The System in Your Brain

Posted By: Randy GageDecember 26, 2012

Message from RG:  I’m lounging under a palm tree on a much-needed vacation for a few weeks.  So to fill your insatiable need for brilliant and helpful self-development info each morning, I’ve asked some of my clever friends to sit in for me during my absence.  Today’s guest blogger is Lisa Jimenez:

I am excited to have 3 days of blog posts with you while Randy is resting up for his next level of life!  I’ve been a speaker and transformational coach for over 18 years and my greatest delight is helping people radically transform their lives by identifying what they want and breaking through what keeps them from it!

Through combining the head (my degree in psychology) and the heart (my unlimited imagination), I’ve literally seen the miraculous occur in my life as well as in the lives of my clients.  And that’s where we’ll begin with you…

You have an amazing “system” in your brain called “The reticular activating system” (RAS). The RAS is a group of cells in the base of your brain that controls your consciousness.  The RAS works as a filtering system and, if you program it right, it’s one of the most powerful gifts you have to create your Dream Life.

Consider this; at any given moment there are over 2 million bits of sensory information bombarding you at the same time. If you were aware of all these bits of action and information, you’d go insane!  So, you have the RAS to help you filter all this stimulation.

Can you guess how many bits of information your RAS allows in for you to see and process? Out of all the million bits of information coming at you in any given moment, the RAS lets in and processes only 5 – 9 bits of information.

So, I’ve got an important question for you…

What do you think DECIDES what the 5 – 9 bits of information is?

IT’S YOUR THOUGHTS!

If you want to “see a better result” in your life, then program your thoughts to represent the RESULTS you want to see!  Remember, your RAS filters out everything that doesn’t support your most prevalent THOUGHTS.

If you and I were having a conversation and I told you about my Red Lexus and you began picturing my Red Lexus, what type of car do you think you’d begin seeing on your drive home? Yes! A Red Lexus. This is your RAS at work.

Whatever you THINK about, your RAS goes to work to attract it and filters out everything else. Just imagine the implications of this!

What would your RESULTS look like if you chose to program your RAS to see and attract that perfect partner, leaders for your business opportunity, your dream home, the car you’ve always wanted!

Your RAS will filter out everything else and you will begin noticing the ideas, the people and the opportunities that help you achieve your desire.

The reality is you’ve been seeing the power of your Reticular Activating System all your life. But for most of you it’s been with negative experiences. You think debt and your RAS goes to work to filter out opportunity and gives you more debt. You think about limitations and doubt and your RAS goes to work to filter out everything but what is your most prevalent thought.

What would it look like if you applied this teaching to attract a desire? Give the RAS a spin today. Train yourself to think on one specific goal today. What one specific result do you want to attract? Think on that specific picture. Speak those specific words. Plant your desired result in your RAS and watch what you begin noticing. You’ll be amazed at what begins opening up for you.

You can transform your results by retraining the brain. Choose thoughts of creation, opportunity, expansion and love and your RAS will get to work to filter out everything but these things.

Please share what thoughts you planted in your RAS in a post below.

You are miraculously designed! Start tapping into the power of your brain and watch your Reticular Activating System (RAS) go to work for you.

Make it a miraculous day,

- Lisa Jimenez M.Ed.

  1. I don't know about the "attraction" part.  I don't think the awareness or the RAS and using it as a filtering tool is going to "attract" anything.  I do think it can make you better at a lot of things.  I use it to to be more present with the people I am listening to .

    1. @Annieb Thanks for your comment! While the Reticular Activating System doesn't actually attract the item, idea or person; it absolutely helps you see the item, idea and person as it filters out other bits of information! The KEY to utilize the power of the RAS is to FOCUS the mind to 'think on' one particular picture (item, idea or person) and just watch what you begin to see that previously you would have been blind to. Fascinating!

      1. @Lisa Jimenez Yes, I agree.  It is good you brought the topic up, it is an important part of our brain to be aware of.

  7. Lisa abosolutely correct.. Our Unconscious Mind and Old Outdated belief's can either make us or break us and if we start to replace those belief's with what we DO want and Positive Belief's and Empower that Filter we can achieve some amazing things... RAS is a Powerful place and Tool if Used correctly

  9. I pay attention to my feelings.  Since I know that our thoughts create our feelings, a low feeling is an indicator: DELETE that thought!  Contrariwise, any thinking that creates positive, high vibe feelings is worth accentuating.  I am not a very 'visual' person, so I don't really "see" what I want, but as a very kinesthetic person, I can realllllly get into the feeeeeling of thoughts like, "I'm happy, I'm wealthy, I'm peaceful, etc.

This brings up a question:  Is the RAS connected to the vision centers of the brain? Most of what I've heard about the RAS implies that it is about "pictures" and seeeeing what we want.  I am guessing that the RAS may also be activated by hearing about what I want, getting into the feeeeling of what I want - for example, I know and can experience how I will feel, walking in my future-garden, but I can't quite see it.  Do I need to seeee what I want in order to activate the RAS?  Do I need pictures that are more-or-less-not-really-exactly what I want?
