Teaching and Learning

Posted By: Randy GageJuly 22, 2011

It was a nine-hour flight, with a three-hour layover, followed by another ten-hour flight.  I woke up at this morning at 5:15, still exhausted, because my body is back 12 time zones ago.  I’m writing you backstage from a dank, windowless Green Room in Moscow, in a 40- or 50-year-old convention hall with no air conditioning.

Oh the glamorous life of a professional speaker…

But when I go onstage, it will all seem worth it.  The people here are so passionate for success.  And the sacrifices many who came made, make mine pale in comparison.  Many traveled for days, sleeping in cars or decrepit trains, desperate for a chance to learn some secrets of success.  They pay a lot to attend; I get paid a lot to attend.  And more importantly is the honor of being entrusted the privilege of being asked to serve as a mentor.

For what greater honor can there be?  And what can be more important to success and prosperity?

The key is making it a two-way street.  Because we all need mentors.  And with the blessings of having a mentor comes the responsibility of mentoring those who haven’t yet reached your stage of the journey.

This weekend I am the teacher.  Next weekend I will be in California as the student, learning from some brilliant peers and colleagues in the speaking profession.  Every year I try to find two or three events I can attend to sharpen my own saw.  Because the day I stop learning is the day I stop being qualified to teach.

So what about you?

What are you doing to learn and grow?  And how do you pay that back and serve as a mentor to others?

-RG

  1. This week I launched an online training program in social media that I've spent 7+ months creating. I showed up as the teacher for our first free webinar Tuesday, to only have 4 simultaneous technically glitches between my ISP, recording issues, and a few other web matters. We took a retake yesterday, and teaching was a blast. 7 months of blood, sweat, and tears was worth it. Now - I am bringing balance back to life, and delving further into the teaching and mentoring in my spiritual life. Be the teacher and the student... and enjoy living life ALL OUT!

  2. I am a teacher for Capoeira and also teach some kids the art of movement Parkour^^
It´s a lot of fun but also a lot of hard work because I allways have to think about what I can show and teach them and most important how to teach them. This forces me to learn and grow all the time. As a teacher I allways have to be at least one step before my students.
But also through the teaching and teh feedback I get I can learn a lot about my self and my view on the things...

  3. I continue to invest in myself by learning on my own and by investing in mentors who have done what I am aspiring and working hard to accomplish...become a millionaire by 40.

I teach what I learn, teach what I have already done, and keep learning so I can get better for others following in my footsteps.

It's a natural path of entrepreneurship...learn from those you want to be like Ali Brown, Randy Gage (but with hair :), Oprah, teach others what you learn from your mentors, and spread the knowledge globally!

    (O.K...stepping off the soapbox!)

  4. Randy,
The lives you will and do touch will ever be brighter for your efforts! And as the saying goes, "Iron sharpens iron."
I just finished a week long trip from California to Montana (two day car ride each way)to personally connect with people who value independence, freedom, working in direct contact with nature at it's fiercest! It ain't for sissies! I learned survival techniques, living off the grid, emergency preparedness.
What I brought to the table was the ability to create an income from outside the "wilderness bubble" in an environment where many are losing their homes because of job scarcity. Money is abundant there if you know where to look for it and how to access it. Thinking outside the box is not high on Montana agenda. Before we left, we made business contacts that could possibly change financial fortunes for the new friends we made there. We also brought health and world news that doesn't seem to infiltrate there. All in all, it was a very satisfying exchange. I am quite the better for it and hopefully we left Montana a better place.

  5. I want to give back from my food/wine blog... want to do a media scholarship and I'd love to train one student a year on how to write about food and wine... it's taken me 20 years just to get my puny knowledge.. if I can help someone along the way... well, that's what it's all about isn't it...

  6. So true. Sometimes I feel like a converter machine. And the question is not only about language.
When I just really learn something, I already have it on my tongue and I give it away. Although, thoughts that pass through my heart and mouth, often take a different color.

  7. Hi Randy,

thanks for sharing this. Oh, the life of a professional speaker isn't always glamourous ? I was thinking 😉

I like it how you stress the interplay of being the teacher and the student - sometimes at the same time, sometimes at different times.

Teaching others teaches me because I can learn from their feedback, to only name one example. Isn't it giving and receiving simultaneously ?

I am slowly growing into the role as a mentor and get accustomed to the fact that more and more people want to be mentored by me and my team. We're not doing alone...

    Take care

    Oliver

  8. Hi Randy
Its all about keeping the energy flowing , its exhilarating to be able pass on what you have learned , giving and recieving keeps you in the creative flow . I have a love for growth and expansion and yes it can be uncomfortable when we push our boundaries but this keeps it real and it is a joy to bring the knowledge for people to experience for themselves. Life is for living and I accept all what life offers by divine right . God bless everyone may you all be divinely guided to your true place x

  9. Hi RG,

I learn by studying people like yourself, inside out.

I read posts like this, and put them into action immediately. I know "later" usually means "never".

I mentor by creating inspirational content continually. I've penned over 1000 motivational quotes and am right around 700 marketing and inspirational videos on youtube. I also make sure to respond to every help request possible.

We can all serve. At any moment. When you have a desire to serve the Universe sends people your way.

Thanks for sharing with us .

    RB

      1. No. No. Never say never. That's not a very positive thought. People process and proceed with growth in their own way, and in their own time.

  10. Randy,

Just when I am about to embark on another learning on training, this post came out. Talk about apt timing!

Learn up, teach up and spread the knowledge around. Keep giving value back to people as we ourselves learn to keep getting better at ourselves.

  11. Hi Randy,

You life is so meaningfully full. I am greatly blessed to learn from you. Have a very good rest from you almost world tour and God bless

  12. Nice RG.

I have a life coach and it has been the best investment. It's beautiful to have someone walk with you and assist you in navigating life's journey.

  13. I just got an investing coach about 6 weeks ago. Part of my learning and homework involved playing a game to simulate what I will be doing in real life. I noticed that I immediately took on the role of teacher with my game participants. I really enjoyed it. I feel like I don't know much about the subject but once I start teaching others I had a greater appreciation for how far I've already come.

  14. I have learnt so much in my life, but somehow I am struggling applying it. Would love to teach and share my knowledge but I feel I have to prove first that it works.

    Any thoughts?

  15. Randy, hello!
To get to the seminar in Moscow, I had to get 3 hours prior to the train station, then 16 hours to go in an old car which is not that the conditioner was not, but the normal seats. But its nothing compared with the knowledge that I received from you, my teachers. Your new book and training on it confirmed that I am following in the right direction. Good luck!
