Loving to Hate

In America today, we absolutely love to hate each other.  (This post is about United States, but if you change the labels, it’s probably accurate for the situation in most other countries.)  Of course, pitting one group of people against another group has been standard operating procedure for immoral political leaders for centuries. And this is certainly the case with our culture wars now. The Hillary haters and the Trump haters never took a break after the election. Each side just reloaded their arsenal and the vitriolic fight rages on, with the coronavirus pandemic as the new battle ground.

There is a suffocating amount of evidence that this fighting has been inflamed by foreign governments emotionally manipulating us like puppets, with social media platforms as a powerful conduit.  Now the coronavirus pandemic enters at a perfect storm of fear, anxiety, and helplessness. People want to lash out…

#2021Challenge

Take the #2021Challenge

Today, I have some homework for you.  I want you to write something.  A journal entry of your perfect day.  But not just any perfect day.  This entry will be dated January 1, 2021.  And it’s going to be a celebration of the fact that 2020 was the best year of your life.  Really.

Think for Yourself…

Imagine you were a screenwriter and you went to a Hollywood studio to pitch your movie idea about a coronavirus pandemic that threatens the world.  You wouldn’t be able to sell the concept. Because the studio exec would tell you that your script was so implausible, that only the most dim-witted moviegoer would believe such a preposterous plot.  Think of the outline you would present…

Official Coronavirus Cancellations and Postponements…

If you’re like me, you’ve been fixed on all al the activities and diversions that have been cancelled, wondering when they will return.  I have such a fix to play softball again, go to dinner with friends, and watch a major league baseball game.  Not to mention, nervously eying the calendar as the date for the Motley Crue/Def Leppard/Poison concert draws near.   (And coming to the realization that getting a refund for the extra two grand I paid to the ticket scalper is about as likely as receiving a kiss from Tommy Lee.)  I decided the best strategy was doing some postponements and cancellations of my own.  Here’s what I came up with so far.  Please feel free to add any events I missed.

When This Is All Over…

The last three weeks have been spent in self-isolation due to the coronavirus.  Looking at the models, it appears I’ll be hunkered down for at least four weeks more.  Like a lot of you, there are many things I desperately miss: dinner out with friends, playing softball, and writing at my regular table in my favorite neighborhood diner.  But when this began, the plan was to approach the experience time as though the opportunity arose to study at a Shaolin Temple or spend time in a cabin at Walden Pond. (Alone time = Thoreau time.)  Those goals led to others which were developed along the way.    For those interested, here they are…

Upgrade Your Thinking

One of the masterminds I participate in is a WhatsApp chat group that we’ve labeled Juxtaposed Jedi.  It’s a daily chat with three of us, where we’re bouncing ideas off each other, conducting thought experiments, and getting and giving advice.  One of the most valuable parts of the process is when we point out faulty thinking.  This could be a confirmation bias someone has, making an assumption from a bad premise, emotional irrationality, or simply sloppy logic.

What Have We Learned from the Pandemic?

One of the wisest things economist Milton Friedman ever taught was that only a crisis — actual or perceived — produces real change.  It is times of crisis that cause our preconceived beliefs and confirmation biases to get shaken and stirred.  Things that weeks ago seemed politically impossible become politically inevitable.  Countries and cultures mirror individual people in the sense that we usually learn a lot more from our challenges than we do from our victories.

Calling All Prosperity Warriors…

The problem is real: we’re in a global pandemic. There is no denying this reality.  Things look dark, and you could be forgiven for feeling anxious, frightened, or even defeated.  But please don’t allow yourself to stay there.  We need you right now.  And there is cause for optimism, harmony, and hope…

Because there is something else that cannot be denied – and that is the awesome power of the human spirit.

Finding Peace in a Pandemic…

How do you keep your head when it seems the whole world around you is going crazy?  That’s probably a question many of you have been asking yourselves the last few weeks. In times like these, a great approach is to go back to James Allen and the principles in As a Man Thinketh.  Let’s begin with a central tenant of the book:
