The Holy Trinity of Prosperous Thinking

Welcome to another savory edition of Friday Filosophy – the weekly postcard where I challenge you to think about what you think about.  Today why don’t we explore some of the thought processes that lead to success and prosperity.  My “go to” traits are the holy trinity of curiosity, discipline, and discernment.  Let’s look at each of them…

Curiosity should come as no surprise, because it creates the passion for learning.  Growing up poor instilled me with jealousy and bitterness toward rich people. That subconscious programming (that I had no idea existed) led me to repeatedly self-sabotage my success.  Somewhere along my self-development path, my jealousy about wealth transformed into curiosity about it.  When I got curious about how people became wealthy, I realized there was no need to resent wealthy people because I could become one.

The most intellectually developed people are usually the most curious.  If you want to grow and develop, you must maintain your child-like curiosity about the world around you.   Now just being curious is not enough, however. You also need the second trait, discipline.

Casual curiosity will lead you to investigate things that have superficial interest for you.  That’s a positive step because it ignites a spark of learning.  But learning of real substance requires discipline. Discipline gives you the initiative to go deeper – to study things that may not seem as intriguing at first but offer you potential for great breakthroughs. No one ever had a major breakthrough in their comfort zone, and you won’t be the first. Breakthroughs – prosperity or otherwise – come from stretching your brain around fresh concepts, gaining knowledge, and developing new thought processes.  But just being exposed to enlightening material is not enough.  You must employ the third trait, discernment.

Intelligent people realize everything presented to them (including this blog) comes shaded with some bias. When you’re exposed to new information, you must process it through your powers of discernment.  This means the ability to form opinions by objectively evaluating the information presented to you.  That process involves questioning the premise, evaluating the source, and thinking about what bias or motives that source may have.   This ability is what allows you to make good judgments.

And that leads us to a bonus trait, one that can enhance the benefits of the first three.  Sometimes you have to see the world in a totally different way than the masses and be a contrarian.

Far too many people today are going through the motions of life, existing but not really living.  You can’t think like them or you’ll end up being like them.  Don’t be afraid to act contrary to what everyone seems to be doing.  In fact, be concerned if you’re not.
