The Freedom of Self Discipline

Posted By: Randy GageJuly 27, 2009

A while back we discussed the paradox that discipline creates freedom.  And self-discipline is the ultimate freedom builder.

I’ve had a simple mantra for many years:

“I will do today what others will not do, so tomorrow I can do what others cannot do.”

It’s what I affirmed when I had to do a task that I would rather put off.   Now I am in a situation where I can go anywhere at almost any time.  Do pretty much anything I want to.  Because I practiced the self-discipline earlier and build up my financial security and independence.

So why not adopt that mantra for yourself, and create the future you really want?

  1. HI Randy,

well said, and yes im going to borrow your mantra, because putting things of or dwelling on thinking how best to do things is definitly something i have to stop doing. After thinking about it i've come to the conclusion that self- discipline is the answer to lots of 'problems', and as i'm spending time recovering from operation and being therefore anable to work and have lots of time to think, i'm spending it on cleaning up my act and self-discipline i need the most, so thanks for the mantra

  2. I have read and thought about this mantra and it is an excellent one. For me it has been helpful to recognize the importance of being really passionate about what you stand for and what you define as your work.

Passionate about what you do for me is very important since even in the areas that I am most passionate about, there are things to be done that are not that exciting even when others are helping.

  3. I just got back from a wonderful weekend with Nickelback (my fav band!). And while the boys are playing, obviously doing what they love, I kept thinking "Whoe has a better lifestyle? Chad Kroeger or Randy Gage?" lol. Either way, nether would be where they are today without self-discipline. That being said, it's time to get off the internet and DO SOMETHING! namaste'

  4. No matter what our lifestyle, our upbringing, or our financial situation, we all have areas with which we would rather not deal. This is an incredible mantra to help focus on what is positive in those negatives .. thank you Randy!

  5. Randy,

Great topic to ponder and contemplate when making desicions.

There is a great book written by a swami on the this topic which goes into a refined study of different ways to have discipline, called "The Yoga of Discipline." Most people, it seems have an idea of discipline as being a "bad" thing, and something to avoid. However, as you stated, the more discipline a person has, the more freedom that person has. It seems like an antithetical concept to freedom, and I've noticed that the more discipline I exert over my own life, the more freedom I experience.

Like Brendan W. I'm going to adopt using your mantra everyday in order to have what others won't have, based on their unwillingness to enact simple daily disciplines.

  6. That's a great mantra Randy. There's a great quote by George Zalucki which I find very helpful and it sort of ties in:

"The definition of commitment is doing the thing you said you would do, long after the mood you said it in has left you" !

  7. Randy,

I am very familiar with that mantra and it is, of course, absolutely true. I think the corollary that most people miss, though, is how vastly oppositional procrastination and discipline are in actuality. Discipline, as well as procrastination, seep into all aspects of life. A disciplined life will yeild the freedoms of discipline and the procrastinated life will yeild the prison of procrastination.

    To your success,

    Sincerely,

    Andrew Shigeru Christison
