The Greater Good – Not!

Posted By: Randy GageDecember 21, 2008

Zhannur deduces correctly that the words I choose are meant to shake people up and cause them to do some serious thought.  My work is not designed for the herd, but critical thinkers.  (A while back I was approached to write a “--- for Dummies” book.  I declined, on the grounds that I have no desire to write for dummies.

Zhannur feels though that I am undervaluing the meaning of living for the greater good.  I have a hard time with that, because “greater good” seems to be such an impossibility, kind of like “a thoughtful response from President Bush.”  The two are so diametrically opposite I have a hard time reconciling them.

For Zhannur to live for the greater good is not meant to sacrifice your own happiness. But rather multiply and grow together and individually.  Ayn Rand has some brilliant insights on this in an interview she did a long time ago with Mike Wallace.  Watch it here.

If I go along with the conceptual idea of a greater good, I will still say that it comes from each person living their life by having a higher purpose of their own happiness.  And everyone making sure their own needs are met, is what ultimately makes the world a safe, livable and prosperous place.

  1. Randy, I am admired with all things you tell us in your books; because you open my eyes and explain every detail, every negative believe. You are good at writing books. You help a lot of people to seize prosperity. Thank you for that.

Can I ask question that is very important for me? If you answer it, you will help me a lot.

I live in Moscow; I want to become a millionaire in 8 years. I am 17 year-old guy. Now I am living with my parents.

I want to change the way I am thinking and it seems that I have made a progress. In a short period of time I believed that I would achieve what I wanted, the picture was very clear, it was inspiring me, giving me a lot of energy and I was doing a lot of actions in my business (MLM).

Now my problem is that I am still surrounded with some sources of negative programming, this very often prevents me (to my mind) from prosperity.

-my parents are middle class people and have some brain viruses. Sometimes my mum does not understand me and criticizes me not directly because I want to become a millionaire but because she sees like I do not talk to her, I do not pay much attention to her. She says I am rude with her. Moreover, my parents still have an influence on me.

-and one more issue involves people, who surround me in my college. Teachers are sick, dump and broken they give information in negative way and I have to learn it. Most pupils are also not prosperous, only some of them have good self-appraisal, because they have rich parents. But these students still have a lot of negative programming, because they are under the influence of the mass media. It is hard not to communicate with all of them. And I feel that this often pulls me down.

So, I want to become a millionaire, but people, surrounding me are all not millionaires, even my mentors in MLM-company have nearly $1500 monthly income (in Moscow it is rather good especially when it is passive income), but still none of these people is millionaire. They also watch TV, read newspapers etc.

How would you recommend me to surround myself with successful, rich, prosperous, positive people, who can influence me? How to get rid of all negative programming and replace it with positive? Maybe I need one more or another mentor; can I become your student?

    Thank you for any information.

  2. Hi Levon,

These are issues not really related to this post, but certainly ones that apply to many readers of the blog. So I will try to address them in some upcoming posts. Thanks, RG

  3. Can I add to my demands of what I'd love you to address, Dear Randy?

How do levels development affect thinking in relationship to Libertarian thought? And how would Integral being shift perspective?

    😉

And what do you reckon is the difference between masculine and feminine propestity and how to welcome it in, while still being in the radiance of feminine, rather than masculine drive...

    Ta!

  4. Request night - cool... I have more 😉 Just to keep you on your toes...

I think you coulda probably guessed that by now tho! 😉 tee hee...

You know what I'd love on your blog - when someone responds to a post - then we get an alert so we don't need to check back... so it just happens automatically...

    Do you get alerts?

    Thanks Randy!

  5. You say: It comes from each person living their life by having a higher purpose of their own happiness.

By having a higher purpose of your own happiness - is that all? Really?

Would you feel happier when your wife is happy too? Would you feel even more happier when your kids are so happy when they see you, and when they see you and your wife really loving each other...

Is your own happiness is all you want? Is that really true?

  6. When I pursue my own hapiness, that will automatically evoke hapiness in other people's lives. Because you have shared "hapiness goals".

Spending quality time with my girlfriend makes me happy. I'm sure it makes her happy too. By making myself happy, she gets happy. Which makes me happy, etc.

I live 6,000 miles away from my parents. My home-based Internet business gives me the time and money freedom to visit them whenever I want, for as long as I want. Me reaching my goal of becomming a self-made millionare made me happy for various reasons. And I'm sure my parents are happy too that I can visit them so often.

A while ago I went for a midnight stroll in Calgary. At the 7-eleven, I met a homeless guy. He looked like a sharp guy and was 25 years old at the most. We started talking and in the end I went up to my hotelroom to give him a book that's very inspirational to me (actually, a copy that was signed by the author). Giving the book made me happy, because I felt it might inspire him to live a better life for himself. And judging from the look on his face, he was a happy chap too.

I think when you persue you own hapiness, and you have healthy values, you'll make the whole world a better place by pursuing your own hapiness.

What if that homeless young man got back on track? Wouldn't that make his parents happy too? Maybe he ends up being a massage therapist, making 25 people a week happy by relieving them from back pains?

Take care of your own hapiness first, and you will make other people happy by doing so.
