The Powerful Benefits of Ego

Posted By: Randy GageApril 19, 2018

When my Risky Is the New Safe book came out, there was a lot of controversy over the chapter on ego.  I made the case that every successful achiever (business, sports, government, etc.) had a strong ego.  And that ego can be channeled into positive energy.

Many people still have a hard time accepting this today, because ego gets such a bad rap from so many speakers, authors, and others in the self-development space.  They’re missing out on a huge component of becoming successful.

That doesn’t mean ego is always good.  Many times it is hurtful.  But there’s a pretty simply formula to know when it’s good or bad.

When you are channeling ego to develop a stronger sense of self, it’s quite empowering.  It gives you the state of mind to attempt more bold, daring and adventurous things.  And gives you greater confidence that you can achieve them.

Now when your ego is driving you to achieve things in such as way as you become totally oblivious to the good of others – or actually exploiting others to achieve your goals – now you’ve discovered the bad side to be avoided.

That's my take.  What do you think?

  1. Although I agree with this and most of your posts, there is one major problem. Most people delude themselves, and are unable to be self-reflective and objective about themselves. That is why we have counselors and psychologists. Once someone realizes he or she has a problem with their ego, it's usually too late. The damage is done and the behavior has become habitual. This goes with any of the other 6 deadly sins. Humans are very poor at self analysis and self correction. I can give you example after example but I think you get the gist of what I'm trying to convey here. The only way someone can change detrimental or wrong behavior is for a person or persons close to him or her (I believe you refer to this as a tribe) to point it out to the offender. And the offender has to be able to look at the criticism with an open mind and make the necessary changes, which most people do not have the ability nor the desire to do.

  2. It is when we can let ego go that we gain real strength, otherwise it is a false strength based on faulty perceptions of oneself. Many people think they are strong but it is based on seeing others as weak, which allows them to feel superior, but it is a false image they have fashioned for themselves. We are not who we think we are, as much as we would like to believe this illusion, it is just not true. We have to go beyond ego and have what is called a 'direct experience' to be able to see our eg and the tricks it plays. This is not to discount our ego's as it's sole aim is survival, but it comes at a big cost - it keeps us on the safety of a treadmill which goes nowhere. When we can contact our own Beingness then we can witness our ego playing out it's story. Transcending our story is to be in the position of evolving and to know the joy of freedom.

  3. Without EGO, I think is no possible to have enough energy to go for the dreams. Somebody without EGO.... is like a dead person.
