The Tribal Champion

Posted By: Randy GageDecember 18, 2008

We spoke a lot lately about tribes and the movements that drive them.  Certainly the election of Barak Obama was a wonderful demonstration of this phenomenon in action.  But there was actually a much better example in the campaign…

The Obama campaign did a masterful job, galvanizing support, attracting volunteers and raising money.  But it is important to note that he did so by promising people lots of goodies, and pandering to their entitlement mentality.  You can argue that McCain lost the election because he didn’t do as good a job promising free health care, mortgage payments and other entitlements as Obama did.

But want to see a real tribe of fervent followers?  Look no farther than the army assembled by Representative Ron Paul.  Never in U.S. history has a candidate ignored by the party bosses and media made such a dramatic impact, raised so much money and created such a powerful movement.  And here’s the important thing: Paul did it by taking stands that were very UNpopular, and not pandering to the herd’s desire for more free goodies.

He said the invasion in Iraq was a never-ending sinkhole when it was still popular.  He spoke out against the socialistic proposals for health care, education, and other things.  He railed against the bailout packages.

Along the way he raised millions of dollars in “Internet money bomb” days, put a book on the bestseller list, galvanized a legion of new followers to the political arena, and turned out thousands for live events.

I still get emails regularly from his campaign and they continue to build their constituency.  So for those of you studying how movements are made, take a good look at someone that did it the hard way.  Built upon principles that don’t pander to the herd, but call people to something higher.  His Campaign for Liberty is growing by the day, even in the face of all the goodies the Democrats and Republicans are promising the herd.  Stop by his webpage here.

Food for thought…

  1. I think they meant for McCain to win, but something went wrong... Some even blame it on the Hadron Collider... About Ron Paul I'm not so sure, and when are people going to vote for themselves for a change...???

  2. Per, you wrote: "when are people going to vote for themselves for a change?"

The moment people figured out they could vote themselves a "paycheck" (economic stimulus check), a doctor (socialized health care), etc they DID vote for themselves.

Sen. Obama campaign was very well run, especially online.

You could not even enter the BarakObama.com website without making a contribution/donation (technically you could by clicking the header, but most never figured that out).

After every action you took on the website (donating, filling out your name, etc) they immediately asked you to volunteer your time with the campaign.

They made it easy to get Obama gear. Easy to connect with other volunteers. Etc.

They did a great job of building an email list and communicating with their list (though after a while it seemed all they were doing was asking for "just $5 more.")

They made the website clean. Polished. Easy to navigate.

The website was a great example of creating a movement online.

I do believe they did mess up in "over exposing" Sen Obama.

Our society has a tendency to build people up, turn them into celebrities and then "tear them down." The moment one becomes "over exposed" (to avoid this I recommend 'bursts of leadership'), their impact seems to lessen.

A good example are Sen. Obama's "first side chats" via his website and YouTube. They've already lost their "luster" (and he hasn't even take office yet) and people are tuning out (see the YouTube hit rate from week to week).

Plus, in the first few videos, they went too low end and he ended up looking like a guy behind a make-shift presidential podium using a webcam.

The Obama campaign created a movement. They did a brilliant job online.

Ron Paul. I love his attitude. His guts. His stance. His willingness to stand for what he believes. To NOTaccept the populist stance of "It's better to be politically correct than political."

I believe if Ron Paul were younger, a bit taller, a bit sturdier built... he would've been much more a force to recon with. He was born outside the ideal "window" as Gladwell would say in "Outliers."

  3. I agree about Ron Paul- I think he's done a wonderful job. He's definitely put a pin in the bi-partisan balloons.

As for Obama, there is plenty of documentation about what he said and did not say, and I don't remember any real "promises to the herd" that were pandering. Maybe I'm just one of them, but saying he wants to heal some of the division in the country isn't a promise, it's an expressed desire.

Trying to get Universal Healthcare is not a "promise to the herd"; it's a healthcare policy that every other industrialized country has.

(Not that it works that well in those countries, but they also don't have the bankruptcies that we do).

Just tell me what these "promises to the herd" are, so I can be further educated by you and the herd that follows you and your promises.

    :-p

  4. Society is grossly underdeveloped and public technology is archaic in general... The reason is people give themselves up to a few who want to rule the world... We think we have the latest but we're not even near what could have been by now... Even the ones who rule the world would have been far better off if people really used their abilities... That's what's insane about it... It's ultimately a choice, but people tend to choose the road to self destruction...

  5. One thing you guys better not get me started on again is health care in the Communist and Socialist countries. Right now I am dealing (very poorly) with the issue of my friend Alexander in Russia. He worked for the government in the military arena and they had him working with nuclear materials. Now he's in a shit hole government hospital with radiation poisoning, has lost most of his sight, suffered a stroke last week, and can't afford all the medical care he needs and the benevolent big brother country isn't providing him.

  6. There is no entitlement ,mentality involved.
The Medical schools kick out half the freshman class which they rigorously select in the first place. They also select children of the wealthy donors over not so wealthy donors instead of creating a large medical doctor supply.
Also the medical industry damages congressional opponents and pays big money to congressmen who vote for their monopolistic laws.
It is MONOPOLY POWER which has limited healthcare here. That Monopoly Power must be destroyed to have free market healthcare.
With free market applied to healthcare there is no need for socialist healthcare. Just like when I was a child in the 50's and Dr.'s made house calls, office visits cost 2 silver dolars, and shots were a buck each.
There was no socialism in the Hospitals then. Now The Monopolists are ripping the pockets off all of us with their bought and paid for Congress, which pass laws to maintain their monopolies.
It is not entitlement mentality, it is restoring the Free Market.
    Kep the faith brothers!

  7. I too am intrigued by the Libertarian movement; however, I am also curious as to why Ayn Rand never embraced it. In every reference I've seen that she made to the Libertarian Party, she referred to it as a party of plagiarists (for stealing her idealogy without credit(?)). I do hope they gain traction; however, I am concerned that Americans do not have the attention span required to "untangle the Christmas lights" to see the cause/effect relationships that got us in the current mess that we are in today. As far as monopolies are concerned, the ONLY monopoly I am concerned about is the one that has the LEGAL right to use force - the Federal Government!

  8. Excellent commentary, David.

Regarding Ayn Rand and her hatred for/of the Libertarian Party, based on what I've read, that is true. Actually, the Objectivists, as a group, dislike Libertarians and (in my opinion) seem to manufacture reasons to do so. One audio I heard that was authored by an Objectivist claimed that the LP philosophy didn't "stand for anyting." That, of course, is so untrue it's almost laughable. The LP philosophy - as it's very creed - states that everyone has the right to live their own life in whatever way they see fit providing they don't infringe upon the rights of anyone else to do the same." Sounds to me like Libertarianism stands for something, and something very good!

Ayn Rand had very specific opinions on certain things (and, by the way, and for the record, I have a huge amount of respect for Ayn Rand and Objectivism) and - it almost seems - at least to me - that if one doesn't "fall in line" with every opionion, then that person must be a "collectivst." 🙂

So, I'm not sure if my response really answered your question. I've never felt as though Libertarians took her philosophy without credit or acknowledgement to her. As far as I can tell, Libertarians (and I am definitely one) see her as a main source of inspiration for our philosophy.

    Best regards,

    Bob

  9. Even though it's not a "conspiracy" blog: In order to rule this solar system you obviously have to be a step or two ahead of the game. That's what they even tell us in the gap on the Dollar Bill Pyramid. They can't allow anyone to even come close to them! Talk about an example of success in leading a tribe! They are the ones behind the scenes who manipulate certain people to the White House etc. They know physical reality is an illusion, or a "holographic idea" to start with, and looking at how people view themselves today it's really a piece of cake for a few to control the many. It's not just to be aware of this, but to act on who you really are!

  10. "Obama - they don't want him to be seen only as 'the Messiah'; they also want him to be Abraham Lincoln, JFK, or Buddha - anyone you choose to project on him. Obama is a make-your-own, do-it-yourself leader, a projection of your own mind.

Could the whole Obama circus be an exercise in mass mind control and be so successful because so many people live their lives in a permanent state of trance?

What terrifies the manipulators is that people will abandon hope, as a future, sometime-never projection, and start to demand fairness, justice and freedom now. To avoid this nightmare they need to keep those desires as something to aspire to, not to actually have.

It has been vital to his success, and that of his controllers, that he has never specified what his 'hope', 'change', and that other mind-control trigger-word, 'believe', were referring to in terms of policy and the way society in general will be affected. Hope for what? Change what? Believe in what? To answer those questions with specifics would have been fatal to Obama's appeal."

  11. Dear Randy,

I know this not the right place to ask this question, but I have emergency to hear from you about that.

First of all, Thank you very much for your attention to comments.

There are very rumors about the Palinure International company.
After your speech in their Leadership Conference, leaders use it as their legitimation and legal capacity in USA.

This company have 2 kinds of activities: one, Investment (In more than five markets) and Second, Entertainment (Such as Betting & …).
How do you know this company? Do you confirm it’s both kinds of activities? Do you confirm the legal capacity of it’s investing system?
Did you know we couldn’t find any legal footsteps of companies investing part in anywhere in USA.
Yes, there is some legal points about it’s Entertainment activities but not about companies investment system!
The point is that, the leaders started the network system by investing claim…
And the last question, can you determinately claim that the Palinure International’s investing system is NOT a HYIP ? and it is a real investment company?

we have thousands of Dollars in their investing system and this is vital for us to hear the truth from you.

    Please help us,
    Thank you in advance,
    Hani

  12. Ron Paul ran a terrific campaign. To be able to create such value and aggregate it in a relatively short period of time around a simple message was great to see. It is also great to see his team continuing to seed for the future. They have galvanized a solid following. Their problem was they did not know how to leverage a position into the mainstream (consumer direct, media influence, perception management, etc...). Hence, their very good policy positions and well thought through and time tested solutions never mainstreamed. Can't win like that.

President Elect Obama had a campaign that was administered in a way that others should take note of if they want to win going forward. They identified assets early on and knew how to leverage those assets (electronic, human, tacit and implicit) like none of the other campaigns. They identified "needs" and "wants" and moved swiftly to promise to meet those needs and wants no matter how perceived or real the want or need might have been. They created need and then moved to fill it. They knew how to quietly create a wound and heal it with massive fanfare. They understood leverage and used whenever possible.

Sen. McCain's campaign was, in my opinion, run like he was running for President of the High School Student Council. That might be over done a bit but it was embarrassing. I wanted to see Sen. McCain elected once it was a two person race and was disappointed in how his campaign operated.

About tribes... It was interesting to see Sen. Obama "take" leadership of the Party tribe even when the mainstream thinking was that he would never be able to win the Primary. He took it and claimed leadership of the Party before anyone bestowed leadership upon him. Brilliant move. Such is the way of tribal leadership. It is usually taken first. It is then kept and earned every day through performing acts and deeds that are good for the members of the tribe.

  13. Hani you don't show an email so I can respond privately. So I will post this answer and leave it up for a day only and then remove, as this is not an appropriate place for this question.

I don't know what a HYIP is and I don't rank or endorse individual companies. I also have not studied their investment processes and am not qualified to do so. If you are uncertain, please talk to a licensed professional about that. Thanks, RG

  14. I think they met to have Bob Barr and Wayne Root to be president and vice president. Maybe we need to have smaller government.
This thing with all this bail out money is going to affect my grand children and great grandchildren for many years to come.
What the auto workers need to do is to give up some of their earnings and benefits to keep their jobs.
It does not look like any body has addressed this issue. If they have, I have not heard much about that.
How dare the auto workers think they can keep everything and all the thousands of jobs going out the window or over to India.
What the hell are they thinking?

  15. Firstly let me say I live in Europe so I'm not too clued up on American politics.

As far as I could make out Barack Obama used all the available technology to him like Twitter, Youtube etc which was a clever move. My opinion is that he also mobilised many black people to vote which never voted previously because what the hell nothing ever changes anyway.

As far as the freebies go I live in a socialist country - Austria. Let's just say I'm a socialist at heart what I want for myself I want for every body.

But and this is a HUGE but, that doesn't mean we have no freedom. I'm free to make as much money as i like. Sure I'm taxed more but in another system it seems to me the more you earn the more you are taxed as well. Frankly I don't give a s...t. I'm happy to be in the higher earning bracket.

I'm free to choose which hospital I go to if God forbid I should ever need one. But I'm happy that the state hospital is there, even if my taxes are paying for it. Seriously I couldn't really be happy knowing others are suffering even if they have them selves to blame. I lived in Africa for years and still frequent the place a lot. What I saw there with no system in place is shocking. You will only survive if you belong to the rich and have foreign currency available which the majority do not have.

I don't use the state things. I don't live in a state block of flats, I don't receive social welfare. I do receive child benefits which every body gets which is a citizen of Austria rich and poor alike. And believe me there are enough Austians complaining that the foreigners come here just to live off state hand outs. Common you can't live a wonderful life with that kind of money. Let them have hand outs.

Me I decide how I live my life, what I eat - I eat healthy, lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. I look after myself. Maybe thats why I don't need doctors any way. And yes even here people complain and tell me I'm lucky. Luck? I ask them. I made my own luck. Randy was one of the people whose information I read and digested.

But I see Austria has also been hit by the so called financial crisis. Every body says how are you bearing up with the crisis. What crisis. I don't owe any body money. I don't spend what I can't afford.

Also my bank called me and asked me ages ago if I wanted to buy a mixed packet of shares. I din't buy into it. I don't trust those bankers looking all miserable, throwing me a superficial smile and obviously uncomfortable in those offices they've been chained to. My immediate thought was, "I'll start looking and acting like them, no thanks."

I know I'm writing on but ultimately it's up to you what you make of life and no one else can do it for you. As I say I've lived where there has been absolutely no system in place. I'm quite happy with this social system. I do wonder what will happen when the government has privatized every single business, they already did it with Voest Alpine and lost a huge amount of revenue. And I think governments need their own revenue other wise we gonna pay even more tax.

And yeah here also the government is bailing out the banks and the whiners are complaining about it. What they don't realize if the government doesn't bail out the banks they may loose their savings or retirement fund or what ever all together.

I'm glad I'm not part of the herd.

  16. Bob,

Thanks for the kind words and explanation. I have noticed that the Objectivist movement has attracted a lot of "Kool Aid Connoisseurs" 🙂

Even Ms. Rand herself seemed to have her defenses up to a fault toward the end of her life. Of course, she was sure of her philosophical foundation (as she should have been).

As Intellectual Property and Idealogy are the foundations of True Capitalism, I just want to be sure that the LP is the Real McCoy before embracing it.

    Merry Christmas!

  17. Claudia,

Let me lay the foundation for my comment by saying that I feel you are a very genuine and caring person, and that you have the best of intentions by embracing your philosophy . . .

    However . . .

First things first, let's make sure we have the correct definitions in place. "Socialism" is the current buzz word in American Politics; however, "Fascism" is usually what is meant when using the term. The nuances are as follows:

Socialism - where property ownership AND control are vested in the Government.

Fascism - where property ownership is vested Privately but control is vested in the Government.

One could argue (incorrectly) that Socialism is worse than Fascism; however, as flawed as Socialism is, at least it has the integrity to avoid the illusion of property ownership that Fascism does.

So, assuming that you're discussing Fascism, lets talk about the problems with your philosophy.

This philosophy can best be described as "Altruism by/for Appeasement" and has been embraced by most of the right (especially in religious circles). It can be summed up by the statement, "Oh well, I don't care that the Government took my money, I would have given it away anyway."

The problem with this philosophy is the GUN involved.

You giving your money voluntarily and having it taken from you at the point of a gun are NOT the same.

Now's about the time when you think that I'm some gun-toting freak from the South (and you may be right 🙂 ), or that I'm exaggerating; however, the threat of force if an action is NOT performed IS equivalent to force being applied to compel an action. If you do NOT pay your taxes or evade them, the government WILL use force to collect it!

What this philosophy steals from you is the value-for-value exchange you receive when giving voluntarily. What this philosophy steals from the receiver is the opportunity/ability to learn that they MUST provide value to the universe to receive value in return, thus creating in them an entitlement mentality.

NO Contract can be entered under duress. The Laws of Prosperity will not allow one to claim the benefits of charity taken by force!

    -David

  18. There is an amazingly well done BBC Documentary that was shown as a series in four parts available at Google to view. Title: "The Century of Self".

Very revealing as to how those who desire control over the masses gain that control and keep it. Being an 'old one' by the time they entered analysis of the 40s I could readily identify everything they were detailing in my own memories.

I now feel, after being pitched online by gurus to purchase courses in how to use these 'secrets' to market anything to anyone, anytime, that LOA wasn't the 'secret' that those who wanted more control refused to share and tried to keep hidden.

It was the secret to control over the masses that blocked people from effectively using LOA with consistent results.

As I said, very revealing documentary, and well worth watching and I can say I've never viewed any news or advertising the same since seeing this BBC production.

Am sure if we try...we can pick up on how Politicians have used this same type of covert persuasion to get elected many times.

This is not to reflect on Ron Paul nor Barack Obama and what either of them did to win....just sharing so that people can prosper during the coming changes we're all expecting.

And so none of us forget we cast a vote with every penny we spend! Thinking before spending is a way to stop supporting corporate greed and monopolies...

Would love to hear other's thoughts on the documentary,

    DJ

Bob: My pleasure, David. Yes, Kool-Aid big-time. Those are the ones who, rather than being known as "Randians" (admirers and followers of her brilliant works) they are called "Randroids." And they WILL yell at you and act very irrationally should you write or say anything not 100 percent within their intepretation of Ms. Rand's thoughts. :-). It's too bad, really, because they themselves are extremely intelligent people.
    -----

David wrote: Even Ms. Rand herself seemed to have her defenses up to a fault toward the end of her life.

Bob: And, even before that. Unfortunately, as brilliant as she was (and she certainly was - when reading Atlas Shrugged you'll notice she pretty much predicted everything that has happened. I've got a large collection of her letters and she was truly amazing), she communicated in such a way that caused people to want to argue against her. She did not appear to be concerned about winning people over, which is fine if one's only intent is to spew their philosophy. However, if one wants to persuade those who are not pre-disposed to take your view, you must concern yourself with winning them over. Typically, people must buy into "you" before they'll buy into your contrarian point. Of course, that is just my opinon.

David wrote: Of course, she was sure of her philosophical foundation (as she should have been).

Bob: I totally agree with you.

Bob: Like anything else, they get off-track at times but, generally speaking (actually, I'd say, by far), they are the purest organziation we have in terms of true respect for freedom, liberty and justice for all.

    Thank you, David,

    Bob

  20. Hi Claudia,

Like David, I also believe you are genuine, caring and well-meaning. And, there is not a lot more I can add. I think he said it very well. If I may, I'd like to just make a couple responses:

Claudia wrote: Let’s just say I’m a socialist at heart what I want for myself I want for every body.

Bob: There is certainly nothing wrong with your feeling that way. It's only wrong when you are willing to "force" that on others. And, government is force. And, remember on a practical level, what YOU want for others isn't necessarily what those in power (control) want for them. Dangerous, indeed. Government decisions are political; nothing more and nothing less. Even with good intent on the part of a few (a very few), it typically makes problems much worse for the poor while serving those in power.

    -------
Claudia wrote: I’m free to choose which hospital I go to if God forbid I should ever need one. But I’m happy that the state hospital is there, even if my taxes are paying for it. What I saw there with no system in place is shocking. You will only survive if you belong to the rich and have foreign currency available which the majority do not have.

Bob: With all respect, Claudia, and please pardon my bluntness; you are making a huge fundamental mistake here. You are confusing the fact that because the place you lived in Africa didn't have "socialized medicine" per se that they had a "Free market" health care system. You progably also think that we in the U.S. have a free market health care system.

This is where escaping the herd mentality comes in: It's looking past what the media tells you and what you hear from others, and doing some serious study. Please refer back to my article a couple of Randy's posts ago regarding health-care, and really, really read it, and begin to ask yourself some questions about what you are reading, both pro and con. No one wants anyone to go without proper health care. And, the best way for that to happen is in a free-market health care system. Remember, access to a waiting list is not access to actual health care.

I would also ask you to read the book, "The Capitalist Manifesto" by Andrew Bernstein. While it's far from the only book I've ever read on the topic, I recommend it most often because it proabably provides the best case-by-case look at socialism, statism/facism and actual liberty.

    Thank you,

    Bob

  21. Art ~
While I enjoyed Ron Paul - with what he had to say - I agree with you Art - he isn't captivating enough...

And I truly am impressed with you - having been very vocal with your thougths through-out the election... and then to come herre and post this...

I think it's your willingness to actually see what is positive in another point of view ESPECIALLY when YOU don't subscribe to it. To take on and quesitonw hat is the power behind that... and how can I become more of my potential - like your strengthening your gym discipline...

    Per~
I don't agree with you - I truly saw people who had been dead within themselves awaken to their potential and the inspiration of Barack. They took the power of his transformation and chose to overocme their own stuff and become more dynamic.

I certainly looked at myself and thought "how I can change things?" and "if the world is waiting for me, who am I? What are my gifts? What brings me the deepest joy to give?"

I have been rather surprised by what it became!

Obama brought the gift - as does Randy - that coming from a single parented home and not knowing your father is not a death sentance - in fact it can be the stimulus to propel you into the potential that you are.

No one can be 100% right or wrong... all perspectives hold SOME valid truth!

Yes many people have bought into "Obama will rescue me and the world" When even HE doesn't subscribe to that - he says clearly "you, we, all of us are the ones we have been waiting for" The gift of Obama - should he accept it will come from being an inspirational leader and planting seeds that each person has a duty to themselves to live their greatest potential... to achieve their purpose not matter what.

I hope that he'll envigorate peoples lives more like that...

He certainly shows aspects of this healthy, needed selfishness - by gymming daily and playing ball, and being an awesome father... To be a role model to many who have lost hope or faith in themselves...

Love and luscious joy to you all.. in this very masculine, rational objective place - Randy think we need some flowers and sweetness here too so that it's safe to play for the feminine spirits 😉

    I appreciete your soonest reply.
    Thank you.

      :-p

      Love and giggles,
      Bones.

      -RG

      DJ

    19. David wrote: Thanks for the kind words and explanation. I have noticed that the Objectivist movement has attracted a lot of “Kool Aid Connoisseurs”

      -----

David wrote: Of course, she was sure of her philosophical foundation (as she should have been).

Bob: I totally agree with you.

David wrote: I just want to be sure that the LP is the Real McCoy before embracing it.

    30. Dear Randy

I am one of the investors of Palinure International in Iran. There are very rumors about the Palinure International company here.

      I appreciete your soonest reply.
      Thank you.
