The Sound of Silence

Posted By: Randy GageAugust 22, 2019

I love music.  Really love it.  Yet you’ll never hear me playing any at home in the mornings.  I start every day the same way.  With silence.  No TV, no radio, no background noise of any kind.   I honestly believe this habit is one of the secrets to my success.

I know people who cannot be in their home without the TV or radio on.  They’re desperately afraid to be alone with their thoughts.

Quiet time lets you reflect and is quite conducive to critical thinking.  And it calms your being, which lets you operate at a higher consciousness.  I think it is critical to create some quiet time every single day.

So how are you doing with that?

  1. I totally agree with this. I have My wonderful wife knows that I desire quiet times during the day so that I can think without distraction. I am doing very well with my quiet times. Thank you for asking. Have a great life.

    1. I once wrote a poem called, "The Sound of Silence" then some years later I decided to explore my aloneness which mean't for me putting the TV in the garage so I would not be tempted, no radio, During this time I came to know myself as I was at long last facing myself and my fears. I stopped running away and avoiding which I was prone to do - I began to love the silence and the solitude and much to my surprise there was no loneliness in it, even though I was alone for sometimes days at a time (my choosing). I also began to get in touch with my unconscious and began to do what I had always dreamed of doing which was, 'Making my unconscious conscious" a la Carl Jung. My very worst fear was facing Christmas Day alone as my son had died on Christmas day....not wanting to avoid this day by running out to people I decided to face Christmas day alone - I realised I had built up all sorts of expectations, my assumptions were frightening BUT I realised I did not know what it would be like until I did it,....and LO AND BEHOLD I woke up on Chrstmas morning, went to the crematorium and then came home to spend the rest of the day alone AND I was greatly OK...I even cooked myself a duck dinner. To overcome such a fear as this would have been worth spending 10 years alone because this is what happens when you can start facing your very own self in your aloneness. It also mean't I could be with people and be OK because I did not want anything from them but to enjoy their company. Once I would have run out of the house to be with people in order to assuage my fears and my fear of being alone with my thoughts. I wish you all your own exploration. Jane

      1. So sorry to hear about your son. May his memory be a blessing. I love the other things you wrote and am delighted that you have found such peace and enlightenment! -RG

  2. Love quiet time, absolutely love it in the am too! AM - No, news, No TV, radio Nothing but the birds chirping and me sipping on my coffee. I cannot start my day with negativity from the outside.
