The I Am

Posted By: Randy GageFebruary 25, 2011

Most of you know I don’t think it’s my job to convert people to a particular religious belief.  However I believe the Bible is a great prosperity textbook, offering many insights on living an abundant life.  So as I have been recovering from the worst cold/mung/flu I ever had, I was reflecting on the importance of the words we use.  Unless you are careful it’s pretty easy to take God’s name in vain.  But maybe not in the you may think…

In the Bible passage where he was called to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, Moses asked God what he should say if people asked his name.  God replied, “I am who I am.”  He also said, ‘Thus you shall say to the Israelites, “I am has sent me to you.”’

We know that Infinite Intelligence and us are one and the same.  God, Infinite Intelligence, I am, or whatever label you may use to name It, is omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent.  ‘I am’ cannot be sick, depressed, weak, poor, or negative in any way.

So if we follow this train of thought that God’s name is “I am,” every time we say, “I am sick,” “I am depressed,” or “I am weak,” we are speaking God’s name in vain.

Anytime we use 'I am' to affirm a negative we are speaking in error.  Carrying it to the logical extension, if we speak the ‘I am’ falsely, we will manifest false results.  Affirming “I am sick’ will bring you sickness, just as “I am poor” will get you poverty.

20 years ago I would have thought this was foolish semantics.  Today I have no doubt that such power goes with the speaking of these words.

So what are you affirming?

  1. Randy-

I find this post very timely and actually a God send. Today was a day where someone, my boss, was affirming me to be something that I am not. I was devastated, sad and exhausted until I was driving home and thought to myself, "I am not that person. I am who I am. I am stronger than that." Such a critical piece in our progress to turn the tables on the words of others and stay true to what we believe.

I have found your insights, and JB Glossinger's insights, to be a great guide on this life journey. Thank you. Feel better!

  2. OMG... thank you for this post today - it's exactly what thie "i am" needed to hear today... another who got "sick" this past week... thanks for the reminder to shift my thinking and mindset...

very much with much light, (((o)))

  3. Hi Randy,...this is the Best of your Writings! And, on a personal note,...I AM glad to hear you were reading the Bible!...for whatever Reason!!

  4. what a different way to be aware of taking the Lord's name in vain. I have thought that if I don't like myself, then I am not at one with my Creator for He created me in His image... Definitely will choose my words more wisely.

  5. Like this. I am an eternal spiritual being, and have a body to act in this material univers. And I am is just a inflexion of to be, and that is why it is so powerful, just to be, isn't it?

  6. RG,

The one I have to watch is "I'm sorry".John Maxwell Taylor was just at our church and did an experiment. When you said "I am Jim" and he tried to push down on your extended arm it sank quickly. When you said "I am that I am" he was unable to move you. The power is there. He said when he introduces himself he says, "My name is John, instead of I am John".
It is not antics with semantics, it is what I affirm myself to be.

    I am tired - I need rest.
    I am sorry - I made a mistake
I am broke - Money is on its way.
These are some of the changes I am watching.
    Thanks,
    Jim Story

  7. "I am who I am", God said that? I kept thinking it was Popeye.:) Anyway, Poor Randy, I am sorry you were sick. I wondered what happened to you, I was just hoping you were busy. What's mung?

Do you know Martin Buber? After I read your post I kept thinking about Martin Buber and the I-Thou relationship.

Randy, I agree about us being a part of infinite intelligence. But, what if God isn't omniscient, and omnipotent? What if God is in part sick and weak and poor? If we believe we are made in God's image perhaps God is all of those things too.

Not that I want to make God sound bad, it's just that there is a time for everything. And truly there are blessings in being sick, weak and poor. All of those things come with certain blessings. They are not all always and completely negative. For instance, sometimes when sickness happens, we also get much needed rest, or we are blessed with a new surprising insight we didn't have before.

Hope you keep feeling better. I can tell by your longer post you must be better.

    1. Mung is that ick feeling! No I haven't heard of Martin Buber. My belief is the Infinite Intelligence omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipotent, because i it wasn't true, the universe would be weak at its most important link.

      1. Oh, sorry about your mung then. I hope you will look up Martin Buber he is a German philosopher and theologian. His famous theory involves the "I-Thou" relationship and the "I-it" relationship. (it's all about human relation to God and the world) Read, read you will like it.

I like that you are always positive Randy, and definitly if not affirming sickness prevents or cures it, then I will try this too.

However, I was just thinking if God is us and we get sick, which is just the truth, it must be a part of God. So, if that is true maybe all those things you mentioned are also positive in some way.

I don't know that opens a whole existence of God debate. I think God is probably all those O words too. I just like to think
if we can't always control what happens to us, then we can at least find a positive in those challenges.

  8. "Be impeccable with your word" the first of The Four Agreements as written by don Miguel Ruiz.
The word is vibration, thoughts made audible and have the power of creation.

This is a great post Randy. Thanks for sharing this valuable insight.

    I AM loving,
    I AM deserving,
    I AM abundant,
    I AM perfect.....

  9. I you're not what this life experience caused you to desire(become) then you don't SEE the complete you. You didn't come yet to full appreciation of YOU(GOD)... it's ok.. you'll get there.. it's inevitable.

  10. I am feeling blessed, excited, connected to an unlimited supply of ideas! That is what I am experiencing and affirming.

I believe the quality of our thoughts and emotions actually come off of us into the atmosphere around us..I believe this because I feel it from others and can feel it when they leave the room.

This morning my cat lay beside me and the feeling he gave off became translated into a lucid dream, an idea of how important it is to have happy people in your home and how children playing can actually bring in warmth.

"I am" is dreaming and we are the catchers and translators of the dreams. Such fun!

    1. btw, Randy, just watched the new prosperity seminar and am feeling very grateful to have you as a teacher in my life. It's so refreshing!

  11. The Rev. Ike taught this very same message. We must use extreme caution in what we add to "I Am" Whatever follows I am is what you become.
BTW, if you read Genesis 1:26 it states; Then God said, "Let US make man in OUR image, according to OUR likeness.....
US? OUR? Just how many are up there? That's where I believe it answers the above question that we are one in the same with God which is not used singularly here.
    have a beautiful day! 🙂

  12. The mung got up to Ct. too. This blog reminds me of how impactful and strong words are on our conscious and subconscious mind.

  13. Hi Randy,

I too recently released a bout of dis-ease. Affirming non-stop helped me to return to my natural state of ease.

"I am" is that powerful and really, it is THE only power.

    Thanks for sharing.

  14. I've been reading the Bible lately also. I see nothing that conflicts with being in a state of absolute freedom and bliss. It's ironic, because so many people associate it with guilt and fear.

What I see is that we can be nothing other than freedom and prosperity, love and abundance. These are not qualities we possess. They're what we are. The I am is quality-less. It simply is. You are timeless and pure. How can you be something other than what you are?

Will you stand back and allow the I am to simply be? Or will you stand in the way and live in a state of fragmentation? Either way, you're free. But you have the opportunity to manifest this freedom in your life, so you can enjoy it and so others can see it as well.

To me, this is true leadership and prosperity...acting as a mirror so that others can taste and see the opportunity of their own realization.

  15. We have to fully understand that we are a piece of God that has chosen to incarnate as an individual. There is no separation from who we are, it's just our mind telling us something different.

  16. I am growing in confidence and courage with each moment that passes.
I am sharing my time, knowledge and enthusiasm with people who appreciate my it.
I am becoming the person that God intended me to be, but I was too afraid to be before.
Thanks for provoking this in me Randy.
    Roisin.
    Be well.

  17. Hi Randy,

I am an amateur of Bible and at the present comparing Bibles written in English and Russian. And as you know some words maybe interpreted differently. As a result, I found the meaning of "I AM who I AM" somewhat different.

I understand what you mean by negative thoughts and expressions of those thoughts affirmed or spoken starting with "I am" are harmful to our psyche. It does make sense to affirm positive, I do it all the time and it works every time.

Believing that we are part of God or Infinite Intelligence, e.g., linked by energy or spirit, or that our soul, perhaps is an extension of God, is one thing. But to say that we are "one and the same", to me means that we are God, which is not right. In no shape or form are we God.

"I AM who I AM" or "I AM that I AM" means that God exists but not in material form, God is not a spirit and God is not a being. God exists by himself independently of everything. God is good. God is invisible. God is infinite.

"I AM has sent me to you" means that God spoke through Moses. Moses was a messenger of God's instructions.

To me, taking God's name in vain would be to say that "I am God", "I am like God", "I am greater than all".

    What do you think?

    1. I think you'd get a lot of people to agree with you. Personally I believe that we are all living extensions of God. God can only do for us what He/She can do through us.

      -RG

      1. P.S.
        Randy,
I am glad that you are healthy again.

I often wonder why people allow themselves to get sick. For instance, doctors and nurses are surrounded by every germ in existence, and their immune system is the same as everyone else's, yet they don't get sick.

        Any thoughts?

        1. I think when your resistance and immune system, are high, you can be around lots if sick people and it doesn't affect you. But when we let them wear down, that's when we get in trouble.

          -RG

    2. Victoria, you might like to read Martin Buber too. He was a Jewish bible scholar and philosopher. He gave a realy interesting theory about our relationship to God.

      1. All sort of philosophies have come out of 'Bible Teachers' and scholars..except u are about to believe everything...some times its confusing which is which...well the stories of Jesus and His ideals have been philosophized into all sorts of plausible theories. Man must thou believe all that is said?

  18. I always used the "I am" statement as an affirmation, like your new perspective on that. I can't tell you how many times it has worked! Like before The Big Event I affirmed "I am Going to meet Randy Gage" and we did, me and little Buckeye! Next time I will be more specific and say I will get to visit with and get to know better... Randy Gage or whatever else I really want to accomplish. Let's see how being more specific can be a lot more powerful! 🙂

  19. Randy, I liked your post. It made me feel happy today. I hope you look up Martin Buber. I think I studied him when we were doing a unit on existential theory in personality theory class.

When I thought about the "I am" statement, I thought then we should never speak badly of ourselves or anyone else because we are all "I Am". Martin Buber said the "I-thou" relationship was the path to love. The "I-it" although necessary could be the path that leads one to do evil. I think that might be right. "I-thou" was the person to God relationship. "I-It" was the person to object relationship.

One more thing I really liked about Martin Buber, was he theorized that when a person brought art into the world like music or dance or theatre it was an expression of God's essence. I just really liked that since I was a theatre major too. So, when you write, you can think about the fact that you may be bringing God's essence into the world. 🙂

  20. While saying "I am sick" is not a great idea, how about saying "I have a cold"?

"I have..." feels like distancing myself from the malaise (is good!)
"I am ..." feels like I am (oops) wallowing in it.

Am I correct in saying that the point is: Use "I am" for gooood stuff.
If we are in the doc's office, for example, and so called upon to yak about the negative, we could phrase it differently.

I believe that, unless I have a really good reason to chat about anything that doesn't feel good (ie, that is negative), it behooves me to zip my lip on the topic.

Would you agree, or is that just 'bottling up the negative'? Feedback appreciated!

    1. I am also working on this too. (knowing how to be aware of all but only giving attention to goals).

      Example:
If something negative is dark...we shine the light (awareness)on it and hopefully doing that helps us to understand it better. If we understand it better than we can affirm it in it's higher form. And then we are shining light (attention) on it's higher form no longer it's lower negative form of expression.

  21. While i can appreciate what you are trying to say; you have an elementary understand of Scripture. Go to the Hebrew of I AM and you will see that what you are saying is way off. The revelation of the ineffable name "I AM WHO AM" contains then the truth that God alone IS. The Greek Septuagint translation of the Hebrew Scriptures, and following it the Church's tradition, understood the divine name in this sense: God is the fullness of Being and of every perfection, without origin and without end. All creatures receive all that they are and have from him; but he alone is his very being, and he is of himself everything that he is.

  22. I can appreciate what you are saying and that we must speak in a positive manner and using positive "I am" statements as it also says in the Bible that there is "life and death in the power if the tongue" but there is only One "I Am" period!!!

Praying for you for speedy and complete healing, Randy!

    God Bless,

    Kimber

  23. Amazing how little we take into account our own responsibility for the WORDS we speak & think. Just like the force of Gravity, it causes results whether or not we believe it. I AM Creative, I AM blessed and a blessing to others, I AM sharing, I AM enjoying life!

      God Bless,

      Kimber
