The Reason for Reason

Posted By: Randy GageJuly 21, 2011

Some say reason is a blind guide and it will take you away from truth.  Some fundamentalists would have you believe that reason involves denying the existence of God.  This is probably because atheists usually base their arguments upon reason.  Of course the fundamentalists are usually making their arguments without reason, purely upon faith.

Unfortunately both sides are usually practicing neither reason nor faith, but are instead simply propagating the mind viruses they have been infected with.

The power of reason…

The dictionary defines reason as the ground, principle, or motive of anything said or done; the final cause.  It is the faculty of intelligence in man that separates us from the lower life forms.

You can make the argument that reason is an encompassing enough word to even stand for truth.   In Archbishop Trench’s celebrated work on words he said. Reason and Word “are so essentially one and the same that the Greek language has one word for them both.”  He is saying the word of God is the reason of God.

Interestingly enough, some translations of Lao-tze’s Tao use the word reason.  In fact, some Chinese translations of the New Testament state, “In the beginning was the Tao.”

The true essence of reason has nothing to do with ephemeral opinions, but with established truth.  If you possess the faculty of pure reason, you reject mind viruses, recognize all preconceived opinions as worthless, and avoid the propensity for prejudice.

Instead of attempting to prove or disprove, you process both sides of the equation, carefully and dispassionately weighing each extreme, to come to truth.

This doesn’t mean you are immune to emotion or spirit…

The person of reason still experiences their emotions, but they are discerning enough to look into the causes that are creating them.  They also know that spiritual things must be spiritually discerned, and realize this is a natural and logical process for understanding the way Infinite Intelligence operates.

Reason is what separates man from blindly following his animalistic inclinations.  While there is a higher consciousness than reason, reason is the bridge that will take you there.

So how do you process and arrive at your truth?  Especially about emotional subjects like religion.  Have you actually done the critical thinking using your capacity for reason – or have you just replicated mind viruses without even realizing you are infected with them?  Please share your thoughts below.

P.S.  After 19 hours of flying, I’ve landed in Moscow.  Such a fascinating place.  The picture is to show you how modern and growing the city is becoming.  That is the view from the Mirax Plaza building

  1. How would it be possible to answer your last question? If I am infected with a mindvirus without knowing it, how can I possibly answer that question?

    1. Great question Rene. That is a blind spot for everyone.

You start with asking if you have the same religious beliefs as your parents have, that they are the same you were taught before you were ten years old - or did they come from actual rational thought and evaluation.

It also helps to have people in your life that you can check things out with, knowing they will tell you the truth, but not in a judgmental or malicious way.

  2. That's a fascinating & profound question.

It was Mahatma Gandhi, who was an eternal seeker of Truth, who said that to know God, you must know truth. And he goes on to say this:

"All that I can in true humility present to you is that Truth is not to be found by anybody who has not got an abundant sense of humility. If you would swim on the bosom of the ocean of Truth, you must reduce yourself to a zero."

I've translated that into this operational stand: Come from knowing I know nothing, being open to allow diverse information to come to me, being in tune with my inner voice to accurately discern based on the tenets of love and compassion, and then deciding which input to adopt as a truth in my life and which to discard; that's how I've been processing and arriving at my truth.

Thanks for this post, it's deep but necessary.

"How do i process and arrive at my truth?"

If people ask themselves this question moment-to-moment as they live their lives, there would be less conflict in the world.

PS: Much love rocksta, glad you arrived safely in Moscow - be amazing as usual. xoxo

  3. Hi Randy,

    another great post.

As a guy from Germany and a non-native English speaker I am amazed by the variety of possible translations of the word "reason".

It is not translatable without the context.

It can mean the reason why we are doing something, then it's rather the cause, the motivation or the driving force.

We would translate it differently when it's about the reasoning faculty of the human race.

So it's not astonishing that you guys are arguing about the definition ?

On the other hand, with these two ideas of "reason" in mind I can see the connecting link between the reason why and the reasoning faculty.

On the other hand, our word for faith, belief and also creed is one and the same what makes it difficult to discriminate between these three concepts without further explanation.

And now you are opposing these two - reason and faith.

Is it possible that the connecting link between these two notions of "reason" is Faith ?

Wow, so you are now only two flight hours away from me. When are you in Germany ?

    Take care

  4. Hi Randy,

I like your mention of a blind spot in the comments.

Only now am I seeing how delusional I have been, in many areas of my life.

I was blind because I didn't see what meme's were doing to me. Or how I allowed meme's to infect my mind.

Through deep meditation and receiving super feedback from those around me, I gradually ID'ed the meme's and I use reason more to reach certain decisions.

That being said, I am rarely reasonable 😉

Thanks for sharing RG. Enjoy Moscow!

Where can I find the schedule of your events?

    I live in Moscow) Welcome!

  6. Interesting topic. I find reason very simply explained by the size of one's heart. Everything is reasoned from our heart. Out of the mouth, speaks the heart. The reason equates to the size. I always pray for a discerning heart. I believe God is the only one capable of growing or healing them.

  7. Randy you're right on point with this post, I just returned from a home town California book tour, where I was raised and deep rooted in Christian beliefs in a Baptist culture. Organize religion and beliefs are the most challenging conversations you can have with family without offended them. I choose to keep it simple by saying understand its (Religion) is much bigger than what you've currently learned, I encourage you to read more than one source, and expand your awareness. Because the Truth is really not debatable.

  8. Fantastic topic Randy, I love this matter.

Let's take a look at the Christian's manual - The Holly Bible. If we need to understand something, we need to start from the beginning, correct?

In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a
formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God
swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, "Let there be light" and there
    was light.
    Genesis 1:1-3

From the emptiness, what tool did God use to create the light? # answer 1

Now lets take a look at the Tao te Ching.

The tao that can be told
    is not the eternal Tao
The name that can be named
    is not the eternal Name.

The unnamable is the eternally real.
    Naming is the origin
    of all particular things.

From Tao, what creates the origin, our reality as we perceive, but the eternal Tao?
    answer #2

What defines beautiful or ugly, right or wrong, day and night, hard or soft? answer #3

Now match these 3 answers. Bingo! The creation of our reality as we perceive.

  9. Hey Randy,
I generally do not live on auto-matic pilot mode reacting to everything that I here.

I have an internal BS detector which allows me to detect truth or fiction.

    Good Luck in Moscow.

  10. Pure consciousness - this is the cause of the fire, the fire disappears and the reason for its occurrence remains!

  11. I don't mind you paraphrasing James Allen because he rocks. I have his essays beside my bed and read one almost every night and meditate on it. But I think, for honesty's sake, that you should put a disclaimer when you do. Just a thought...

    1. I mention James and his work all the time, and often state that i try to take his work and put it in the context and language of today. And I never just paraphrase him, but put my take on it.

  12. I have a feeling that this you said here is very very interesting,so before I go to sleep I will think about it again, and then tomorrow I will have a REASON to read it AGAIN...
