The Power of Concentration

Posted By: Randy GageSeptember 1, 2009

Concentration.  Seems like a simple enough concept.  But how often do you forget about it?

Do you get distracted into too many projects at once?  Do you start something then get a little bored so you start the next one?  How many times is your work distracted by email, Twitter or chat requests?

Sometimes the new thing seems like the sexy thing.  But the smart move would be to concentrate on and finish the current thing.  And some projects would get done a lot quicker if you turned off the email, social media and other distractions until you finished them.

So how are you doing on that?

  1. I agree - but the question is how to do this. I start with simple steps - list of projects to complete separated by "connected time" - still its very hard not to get distracted, especially on Twitter b/c it has so many interesting people!

  2. Absolutly right!!I Think that concentration is a power tool for atraction law, if you are really concentrated in the things you want and you take action(because you are concentrated) then you get it

  3. Oddly enough, it's what I just wrote about on my blog this very morning, Randy.

    And you know what? It took a LOT of energy for me to sit and write the post from beginning to end. It wasn't even that long!

    But I was totally aware of the urge to get up and do a whole bunch of other things after writing sentence or two.

    I'm doing a 90 day experiment in regards to focus.

    I'm going to focus on completing at least ONE task a day from begining to end in regards to my business.

    I'm hoping to accomplish two things here. One, improve my focus, and two grow my business.

    I'll keep you posted. 😉 Thank you for you.

  4. I was totally gonna write a long thing about this but then.....

    Hey- I was JUST thinking about concen....

    Have you seen that trailer for Avatar? I saw 15 minutes in 3D last week, and....

    Yes, I woke up thinking of all the different directions I pull myself in, and I could use a little discipline here!

  5. I think you are right, we have many distractors , we need to focus as a laser . I need to concentrate in the activities that give me the outcomes that I need to reach my goals. We need to check our daily activities and say no to the distractors.

  6. You have smacked me between the eyes again. I feel like a rabbit, hopping around and never finishing anything. There's always so many wonderful things to do on top of the things I HAVE to do. It is exhausting/frustrating. I like the idea of setting a timer and not doing anything else until the timer goes off.
    Thanks for the reminder.

  7. I'm not distracted, I'm multi-tasking! I used to think I was all alone until one day someone said to me "I couldn't contact you!"
    I responded with: "I have 2 secretaries, voicemail, e-mail a fax
    and I'm on twitter" Hey, I'm just waiting for the next twit, tweet, fax, VM, VOIP or send me a smoke signal. Then it dawned on me how distracting all these technological breakthroughs can be.
    Oops I gotta go I fogot I also have a pager and it's paging me 🙂

  8. In Denmark we have a saying;
    "You are soo right - you should be shot" 😉

    And I´m even teaching Social Networking TimeManagement - but to "Walk The Talk" is not always as easy as "punking" others, is it :-0)

    Thanks for being here to "punk" me dear Randy !!

    One very simply and effective trick, that I have actually started to use myself too, is NOT TO READ EMAILS IN THE MORNING !!!
    Get the important things done, BEFORE you get side-tracked with a lot of new "sexy things" (as Randy calls it 😉

    Try to have a think EVERY NIGHT;
    Did I invest my time today - or did I just use it?
    Best is to write it down - so that you cannot run from the proof!!

    Happy Lifehackering 🙂

  9. I set a timer for 50 minutes, and work NON STOP until it rings. That means no phone, email, Twitter, or anything like that. No getting up to pee, get a drink...nothing.

    Then I take a 10-20 minute break, and repeat.

    Works like a charm - probably the easiest thing I've EVER done to increase my productivity, and on the days I do it..I bet I get 2-4x as much work done as when I don't do it.

  10. By the way, there is some research that shows 50 minutes is prime concentration for things like writing, then a short break is in order. It comes from states our brain goes through.
