Life without self-awareness can hardly be called life. Because if you don’t have self-awareness, you’re simply a puppet or a robot operated and manipulated by forces outside of yourself.
Self-awareness is the ability to watch yourself – everything happening inside and outside around you – and view it objectively as if it were happening to someone else. You divorce yourself from emotions and fears and see the situation neutrally.
When you’re angry, you notice it and search for the hidden fear which is causing it. You notice when you’re being petty or impatient and decide that is not the kind of person you want to be. When you show love and kindness, you notice the blessings these provide others and resolve to do more of this.
What you are aware of – you control. What you’re not aware of – controls you.
