Taking Responsibility

Posted By: Randy GageMarch 23, 2009

One of our best players on my softball team showed up late for the game.  As usual.  He came in 15 minutes after it started, and sat in the bench until the coach put him in during the fourth inning.  As he went out, I said, “Guillermo, you need to really stretch out, so you don’t pull anything.”

The next inning, he pulled a muscle in his leg.  He came to me later and said, “You know you jinxed me when you said that, because now I pulled a muscle.”

 What happened here?

He wants to make pulling the muscle my fault.  Instead of talking personal responsibility and admitting that he hadn’t even practiced or played in five weeks, he didn’t show up in time for warm-ups, and just went out cold off the bench.  Because it’s always nicer to say things are someone else’s fault.  Because that lets us be the innocent victim.

If you take personal responsibility for the bad things that happened to you, then you can’t live in victim-hood.  And if you can’t live there, you’re free to be a victor!

  1. Randy you want people to take what? Responsibility? You have got to be kidding me. That's one of the reasons why the mortgage mess happened. No one wanted to take responsibility
for: the mortgage papers the borrower signed, the financial statements of the borrower, the financials reviewed by the underwritters, the loans by the lender(s), the bond ratings by the rating companies and Wall Street for packaging the bad loans as AAA bonds. All are complicent and no one on Dateline last night was willing to admit any wrong doing i.e assume personal responsibility for their role in one of the biggest housing scams ever.

Of course it's easy for you Randy. I even heard you take persoanl responsibility for when you got shot!

  2. I suggestion for a small but important research in the field,
It will sound somehow like this:

How is it that your post come exactly in the time I Need to hear threm

This one came in right minute and landed right on the spot!

    seriously, thanks,
    Dan

  3. Amen Randy. I agree whoeheartedly. Now...the next issue is this...when we can accept responsibility...place the blmae squarely on our own shoulders...I have found I am altogetehr tooo comfortable with that responsibility. I've gotten use to failing!! Now...can you help me kick my own a$$ hard enough to get it off my own chair???

  4. Thanks for your post Randy.
We all need to be sure and accept responsibility. I have my 2 grandkids here right now and I am going to try and share this message with them.

    Thanks

  5. Whenever you point out the obvious it is always your fault...

Shame on your for standing tall and giving good advice!!!

    Hex on!!!

  6. How absolutely perfect for this Monday. Just got back from Toastmasters where I was chewed out by a 20 year T.M because he claimed we had no schedule. This is a man that refuses to have access to a computer and is able to pick up a schedule every Monday we have toastmasters. I was thunderstruck at this mans gall since he aimed the tirade at me the VP of Ed who has those things available for him. Talk about not taking responsibility.

  7. Randy, there is two sides to a coin...and in my opinion, you are only looking at this situation from 'your perspective' (your side).

Now, (and this ONLY for the sake of argument) I am goin' to play devils advocate: let's say that when the star baseball comes in late, sit on the bench waiting to be called upon in the 4th inning -- but you said nothing; but the young star still pulled a muscle anyway. [OR] ....the baseball star come in late, sit on the bench waiting to be called upon --- you say nothing; and the young star goes on to have a stella game. [OR]....you say something; however, nothing happens to the baseball player.

I intentionally left out, what REALLY did happen, because in the scheme of things, you said something....and that something happened! That's the way it is supposed to be.

My point is this, words do have power ..... and Randy it is YOU that has to take some responsibility in this scenario, the very fact that you said something put the universal principles into play. We have to be conscious of what we do and/or say to people at all times. Becacuse (in my opinion), you are no better than the person who attempts to shift the responsibility over on you.

This is the short version...but you catch my drift. The bottom line > our words have the power to put universal principles into action; whether they be negative or positive. So watch what YOU say.

  8. While I agree with you in theory, I don't think that simply saying something causes it to happen (usually). There are millions of people habitually saying to others "Have a nice day!", and yet the people they say it to persist in having whatever kind of day they choose to make of it. So just as saying "have a nice day" doesn't automatically cause it to happen, warning someone of a potential problem does not create the problem.

However, I do agree that words have enormous power and we need to be careful of what we say. So... have a nice day, everyone! 🙂

  9. I have a friend who has had a run-in with every supervisor he has ever had for the last 15 years. He keeps transferring around and the same scenario plays out. He gets "screwed over", according to him, by his new incompetent supervisor.

I have never seen the law of attraction working in such a negative way.

It's bizzare that he doesn't realize that there is only one thing that is constant in every scenario........he is at the scene of every crime!

Everyone can see it but him.

  10. Yes, Randy!

Looking back at my 36 years of life, I can truly say that I Was responsible for just about All that happened to me, the results, the problems, the solutions... What happened was that I made dozens of little choices each day that culminated in a certain "way" of doing things, begetting certain "results".

Responsibility = Response + Ability. Now, when you become aware that you are Able to Respond in order to attain a desired outcome, you are Empowered. As usual, you're right on that count, Randy. Keep on blogging.

  11. Response + Ability = Responsibility.

When you become fully aware of this, you will become Empowered to act. Act in a way that will make your life much more fulfilling, releasing far greater potential in you.

Over time, the results will accumulate and - Walla - you have changed your personal situations & your life. Try it sometime.
