The Reality of Your Thoughts

Posted By: Randy GageJune 8, 2018

We have talked a lot about having awareness of the nature of your thoughts.  This is critical if you have the intent to take charge of them, thus taking charge of the results in your live.

So what happens when you realize you’ve been basically conditioned and programmed for negative thoughts your whole life?

I joke in my seminars about someone I know who has “worst case, thermonuclear meltdown scenario” syndrome. For some reason, she never says, “Careful you might trip and twist your ankle.” She always seems to say something like, “Careful, or you'll trip and break your neck.”

All kidding aside, there is a serious side to that.  There are many people who almost always see things in a negative light, fear for the worst, and expect bad things to happen.  I know, because I was one of them for 30 or 35 years.

The first step is becoming aware of your thoughts.  Next you must accept that you are not your thoughts.  Your thoughts are a small part of who you are.  But they play a huge role in determining the kind of person you become.

Here’s what’s next…

You have to get a real and honest appraisal of the slant of most of your thoughts.  You must avoid denial and get an accurate picture of the kind of thoughts you have.  Even if you discover that 99% of your thoughts are negative – that is still a positive step.  Because then you know what to work on.

So start there.  Take today and study your thoughts at every opportunity.  We’ll pick up this subject in the post on Monday.  Until then, have a great weekend!

  1. Many years ago, I got this realization directly from you: "Wait a second... The common point in all of this sh%t happening to me that's making me so unhappy is... Me!". It seems so obvious in retrospect - but it was the start of a very personal journey observing, deconstructing and re-molding my way of thinking. This is a lifelong journey, sometimes painful and irritating, but it's also incredibly liberating! I believe that regularly questioning my thoughts is the best habit I have developed. And for this I am truly grateful. Thank you!

  2. i like your mention that our thoughts are only a small part of who we are... i find as i get older that i am more able to catch the 'defaults' to those old thoughts that i took on, that weren't even mine - that were in fact, my mother's negative thoughts and thinking... now, i focus more on how i'm feeling or resonating remembering that i have choice in what wish to feel or think... thank you Randy yet again for great insight...

  3. This is good - Your point struck me and I went back and read it all over again. A good realization for me to have and follow through on.

  4. Since most of our thoughts are triggered by our subconscious (there is something in our past that triggers that thought, negative response, anger, etc. which we are not even aware of) how do you suggest getting past the "gatekeeper" in order to get into the subconscious area of our minds to recognize and correct those past incidents that trigger negative thoughts and responses?

  5. Best post youve made for s while. So important to be reminded we are not our thoughts but unless we control them, they can almost take us over.

  6. Great post Randy.. definitely make me more aware of stopping neg thoughts as soon as they pop up.. too bad Bourdain couldn't have done so, could tell the guy had a big self-loathing problem.. too bad he didn't get help for it..

    1. Thanks Randy looking forward to reading your training next week.
I was a self destructing grown up (at 84 very grown up) until my wife gave me the book "Law of Attraction" to read and change my mindset to what I want! not what that inner negative brain was telling me.
Now to train my brain with your guidance !.

  7. Great post!
Absolutely helpful... but many times I find myself in “overthinking” position. That’s when negatives come to my mind... if I could get rid of overthinking habit then most of my negative thoughts will be gone. That damn mind wants to analyze everything that what’s behind...
