits. Now I need to add the visual stuff to that mix.
