Take this Job and Shove It

Posted By: Randy GageNovember 20, 2011

I posted a link on my Tumblr blog the other day that got a huge response.  It was an article from ResumeBear.com about people who got fired – and then went on to become very wealthy.  Very wealthy.

Take a look at this list – and see how many you can guess.

1)   Got fired from a computer store.

2)   The manager of the Grand Ole Opry told this man he was better off driving a truck.

3)   She was fired from Dunkin’ Donuts.

4)   He was laid on from an investment banking company.

5)   A newspaper editor told this cartoonist he wasn’t creative enough.

6)   This secretary got a pink slip for daydreaming too much about story ideas.

7)   This actor was fired from a small bit role on the sitcom Benson.

8)   The New Yorker fired this copy boy.

9) This person was fired as president of FORD motor company.

10) This guy was fired from Western Union because he spilled acid on the floor.

11) This Baltimore news anchor was removed from her job because her boss said she was, “unfit for television news.”

So who were these people?  Survey says…

1)   Mark Cuban, billionaire owner of the Dallas Mavericks.

2)   Some guy named Elvis.

3)   Some singer named Madonna.

4)   Mayor Michael Bloomberg, now the 18th richest man in America.

5)   Walt Disney.

6)    JK Rowling

7)   Jerry Seinfeld

8)   Truman Capote

9)   Lee Iacocca, who went on to rescue Chrysler

10)  Thomas Edison

11)  Oprah

So…is there a lesson here for you?

  1. Randy, also been thinking about your DES post. How do we mastermind a way to tilt the jobs situation. Plenty of available labor, low cost capital, and a real need for something on a large scale. Ideas?

  2. This is just awesome. Now I see that this applies to my life too. From the past one year I have been feeling that whatever I am doing now is not what I am supposed to do! Maybe rejection helped me find my passion! Now I am on road to find it in my professional life!

Thanks Randy as ever for sharing this!

  3. Hi Randy,

I need to leave comments for you more often. Not only are you a very engaging writer, your messages are incredibly moving and inspirational. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Please continue. I am a big fan.

    Warmly,
    Carolyn

  4. Yes Randy,
it is! It is about action... To do a step... be amazing... To move... So today is the day of action and every next day... Don´t be afraid to move from old life to new amazing... Show what is hidden and this way inspire others. So question is... What is hidden? Answear... my passion for love... Show that you can love everyone... Yes, it seems like crazy... but I understand that we are all Gods living with other Gods and we all are growing, developing our consciousness and our life...
I am writing now and also I will post in English version..

Thank you, thank God, thank myself, that I started to think!!! And started to face obstacles with brave!

  6. And why wait to be fired? Taking a leap of faith - that the only way to be stop having your passion sucked out of you by a toxic job - is the answer. Most of us need to have that vacuum created - but why not create it yourself? 8 months ago, I walked away from a toxic, energy draining job and am building an amazing wellness business - I'm healthier, happier, and living my passion!

Surely, there is a lot of lesson
    to learn from-Never Lose Hope
    and keep moving on.

    Thank you RG.

  8. Yes, go out and do what you were meant to, otherwise you will be working for someone else.
    That is the lesson.

    1. But then again, here is the other lesson. if you were meant to be great and rich, it will happen regardless, you were just born that way.

    1. Right on. Sometimes the best thing that ever happened to someone is to get fired from their job. Opportunities came after that. My Aunt is a prime example. She was fired from her Job at Cheeseborough Ponds when Lever bought them out. After that she became a respected cosmetic chemist consultant who traveled the world formulating creams and such for people. She charged a pretty penny too, but was worth every cent of it.

  9. This post really highlights the need to never submit.

All great people refuse to give in!

I haven't exactly had the greatest of days myself, been feeling sorry for myself too long now, time to move on and fight another day, thanks for the reminder Randy 🙂

  10. I got fired about ten times before. I never had a job for longer than 3 months at a time untill i finally figured out that the key to any kind of real success is getting paid directly by the people you serve and to THEN pay off to all the suppliers.

I mostly got fired for being independent though.. they couldn't handle it..
