The Real Danger

Posted By: Randy GageMay 7, 2010

In yesterday’s post, we talked about the three types of visions you can have for yourself:
·    Positive
·    Negative
·    Neutral

I asked if you have trouble because sometimes you slip back into the negative or neutral visions.  If you’re like most people (me included), it can happen once in a while.

What’s one of the biggest causes?

Hanging around with the wrong people.  People without their own positive vision.  And you know which group of the two is the most dangerous?

The people with the NEUTRAL vision.  Here’s why:

The negative people you already know about.  You realize that they are negative, and you usually have your force field up when you are around them.  You discount the things they say, because you consider the source.

The real danger is the others...

Who may be your mother, the people you work with every day, or even your spouse.  Someone you think is supportive of you, but actually is causing you to lower your expectations and accept a lot less out of yourself.  And thus, a lot less out of life.

So what about the people around you every day?  What kind of influence are they having on you?  Really think about it.  And please share your insights below.

  1. It is easy to slip back into the negative mind set when things start to get a little tough in life, this is when you should read or watch something inspiring or positive!

  2. We have choices in Life and this topic is about making one of the more important ones, providing we hold a vision for ourselves. The problem with being around people without vision is that it can take away from what we KNOW is possible.

Staying in our comfort zone and not paying attention to the influence the people we choose to be around leaves us stuck. What we resist, persists. Am sure we all know the statement about the five people that are closest to us, etc. Well I am choosing to have 5 extraordinary people that are closest and those people are showing up one at a time!

Life is about inspiration, infinite possibility and Joy. People that don't take action and can't see beyond their nose are not the sort of people to be around.

I made a new choice months ago and things change every day!

  3. For me the real challenge comes when people who supposedly should support you (in my case - relatives) due to their narrow context of reality assault your vision of prosperous and bright future with such phrases like ''you can't make it. It's too unrealistic. you have to be highly educated to achieve your goals. the economy is harsh and your dreams of living a prosperous life will highly unlike be fulfilled'' etc. When facing with a horde of such expressions and living in a country which is among the three worst economies in Europe , it sometimes indeed becomes tuff to pump fuel internal into your internal furnace so that it could maintain your positive vision of future .Sometimes it becomes even harder to keep aspiring forward towards the attainment of your vision when you see people with bleak hopeless vision of future. It feels as if you are left alone, and there's noone to support you. But nonetheless, deep faith that every individual if undertakes such intention can actualize his vision, keeps me going..

  4. Staying focused and motivated is not easy and requires day to day work, yes we all fall sometimes, but if you are working on your self development everyday, your posture becomes stronger, it turns into a belief and in the end the one that ends up influencing the rest is you! It is however a fact that you need to stay close to those people that lift you and not be the one that lifts, otherwise eventually they will succed and will fall, we are not ready to carry such a load.

    Have an amazing weekend!

  5. Hey Randy-
I get your point about watching who and what we surround ourselves with and being conscious of our personal space, but I completely disagree with your conclusion about the "cause" of our slipping. ("What’s one of the biggest causes? Hanging around with the wrong people.")

This is what I call "false cause". NOTHING outside of ourselves is "the cause" of our slipping back. It is always our thoughts and interpretations of things that move us forward or backwards. As humans we get influenced by who we surround ourselves with, but to say anyone else is "the cause" of our thinking is exactly the opposite of what you teach about critical thinking.

We slip because it's fundamentally human to want to feel safe with something familiar and it's comforting to fit in and belong, but it is our own thinking that decides that from moment to moment.

The other fundamental truth is that we have "body memory" along with mind memory. Often it's the dynamics with those closest to us (friends and family) that subconsciously remind us of experiences from when we were kids. It is not the people and what they do or say, but "gut level" memory that kicks in and replays the decisions and beliefs we made as kids as we were trying to figure out our place in the world. This is "the cause" of slipping back.

When we learn to handle our false beliefs... ( "I have to be good, I have to be safe, I have to be quiet, I have to protect myself, I have to find a way to be noticed, I never get my way, I'm unlovable" etc. etc) ...and begin to notice when these kick in day to day, that is when we have the power to move forward.

It is not always easy, but if we understand that it's always our thoughts, not the circumstances, that create our actions and moods then the power to "avoid slipping" and move forward is in our hands, no matter where we are.
    Jeanne
PS. One more thought/question... don't we risk of becoming self-righteous, un-caring and superior in our thinking if we spend our days judging other people?

  6. I like the three groups. I call them pessimists, optimists and visionaries.

Pessimists are always right. If they are producing something and you ask them to commit to what they will produce next week. They always hedge their numbers. If they did 10 this week next week they will commit to 8. Pessimists are a huge commitment to being right.

Optimists tend to be very realistic and analytical in their predictions. If they did 10 they will offer perhaps 12 or maybe 13 for their production for next week. Optimists also have an underlying commitment to being right and looking good. The big trouble I see with 'optimists' is if they only do 11 their identity will not allow them to go for more than 11 for a long time after and eventually they tend to work out the same production numbers as the pessimists. Optimists like to be nice and avoid making waves.

Visionaries have a much more exciting mindset. If they did 10 this week they will go for 100 next week. Everyone around them lambasts them for never keeping their promises or having their head in the clouds or not being realistic or worse being egotistical for even thinking they could do 100. However the visionary will often produce 60-70-80-90 and a few will hit the 100 mark. When that happens their next week’s commitment is off the charts! Visionaries always out produce the other groups by 10x or more. One visionary is worth a dozen of any other group.

Who do I want to be? Who do I want to play with and hang out with? Visionaries are exciting and inspiring. Visionaries in a group make waking up on purpose exhilarating and mandatory.

  7. When I read this wonderful comments, I realise that I haven´t done the 100`s.I should have.I have the aims to do.Sometimes I did.I say I start it now and I do more than yesterday, but it is not enough.
My mom right...I talked to her about something and she answered:Yes, but we don´t know in five, ten years.Maybe it will be better then. And I remembered that she have said that for the latest twenty years.I am raised up with her.I don´t know if she belongs to negative or natural, but she have absolutely no vision.Neither nyone else I have ever known, I guess. Not much of a vision.Maybe some kind of thought about something better than this. But that is all.I realise that the time is NOW to find visionaires.Other than on facebook, blogs and whatever.I want to talk to one.Hear his voice.I did a few times and it was great. No,they are not many.In almost 40 years, I have met maybe 10.Yes, the neutral people...I expect them to have a vision.I put it on them. And when they don´t, I somehow get angry about it!You should have, because you are not stupid!Of course, I never say it.But maybe I say it anyway.Somehow. I think it is a problem of our time. We have to talk about great people, great ideals, great visions and hear about brilliant people or even MEET them when we grow up.But we don´t.Well,it is never too late but so much more difficult...

  8. Hello everybody,

I started consciously thinking about the folks around me a couple years ago. If I believed in embarrassment, it'd be embarrassing to say that. Some lessons take a while, I reckon.

I realized it's best to hang around with folks that have virtues you admire. Kind, Honest (a big one for me), Intelligent, Creative, and Imaginative friends are awesome. I give the rest love from afar. I have a philosophy that allows me to see the good in about anything...but it doesn't mean I need to hang out with liars or dullards. That was judgemental, wasn't it? Oh well. They're out there.

I've found that even on virtual social networking circles, I choose to connect with folks that make me smile when I see them or read what they've said. My friends on Twitter are as awesome as the friends I've had since I was 13. I've learned to filter the groovy ones from the rest. Groovy in, dullards out.

In turn, my friends desire the same things in the folks they hang around with. This circular friendship help all of us stay on target to be the best we can be. It's a good thing. Leads to prosperity (in all areas of our lives), happiness, and great conversations, some of my favorite things.

Thanks to Randy for another though provoking post. Thanks to everybody for sharing their thoughts. May your circle of friends grow ever richer.

  9. Hi Jeanne-I agree with your assessment but want to add something. If it is the truth that only 5% of what we do is a result of our conscious choices and 95% is a result of sub-conscious conditioning, then we have two things to do.
1-Become more conscious of the 95%
2-Take action to feed the sub-conscious with more postivie experiences and people to give ourselves the best chance for success.

In the words of Jim Rohn...and Eric Worre, we are wise to limit association with negative people and influences. We become the average of the 5 people we spend the most time with....so make your 5 HIGHER !!

That's 2 cents (Canadian...so it could be more or less depending on the exchange aret today! LOL)

  10. Hey Dee.
I know nothing about the percentages, but definately agree that becoming more concious of thoughts and feeding the mind truth and possiblity thinking moves us forward.
I also am a big advocate for boundries and choosing surroundings and associations that serve our highest good, but I am still always responsible for my own state of mind, good or bad, no matter who I am with.
    Jeanne

  11. What kind of a people do I surround myself with...? I really started thinking about this - since I was small, it's been the greatest: Dostoyevski, Shaw, Tolstoy, Rand, Mr Gage here, Tolle, N. D. Walsh, Michelangelo, Van Gaugh etc etc. and so many others - they have been my greatest influence in life.
Have you ever spent an evening with a poet, who has such a vision that I get goosebumps even recalling that evening. It does not matter that the poet is on the pages, all that this poet is, is floating around you, inspiring, flirting with you... what a night!
I've lived weeks in royal palaces of St Petersburg with Tolstoy... gone to Wild west with Karl May... endless nights under the stars.
And it is not made-up, every cell of my being believes what I do - I've been there and done that!
Then when it comes to those who are flesh and blood, they are just so entertaining! It's interesting to meed the creatures they live with, even if those creatures are monsters of worry and shame... They maybe there next to me, and trying to show me the shadows of a monster on the wall - but I choose to put my candle on a candle stick for everyone in the house to see that there are no shadows on the wall... and if they still insist, they do it somewhere else, where there is no candle, so they can enjoy the shadow theater... and if there are other candles there around, low and behold - for it becomes fireworks! Life's beautiful!
No one's an obstacle, the greater the shadow master the greater candle master I must be... they are at my service.
But it started with the classics... company I'd suggest to everyone, they hold the vision and have always done it and always will...
Sunshine to you all (and candlelight)

  12. Loving the groove in these comments.

It would be a wonderful world if we could only surround ourselves with positive people.

Then again, who would be there to inspire and lift their thinking and mindset?

I am finding as I network and am a chapter president of a local networking group I do not have choice who comes to the group and there for am surrounded by them. Can I focus on the more positive ones sure. I also choose to give the ones who could use a mindset boost one when they are around me.

Love to hear how folks find and able to connect with that ideal 5 we hear about when people are just plain ole busy and we all live so far apart from each other.

Love to have a team of visionaries to have fun and feed each other energy.

  13. hi Randy! hey that post you've just wrote is simply amazing and a sign of a real turning point in my life. see, i'm only 22, but chronological age doesn't mean anything if you're mature and posses a very strong and word based prosperity mindset. i still live wth my parents, but guess what, many times, i kinda feel illegal in their home due to my own experience, academic knowledge and social skills - besides the fact that, unfortunatelly - they are completely against my self-success if i can call it that way. believe me, i cannot stand it any longer. I keep praying and making the best prosperity maps i can to attract the life i need and want, which is the lifestyle that God my dear Father desires for me.... and yes, they are blockages, and they are annoying. so that's what i wanted to say their most important influence is that they make me loose time Luv ya*

  14. Another encouraging post, Randy.
It is true.. the real danger actually is someone or people who we know love us and care for us, yet their mindset in terms of our vision fulfilment is different from ours and not being helpful as we learn to face the negative influences coming from the world everyday and to keep our faith until we reach our goals. In my case, as with everyone else perhaps... my father (my mother is alive but has lost all her memory of me as her child [sad], but she would have been the very worst one to be protective of me), my older sisters, old good friends who tend to be supportive and protective of me, wanting what is always best for me..by saying 'you don't have to work so hard, you're not dying from poverty, why don't you just take it easy and enjoy life.' They don't pursue or wonder about what else may be there that they don't know, not realizing that they are not being supportive or helpful in a real sense to help fulfill my goals. In a way they are the worst enemies of all to a fulfillment of my vision.

The best way to stay focused and motivated in addition to our spiritual/personal developement, I feel, is to mingle ourselves and communicate with like-minded people whose goals and value system are similar to ours, and getting to know each other well like close friends to love and to care, and continullay support one another. As for me, it always starts with God who is a Creator of the whole universe including me, and if God who created me was the one who planted the desire that He thinks is best for me in me, I know He would sustain me until the day of its accomplishment, as Richard Bach states, 'You are never given a wish without also being given the power to make it come true." So, I look ahead, knowing that I am moving forward with my spiritual eyes open, not looking around what I see and feel with my physican eyes and senses, because I came to believe what is not seen is more real than what is seen...because that is where everything begins, and that is what actually controls what is seen. ...This is what I'm learning, and I like to continue on growing in that reality. Thank you, Randy, for this post that reminds us how important it is to stay tuned with the vision. I really enjoy reading your blog. Enjoy your relaxing Sunday day-off. love and hugs:: -saachi

  15. Wow! This is the best group of comments I've seen so far. One of the reasons I'm broke ( strictly adhering to Randy's definition here ) is that I was lacking a vision for my enterprise. My Business was just happening and I have not been proactive enough to sell more of my wares. I realize now the importance of a vision. Why did they never teach this stuff in Business School? By the way, many Business Professors are Academics and don't have much real world experience. Taking advice and learning from a successful person has much more merit.

  16. Never looked at it that way. I can see where I've been lulled to sleep by some of the people in my circle. I'll be more aware of the neutralizers in my life.

  17. Getting better at choosing my company - whom to spend time with and put my energy into. Like you say - one of the real dangers, is to get stuck with people from the Neutral group. Negative people you could always identify on spot, and stay away from. The neutrals - are kinda more tricky to avoid... they are sort of more "socially accepted" with their you-shouldnt-expect-too-much-more-from-your-life vision.
And yes, it can be real sad when realizing that your closest ones are the ones you have to stay clear from - at least spend less time with... They might not be overtly negative - but, hardly ever very uplifting or supportive... It takes a bit of courage sometimes to speak your own truth...

    All the best /Alex

  18. Yes I have found that associations are the key to moving your life forward. Another is environment in which you find those folks that will support you and help you toward your goals.
