The People in Your Life

Posted By: Randy GageAugust 5, 2010

The last post on what you must do to counter-program against memes created some interesting comments.  Let’s look at little deeper at the issue of the people around you…

Jim Rohn always said your income would be the average of the five closest people around you.  I think the same thing holds true for your health, relationships and everything else.

I had a fascinating experience with this a few years ago when I went back for a visit in my hometown.  The newspaper ran a story on the front page of the business section, with a huge photo of me.  People who had been to my seminars or bought my books tracked me down to connect. Yet none of my past friends from when I lived there did.  And I’m pretty sure why…

Back when I lived there, everyone I hung around with was a professional victim like me.  Since I no longer live in that world, we have nothing in common.

Interestingly enough, I’m developing new friends in the area.  People who are more attuned to the consciousness I am at now.  And that is exciting.  For you and me.

Because as you grow and develop, old things that no longer serve you gradually (or sometimes abruptly) fall away.  And you replace them with people and things that do.

So what do the five people closest to you look like?

- RG

P.S. I’m with my softball team in Cologne, Germany.  Eight years ago in Sydney we won the Silver medal.  Four years ago in Chicago we won the Silver medal again.  Yesterday, we won the Gold.  Thanks for all the support and positive encouragement you guys have been sending on Twitter!

  1. Great article RG,
First, congrats on the Gold! My prayer for you was: God, we may not be able to live with him after the win, but Randy & his team deserve to win BIG! Please enable them to capture the highest achievement ever! I think you know by now, I am sincere in wishing you the best!

I almost can't go back to my hometown. When I was "yanked" to move from La, God began disassociating me toward the people around me. Did this happen overnight? No! From childhood, I never developed city-limit mentality, never made mediocrity my BFF, and kissed status quo good bye years ago. I gained new information about an entirely different culture of successful, forward minded thinkers and I knew I belonged in that realm.

When I go back, it is almost like I need to be decontaminated with a shower like people take who are exposed to bio hazardous toxic waste.
    Make sense?

I refer to one of my fav quotes of yours...."I release those things that no longer serve me." While this may be painful at first, it does become easier.

Thanks for being one of the people in my "realm!"

  2. Randy,
Congratulations on winning the gold, you must be so proud.
Like you, trying to reconnect with old friends does seem like a waste of valuble time. Undoubtable, I find we no longer have things in common.

  3. This post reminds me of a concept that Blue Engine (Sandler Sales Institute) trainer John Maxwell taught me.

He said that on a scale of 1-10, whatever number you view yourself (subconscioulsly), say a 6, that you will unknowingly fight to keep yourself at that level...

Meaning you will fight to keep yourself feeling comfortable with the status quo. Your income, the way you live, the people you associate with, you attract into your life to keep yourself at that same level.

By becoming aware of that fact, you can make conscious choices to break out of your comfort zone and reach new levels of success.

    Very good post! Thank you.

    1. Very simple concept yet very profound. If we're operating at a 6, then step up to a 7. Then step up to an 8. A professional once told me the sub -concious is a very powerful influence upon us. It's worth it to take the time and repogram it.

  4. I agree with you and Jim Rohn that people in our life do influence us. who we will become, what we will get, who we will marry, who will be our friends and what will be our life-style or standard of living. Prior to undertaking personal development, I used to have victim friends but now those victim friends are no longer in touch with me. I used to think they forgot me but later I understood that I had moved forward, I had grown up and made a substantial progress in my consciousness. Old friends do fade away as we gain greater consciousness. The spiritual laws of prosperity do work and I am glad I came to know you. Thanks for posting your articles, and videos.

  5. What you say is so true, I wrote on your last post that all my friends have changes, I believe that I am still in the process of change. I am changing everyday, I have even started to search and learn about spiritual gorwth and I feel that what I have found is what I was looking for.

  6. Randy,

Great post and congratulations. The 5 closest people to me are people who are my partner Joey, my friends in Unity, my parents, my acting coach... Besides Joey I don't have people I see everyday that I have long conversations with. I have recently joined a group called the Millionaire Mindset and we are all pretty positive.

  7. Hey Randy congrats on the gold... I guess I'm lucky I got 4 or 5 good friends from my teens that are still with me as I hit 50 and we cheer each other on.. we don't care how rich or poor ya get... always have a great time when we get together or call...
A side note, a female columnist posted the theory, when that stinker Sex and the City 2 came out, that women like it because it shows that myth of great female friendship... I posted, I couldn't agree more... ask a woman how many friendships she's got that are more than 5 years old and don't be surprised if you get a long silence... and they fall out over the stupidest, petty things...

  8. Randy,

Congratulations to you and your team on the gold!

Great article... It is interesting to see how your circle of influence can change your life.

A lot of people hold themselves back because they are afraid to leave some of the old gang behind.

And another observation that I have had, that is certainly an exception, is someone watching you make an improvement in your life and using your example to improve their lives.

    Keep up the great work!

  9. Randy,

Congratulations on winning. Being in the thick of it had to be an incredible experience no words will ever come close to sharing.

When I first began my study of the Law of Association my group included the poorest of the poor and people who will never run out of money no matter how fast they spend it. I was somewhere in the middle to lower bottom. I could relate to everyone and did not understand the complaints of either however.

The last couple years the unhappy poor people have disappeared. The hearts of gold have remained true and I understand their commitments to excellence better now. My recent trip to the USA for the first time in 3 years was interesting and fun.

Maybe it was me but the TSA was really great and fun. Both Miami and Chicago had TSA going out of their way to assist people and reduce the stress of traveling. Madison was like walking into a time machine and coming out in 1960 everywhere people were welcoming, friendly and overtly generous. The return trip was equally affirming.

  10. I actually don't have many close friends - mostly just acquaintances as I don't really enjoy spending a lot of time with most of the people I know.

The five closest people to me include a police officer, a couple of teachers, an IT project manager and a full time mother. Three of them are overweight and two are in great shape and eat well. Two earn more than I do and two earn less. The full time mother is the one who is on the same track as me mentally speaking, but she's not as close as she was many years ago.

Congratulations on your softball achievement Randy. Great stuff!!!

  11. Congrats on the Gold, Randy! And another great post.
Since I've been studying & working on improving myself I've lost touch with many of my old friends. I've grown tired of their lack mentality & victim roles. At first I felt a little guilty about it but not any more. I'm making new friends & being quite selective too, about who I'm choosing to spend my time with.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom & your time with us, Randy.

  12. Wow, I haven't commented in a while! By the way, congrats on winning the Gold! You deserve it!
Ok, well since I have been getting more involved with my opera company's development, people I need are coming out of the woodwork. Singers mostly but everyone knows someone else who can help. What's interesting is the person who professed to be my best friend from high school barely speaks to me these days. We had kind of a falling out last October. We got over it and moved on but things are not the same. I am not the same person when we first met. She hasn't changed all that much. At least I don't think so. We have grown in different directions. She still needs me to tell her it's ok to be a victim in all her daily drama. I refuse. So, she has found new friends to feed that need in her. I have moved on to dealing with the daily needs of growing an opera company from the ground up and still working my day job. I'm doing ok. I am blessed! And no playing victim!!

  13. I had a very strange experience some days ago.One teacher in my sons school had written a bad, unlogical letter to me about things I did wrong according to the rules of the school.I was chocked, even shaking, and angry decided to phone her directly and "scream the highest i could about how crazy she was going over the limits of what is allowed".When I came home I saw a misscall from one of my old friends I had not heard from in long time who remind of this woman in many ways and they both have sons who has been a pain in the as for my son in two different periods of time!
This woman worked at the summer school and is not ordinary my sons teacher!I was shaking because something in me of victimhood was touched, obviously, and it reminded a lot of something I had in the times with that old friend. So strange!
