The Success Habit

Posted By: Randy GageFebruary 4, 2013

No one wins the Super Bowl on just a Sunday, climbs a mountain in one trek, or becomes a billionaire by taking a company public in a day.

Success is created over a space of time, as you gain wisdom, learn new skills, and develop character.

You don’t really create your future:  You create your daily habits and they create your future.

So what are your daily habits?  And are they taking you closer to your dreams - or keeping you from them?

  1. I'm getting more and more familiar with this concept of habits instead of goals, especially after reading ZenHabits for so long, and I agree, it's all about incremental changes. So now I try to think more of who I want to become and what it means in terms of my behaviour, rather than just setting goals for the future. After all, in the future, it will still be me having to achieve all these things!

  3. As you suggest, Randy, it STARTS with Taking the Inventory:
    What habits do I have?
     Which of these are useful?
Which ones need to be dumped?

First the inventory, and then....improve the Inventory!  Every shopkeeper knows, if one want to make more money,  one has to MOVE the inventory....sometimes to the dumpster, sometimes to the sale-table, sometimes to a higher shelf...and get in new, better inventory.

Benjamin Franklin used this very concept - changing habits - to change his life.  It's in his Autobiography. I borrowed a copy from the library, and photocopied the appropriate page (his Habits Chart) for my files.  Maybe time to get that out and dust it off....Thanks for the reminder, Randy.

  5. Your Daily habits reflect your true thoughts & beliefs.

You say you want to be healthy, but do you eat healthy & exercise? Do you sabotage your health?
You say you want to be debt free, but is that reflected in your spending & debt?
You say you want to be positive, but do you read, watch & listen to positive or negative people?
You say you want to be successful, but do you do THE WORK that is needed or do you procrastinate?
You say you want to be prosperous, but are you living in poverty?
    ...etc.

  6. Bernice makes some great points.. Our point of attention is our point of attraction.. And as we all know, the thoughts, beliefs and feeling we have govern our outer world. When we self sabotage ourselves by NOT committing to change and creating our "New You" that is associated with our dream, it's a vicious cycle that self perpetuates. Many people will commit to a great diet, fitness routine, work ethic, but find their lives aren't moving forward, so we have to ask ,"What do you believe in and what are you willing to change?".. As you say Randy, it's the habits that require the critical thinking and WILLINGNESS to change.. I just read an awesome quote from Wayne Dyer, " By believing passionately in something that does not yet exist, we create it".. That's a GREAT habit for all of us that seek to live the amazing dream that's possible.

  12. That's why the saying of those successful people fail the most. Because they have been taking massive actions that cause them to fail. Without actions, there can be no failures. They learn so much lessons from those failures to get it right the next time.

Imagine they are taking 10x more action than the rest. They are going to fail 10x more than the rest and learning 10x more lessons. So their success rate is also 10x more.
