The Power of Resolutions

Posted By: Randy GageMay 15, 2011

Making a resolution is the way you direct and harness your personal power to the completion of a goal. No great accomplishment is done without first a resolution being made.

A life without resolutions is a life without aims. And a life without aims is a faltering, drifting and unstable existence. A person with resolutions is someone moving forward; following a path to prosperity.

When you make a resolution, it’s because you’re not satisfied with the ways things are, and have envisioned something better. You are disciplining yourself, taking yourself in hand, with a vision of who you can become.

The most prosperous people don’t wait for New Year’s Eve to make resolutions. They’re making them all the time. Making a resolution today is the first step to walking a higher path tomorrow.

So what’s your process for making resolutions and how well does it work for you? Please share your thoughts below, and next post we’ll explore deeper what that looks like.

  1. I am a self-proclaimed self-help junkie but can't ever stick to anything for long and I sabotage everything I try to do! I am currently reading a fascinating book by Brian Tracy call the Power of Self Discipline and it has helped me A LOT for the longest I've ever stuck with anything, but I fall all the time!! any advice???

    1. One typically doesn't stick with something for many possible reasons. One main one is that we are constantly looking for evidence that whar we are doing is working. This is a fatal mistake in the creation process. 99% of creation happens without seeing evidence, which typically appears at the end. Right now I am looking out the windows of my office at the beautiful trees in full bloom. Just a few weeks ago, they looked barren, like nothing was happening. Did they just suddenly bloom? Of course not. There was tremendous work going on behind the scenes for months. The trees didn't give up, they weren't worried and stressed out, no one was praying for them and they weren't doing affirmations. They were just being a tree, perfectly supported in all ways, trusting and knowing all was well, CERTAIN they would bloom in good time.

  2. Hi Randy,

I set daily resolutions and take breaks on the hour to see if I'm sticking to them.

Our feelings change quite a bit: important to monitor and shift them continually to ensure we're aligned with our resolutions.

    All the best!

    RB

  3. Решения, которые мы принимаем каждый день, ведут нас к цели. Правильные они, или нет - мы видим по скорости достижения цели!

  4. Randy,

Great post! Making resolutions for me is important. One of the things I do typically is make decision before I have all the details. If its a good direction, I make the decision to do it, I then focus on how I will carry it out. I tend to be a excel kind of guy and empty my brain into a spreadsheet. This helps me think through how to carry out my decision.

  5. What a timely post. Yesterday was the Geneva marathon. I went to see the finish and I so wished I had participated. I train quite a lot and wrongly thought I wasn't trained enough to do it. However when I saw some of the older and overweight and out of shape participants who crossed the finish line I thought - how often do I disqualify myself when I am perfectly capable? It would have been so much fun to participate. I resolved then and there to enter the Geneva triathlon this summer. I am being more and more convinced that it is better to do something not perfectly than not to do something perfectly. I am really excited about having this objective and it will add a whole new dimension to my training now. This weekend I also resolved to give another " The Science of Getting Rich " seminar in June, which I have beeen putting off for ages and also - wait for it - to spend time with Randy Gage this year. So why did I wait so long to make these resolutions? Because of the underlying doubt. I have resolved to eliminate all doubt and replace it with trust and faith. Faith and trust in myself and in God/universe conspiring on my behalf. What a great team!

  6. When speaking of a resolution, one must consider what kind of resolution one is making.

A resolution could be a firm determination to do something, or is could be to settle or find a solution to a problem, dispute, or contentious matter.

The former tends to rigidity, the latter flexibility.

I think resolution is something most of us do on a daily basis whether we are aware of it or not.

    Have a great day
    Jason

  7. My name is Mrs. H&P, and I am ... irresolute. Good to know.

What a Hot Topic, Randy! So often when I read the responses to your postings, I am struck by the number of us whose responses reflect a complacent, "I'm there already" attitude.
This time, however, you've struck a chord. Resolution is characteristic of Successful People. Many of us are willing to admit, "I'm not there yet".
The first step towards change is to admit that we need to change. I've been studying Successful People (SP) for several years now, but I had No Idea that I need to adopt Resolution! I am so appreciative that you've pointed this out!!!!!
I can hardly wait for the next post, in which you promise to "go deeper" into this Characteristic of SP.
What IS "Resolution"? How can I become more Resolute, how do I foster it in myself?

  8. Hi this reply is for Monica.

I know where you are coming from, and the books by Brian Tracy are Brilliant. He is a Genius, just like Randy Gage.

From my own experience, the reason I didn't succeed for a long time is this. Books and Self-Help C.D's, and material, are all absorbed through our Conscious Mind. Unfortunately a lot of our "Negative Programming", comes from the beliefs we hold in our "Subconscious Mind". A blog is not the place to write a whole book about this subject. But for now, just keep believing in yourself. And do lots of Positive Self-Affirmations.............
" I AM.............................." This will be a start. Repetition is the master key of learning. Have patience. Subconscious Beliefs that have been with you for 20 years or more, are not going to be erased in a matter of days. It takes time. Believe in yourself, and be True to Your Self. Live in Abundance, Jasun

    1. My observation is that "I am" statements can work, however, rarely do, as what you say must be believable to your subconscious mind. If you're affirming, "I am rich" when you are broke, your subconscious is screaming, "No you're not!" Only affirm that which you believe. A good step is "I've decided...," "I am willing to...'" or "It my intention to..." If "I am" statements worked, the whole New Thought community would be happy, healthy and rich. 🙂

    2. 3 things:

      1. One of the really useful uses for I Am affirmations is that they bring to the surface heretofore unnoticed neg. ideas & beliefs. Once we are aware of 'em, we can begin clearing them. If we aren't aware, we can't do the clearing work, and they just go on running (or ruining) our lives.

      2. For more subconscious acceptance of the I AM affirmation, say, "I Am in the Process of....."

      3. Instead of the I AM affirmation, begin asking the Power Questions: "How can I (become more prosperous/succeed at what I am doing/become more Resolute.....etc)".

  9. Randy,
I have a confusion, resolutions are the same as a goal? I always read about the importance of goals to achieve what you want in life, but I must recognize that most of time I start with a lot of energy to work on it, I keep doing for a while, but finally I desist. I think it is a problem of lack of motivation, and it's that that I must work first, is that what you mean by resolution?

    Kisses,

    Ximena

  10. Hi, Randy,

It seems to me that resolution and commitment are closely related.

I remember what a teacher of mine told me years ago about commitment:

"Commitment is doing what you said you were going to do long after the feeling that you had when you said that has passed."

Hey--for all I know that quote may have originated with Jim Rohn!

Still, that has been a great guide for my life so far.

  11. Yes, I agree with the others about the timeliness of this post. I have been resisting working on the verbal investor presentation for my early stage company due to fear, which in turn leads nowhere. So now I will resolve to get it done and move ahead with attracting investors that seek an amazing investment in a company that will transform many things for people globally.

I seem to easily manifest certain things in my Life, and sometimes it's almost second nature. What I have to look at is what I'm resisting in order to ALLOW myself my birthright which is Prosperity.

So thanks again Randy. I'm grateful you bring my attention to making a resolution to achieve my goals. And I have set very high ones too.. Why not? There's no limit to what we can achieve in Life!

  12. When making resolutions, the easiest thing to do after time has passed is to change and adjust when the road gets a little bumpy. All you are really doing is lowering your expectations. Then you look to justify why you changed course, and try to convince yourself it's ok to settle for something less than your original desire. I read something simple recently on resolution and commitment, I believe it was from Gary Ryan Blair. I find this to the point and powerful.
If you make a commitment - honor it
If you make a promise - keep it
If you set a goal - achieve it

  13. I believe that if a resolution is not strong enough, it's because the dream is not big enough. Procrastination is a very strong enemy, but only for small dreams. If the dream is big, nothing can stop a determined human mind!

  14. You cannot relate the weakness of a resolution to the dreams. Me myself, I have really big plans and dreams, but I guess I am stuck in between them. Whenever I try to do something big, there is always "He" or "She" or "That". I guess I am still in that part of the life when I've been constantly complaining on other's people busynesses.. If a dream is big or not, it doesn't matter. It's just a dream. You need to get your hands dirty.

  15. Hi Randy,

I have a personal question for you.

You decide become the prosperity mentor or you just start acting in that direction?

I have a dream Randy and have nobody to guide me. I would like to hear some clues.

    Andres Lee
