The Real Question to Ask

Posted By: Randy GageNovember 17, 2010

One of my former coaching clients was traveling with some people in a car, when the subject of tithing came up.  One of the people involved had bought a property one year ago for $80,000.  Now they are in a position to sell it for $170,000.  After taking out the loan repayment and the tax component, she will be left with about $60,000 and she stated that she would “have a great problem with giving the church 10 percent.”

When questioned she related that her church is a very affluent one, and helps the homeless by feeding and clothing them.  She also said that if she gives to the section of the church that supports the homeless, then the money would not be tax deductible, but if she gives to the building fund it would be.

The responses from the other three people in the car were:
1) Sorry but I wouldn't give any, as you need to give to yourself before you can give to others.
2) Sorry but I have a great problem with giving to any church as I don't believe.
3) Maybe do not give the $6,000 but give $1,000.

My client was interested in my take on these three options.  Personally I think that is the wrong question to ask.  I wouldn’t even bother with debating percentages, whether it was tax deductible, or anything like that.  I would back up and look at the big issue.  And that leads us to the real question to ask:

What kind of prosperity are these three people manifesting in their own lives?  You see, maybe they are not qualified to answer that question.  Think about it.

  1. I got the idea of Money Mystique from Linda Goodman's Star Signs . She discusses the importance of letting go of a part of what you get. This had motivated me to give a part of my income regularly, and I had enjoyed a lot of benefits of letting go in terms of career improvement, even when I had no idea about attraction or prosperity consciousness. Small acts of kindness empowers us with a lot of courage and feeling of worthiness.

  2. I see needy thinking, and focused on a negative to the exclusion of possibilities, and lack thinking, or holding on just in case.

The more you give, the more you receive. It's that simple. 10% of your income to whatever organizations you feel improve the planet. It's that simple to me.

It is not specific to churches, it's about giving back.

    Have an awesome day, Randy.

  3. Always, always, always give your 10% tithe. You get back what you put out into the universe. It's good to be selfish, but never, never, never try to slight God. You will pay your tithe on that money one way or another..........

  4. Two thoughts...first it IS appropriate to be a good steward of your tithing. Give in an effective way. Tax deductibility is a factor not in terms of motivation TO give but in the practical effect of how much you are ultimately giving. It's strange that giving to "that portion" of the church would not be tax deductible, whereas the building fund is deductible. A tax specialist should check that out. Sounds like a myth to me.

Having said that, the purpose is to CHOOSE to give because it's healthy, positive, and desirable to do so. Niggling over percentages is really a heart issue not a financial one. A 10% tithe is simply a practical calculation and helpful benchmark. The point is to look at your income as NOT ALL YOURS TO CONSUME...but as an opportunity to SHARE...not because you have to, or are keeping score, but because you WANT to.

  5. Hi Randy,

These people manifest according to their level of vibration.

The universe reads their stingy vibe and is stingy with them. Hold back, and it will be held back from you.

Dollar amounts don't make a difference. The feeling behind the giving is what counts. We label, the universe doesn't. We use terms like a lot or a little, the universe simply mirrors our predominant level of vibration.

It's a universe of feelings and thoughts/labels mean little without feelings to back them up. When I was broke I had $10 to my name. I gave $2 to a source of spiritual nourishment - and felt awesome about it - and the next day $200 showed up from an unexpected source. If my prosperity consciousness were expanded it could have been $2000, $20,000, or any dollar amount. The perceiver creates the experience.

Thanks for sharing and have a powerful day!

  6. I think where a lot of people miss the boat on this one is that they do not come from a genuine place with regards to tithing. You can't fool God. Even if you give 10%, if it is not given in gratitude and you speak of the giving to others, then the reward is in the self recognition. There should be no thought of who is doing what with the money. If it is giving for anything that will help someone in need or positively impact a cause, then it is a blessing. I recall being in New York City with a friend and passing a man with a cup on the sidewalk. My friend said, "I never know if these guys are scaming". My response was, it doesn't matter. If you see a need, fill it as best you are able. Let god do what only god can do, and that is judge the person at the intended time. If giving isn't making you feel great, then you need to evaluate this. No gift will return if it is not a genuine act of kindness.

  7. As being Muslim, we should give 20% of our yearly income, I know it may sound strange, but when you do that you really don't feel the absence of that amount of money.

I don't exactly know what those three manifest, but as you always say, "we can't out give the universe", I think they should watch your video named "The circulation law of prosperity"

  8. Tithing is an interesting subject.

I used to give at least 20% to charity thinking that I was doing good and helping others. But then I looked deeper into what the charities were doing and decided to stop. Especially the illness charities who put reminders of the illness everywhere and create huge fear in people. Take the race for life as an example. There are millions of women all over the world running with the name of a disease written on their chests. Not something I want to support. Or those that plaster guilt boards of starving children to remind us to think of poverty.

I know that you say in your audio programme that charity is not a tithe and is to be done on top. You also said that 'it is not the law - but your knowledge of the law that creates the results'. Sounds a bit fishy to me.

Gravity is a law and doesn't care what I know about it. It always works the same.

So as I think most churches promote lack and guilt I won't give to them. But when I buy a self development product that helps me to grow as a person then I am giving to that source so that they can increase their marketing and help others get the same benefit I had. The price I pay to them is like putting money in their basket.

Because I am developing myself then I increase my income earning potential and get more to add to my development. I become more of a source of inspiration and others around me get the benefit. At least 50% of my income goes to this through coaching, trainings, mentoring, audios and books.

This seems to make more sense and works despite any airy fairy notion that God up there will give to me if I give to a minister because he has appointed himself as the saviour of man.

I think if a law is a law then it works despite our knowledge of it.

    1. That is an interesting question. But if everything at its core essence is energy - and at its core everything is energy vibration - then it it stands to reason that it will be effected by other energy. Or does it?

      -RG

  9. The 3 other people do not know the power of tithing or in my case I am a muslim we call it Zakat. You give a percentage of your income to your spiritual nourishment. I will tell anybody on this forum or any other forum by me personally practicing this strategy consistently is the single most important reason why I am financially Independent today!

  10. What people need to understand is that what you give away you get to keep. It comes back to you 1000 times. It will not just come back to you in terms of money. It can come back to you in terms of health, happiness, and relationships.

    1. Do we have because of Altruistic giving or do we have because of providing products and services to people who want to exchange money so we can get what we want?

If we believe in what our own company is doing and peoples lives are improved by dealing with us then why do we need to give our money to someone else who may not use the money as wisely as we do?

When we get past religious programming then most of the giving makes absolutely no sense and is based on fear, guilt, or wanting the universe to take care of us.

Providing jobs is a worthy cause because it prevents poverty (although people would argue that giving to homeless shelters is more noble) I like upstream solutions not desperation solutions. Making products and services more affordable raises standards of living and enhances culture. Providing quality housing makes a country more attractive and stable. Investing in our own development makes us a better person.

When we look at why the law of giving really works (beyond religious wooo wooo ideals) then it is really very simple. If I improve your life and save you time or money then you will want to give money to me in exchange and the I can improve my life.

I like to give something to receive someones money. I like to get something when I give someone money. The tithe principle is really the self development principle. That is why we need to give up not down. So we can learn the skills to climb up higher then sell the system of climbing to lower levels.

Not because some deity in the sky like Santa Clause will say well done, put me on the nice list and reward me.

      1. There are some things that are more easily understood when 'experienced' rather than 'explained' ... like gratitude, selflessness ~ and tithing.

  11. The comments that were made by the 3 mark them for what they are and for their character. I would have been prompted to ask if they did ANY volunteer work, or charity activity AT ALL?!! When I started volunteering in the community it was for a selfish set of reasons - goals. After a couple of decade the return for my time and some monies is far and beyond the original shallow, narrow goals. The recognition by my community members who were once strangers - are now partners in action. I am acknowledged in the street - in public areas constantly - really amazing me every day that my volunteering lead to becoming a community member and then a community leader. Awesome - intangible results. Props to you RG - you helped me get there.

  12. Where the bible quotes to give 10% of your first fruits, I understand this to mean that all abundance comes from God and it is his will, not option that we do so. He allows us to keep 90%. The condition for the giving is that it must be to support God's good. This could be all kinds of worthy causes from feeding and clothing children to drilling wells for clean water, etc.. It is not specifically intended to be given to the church, though we are asked to support her. I hope this helps to clear up any misunderstandings. I think it's a pretty generous package. I'm sure Randy would agree this to be true, that if you give from love and gratitude, you won't even be able to count the blessings that will come into your life and the greatest are never monitary though God intends us to be prosperous and overflowing with abundance.

  13. That's very interesting now that you put it this way.

Thinking about tax deductions really is looking at it the wrong way. That's coming more from a place of lack, trying to squeeze out the best deal, when there is no deal.

I personally think I'd have a lot more fun just graciously giving 10% to something I truly believed in.

  14. If we don't believe in the service our own business is providing then I guess giving to someone we do believe in would be a good idea. Why would we go into a business that is not aligned with our principles.

The purpose of business is to find something that needs improved, then sell the solution. Therefore helping both sides. Perfect exchange. We need to get off our high horses thinking that we can come in and save the day.

Tithing is self development and at very minimum 10% should go there. To improve the world around us we do that through effective business. Capitalism and mans selfish desires for more, has done much more to progress the quality of our lives than anything else.

Look at micro financing in Africa. It will help the people to build their own countries and lives. Not like the charities who keep people weak and needy. And it will make a great profit in the process.

I don't much like do gooders. It is usually the path to Socialism. Always thinking they know what is best for everyone. If someone wants something they will pay for it.

  15. My question would be - "Why does it have to be the church ?" I belive in sharing your success with those who have none....however...why the church, why not share with an organisation that you can stand up for or give the money to an individual who can use it to better his/her life?

My point is this - allways be prepared to help people who need your help - then how the help gets there (church or other organisation) is less important. In fact if you can stand up for another foundation and not for the church then it serves much greater purpose to use the other foundation. But allways remember.....where where you today if nobody ever gave you a hand?

And then back to the question....the three people in the car is not manifesting prosperity at all !

    1. In answer to your question Michael, tithing is giving back to the source of your spiritual nourishment. Giving to other individuals and causes can be good and helpful, but that is not tithing.

      -RG

      1. what about people without a spritual source, lets say, an atheist? or what if this blog is my only source of spirituality? 🙂

        1. Then if it make's you feel spiritual make your tithing to Randy. Then let him decide how best to put it to good use.

Now you have a spiritual release without the guilt of nor believing.

          Gary

  16. The Universe will have its tithe. Better to offer what belongs to it in the first place. The property owner was careful to understand that paying back the loan was important enough to do that it was the first thing she factored into the equation. The loan wasn't the only item requiring recompense.

  17. If tithing works for a person, then so be it. I know people who do not tithe and they are doing pretty well. So they are having results from the law of not tithing. Since the people closest to me are athiests like myself, this is an issue I cannot relate too.

  18. Hahahaha! I think EVERYONE has missed the point to this exercise.

Randy is not asking what you all think of tithing, he's asking, who are you asking what they think of tithing???

Randy has helped me tremendously in my prosperity thinking not because of his opinions but because he symbolizes what I want and what I respect, so in this area, I would ask someone like Randy what he thinks and whatever he thinks, is something for me to ponder.

If you don't agree with Randy then his blog is nothing you can learn from - at least not in the area of tithing.

My question for someone like Randy is if I should tithe on net or gross profits? I've always been told to tithe on gross profits.

    Claudia

  19. oops my comment went on the slumdog one! Maybe it's a good place for it lol. You and Catherine Ponder (who you recommend in your book) inspired me to finally get on with tithing, not just reading about it. It is a leap of faith and each time I do it I'm reminded how far I've come.

Personally I don't think it has to be a church. If someone gives 10% to a cause that inspires them it becomes relevant for non religious people too right?

Otherwise they don't feel it is for them.

  20. The client states she does go to church. I will consider her a believer for this reply. Based on that, one must defer to the Bible for the answer.

The Bible is very clear about tithing and giving. The first 10% of your income is your first fruits. You are returning to God a portion of what He has bestowed to you. Your tithing is done out of respect and honor to Him for what he has given you. Tithing is to be done with purpose and intention. It should be a pleasure to give, and the Bible says to give cheerfully. The Bible also clearly states that your obedience in tithing will be returned to you in abundance.

Tithing isn't done with a heart that is concerned with what will I get back? It isn't done with a concern for is this church affluent or not? God doesn't need your money, He needs your obedience and to see you are willing to follow Him. That is what He rewards. Why choose money? Because it's what most people hold onto the most tightly. If you will obey God with your money, you will obey Him with everything else.

The hand you give from is the hand you receive from. If your fist is tightly holding on to what it already has, it's not open to get more.

For the three in the car, if they are not believers, their opinion is moot. They aren't playing from the same rulebook as the client who received the payment.

The first person said to put yourself first, which is not what the Bible says. The second person said they weren't a believer. The third is confusing tithing with giving. Tithing is always the first 10%. A gift is anything additional you feel led to give to the church, a charity, etc. There is no specific percentage for giving. Giving can include your time, money, resources, etc. Giving and tithing are not the same thing.

If you don't agree with Randy then his blog is nothing you can learn from - at least not in the area of tithing.

My question for someone like Randy is if I should tithe on net or gross profits? I've always been told to tithe on gross profits.

    19. oops my comment went on the slumdog one!
