Surviving Success

Posted By: Randy GageMarch 29, 2012

We talk a lot about surviving failure.  In my case, I had a much harder time surviving success.

When everything was messed up and I was facing defeat after defeat, I still persevered.  You go on because you must.  You hate your life, so you’re motivated to keep trying until you break through.

And then you do…

What happened next for me, was when the danger started.  My low self-esteem and fearful mindset had me subconsciously thinking I wasn’t worthy.  So of course I created sabotage behavior.

Fortunately I got over that and decided I was worthy.  Then I got cocky…

Started to think I could cheat the universe.  Act out on my addictions and get away with it.  Start to think because I had made some money I was better than others.   I became arrogant, insensitive and materialistic.  And that’s not as much fun as it sounds like...

Fortunately the universe will always send you a wake up call when you need it.  If you’re open to receiving it.

So how you doing?

Are you surviving failure?  And more importantly, ready to survive success?

Very valuable and vulnerable post that you shared here.  I am curious about how you define materialistic. Over the years on your blog, I've posted my thoughts on our relationships to "things" which while not coming from a position of "lack mentality" have somewhat railed against interpreting selfishness as good, etc.  So seeing you ding yourself for being materialistic at one point in time has me intrigued.  How would you define materialistic in the bad sense that you are commenting on here...with the type of materialism that you deem as healthy that you espouse at other times.  That would be an very interesting and clarifying distinction.

    THANKS, Brian

  3. I don´t know if I ever truly "failed" - my past life was rather a trying to get ahead of something "impossible" to overcome. Physically.
Fortunately as a teenager and great collaborator to several teams I "worked with" I became on a certain stage extermely successful.
    No, not money-wise. No dollars.
I accomplished something which none exptected. So I took that success in, I carry it in my blood, in my vains. The good thing: none can take it away from me.
    EVER. It´s MY success.
But as a price to pay I had to start from the first field, I was pushed badly back to the beginning of the life game. Others moved on and were gone out of sight.
It´s the only negative shadow I remember and which is still with me like an old friend who greets me every morning: "hi, I am still here, so how are you today?"

One part of my family-roots came from a more wealthy stage than the other. I feel okay with more luxury stuff, I like it in general, it draws me over, so I own little things but all of good quality. I like to work to get it.
All this is a positive indicator and creates a strong good feeling that I would be ready for success when it rings my door bell. "Oh, there you! What took you so long, huh?" could me my words.....   🙂
I am quite sure I would survive success. And I am aware that´s it´s not easy. But it never will be as bad or challenging as my past. NEVER.

I was badly mobbed. For many years, by many kids, teenagers and people. As a result, I prefer to stand next to people who were mobbed due to being different - whatever they said or acted out on others, there are reasons and we all get our tests to pass. Only these tests let us grow.
So it´s s must we have to take and walk through. All of us.
And those who mobbed people like me don´t take their challenges.
    Fact.
Survive success?  -- Yes. I already did as a teenager.
I am there, but - invisible.

    Randy, enjoy your great day!!

  5. I am DEFINITELY ready to survive success and embrace the opportunity. I do not ever want to get cocky when the millions are flowing, but instead, wish to give freely to those people and organizations that are making a difference, much as the vision I have for my company will be as well.

A favorite quote goes, "If your actions create a legacy that inspires others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, then you are an excellent leader".. This is my deepest aspiration. And with this I also aspire to success financially, spiritually and otherwise.

I also intend to surround myself with beautiful possessions of all types and travel extensively in luxury. I'm a firm believer in my own happiness which in turn, allows me to share with others and to bring happiness throughout my circle and beyond.

  9. Surviving success is a good thing to think about.  However, to me it really sounds more like loving ourselves and being mentally stable.   It is interesting that you thought anyone might think being arrogant, insensitive, and materialistic is fun.  I have never attached the adjective "FUN" to those things.

You know you are better than others at some things, that's how you made money.  It is probably okay to think that.  It's just that we are all equal in our humanity and no matter how much better we are at something than someone else, they should have our respect for their equally shared humanity.

I beg your pardon Randy, but I don't think you were "successful" as a person, just as network marketing specialist or whatever you did.  Truly successful people are just successful at being human.  I think you should rethink your idea of success.

The more healthy I get emotionally, and the more mature I grow, the less I have to worry about handling success or failure.

  10. I don't like the effect of not acknowledging my success has on me while trying not to become ego-maniacal as I achieve my goals. Love your words Randy

  12. I agree success only makes you more of what you already are. Though I have spent my whole live around people who's only intention was to "USE" me and spit me out. So I have no problem saying goodbye to them 🙂 I accept that life will always be a challenge. Though you have taught me well and will always remain humble. Looking forward to one day being able to afford your private coaching 😉

  14. Yes the Universe has a swift way of reminding us who's really at the steering wheel when we try to cheat "it".  I am Clairvoyant and see a lot of dead people in my days due to the gift.  One warning I had given to me from a wise dead man I know well that reminds me not to be a cheat with the Universe was when he appeared suddenly and said to me "There is not a "you" and an "us", we're in this together!" - meaning I was not alone when using the gift to do right for others and myself in this world nor any other worlds that might exist.  So how big is "The Universe" really?!!  Hmmmmmm............

  16. I am so glad I can delete my comments now.  I wrote a comment earlier and thought it was a little insulting.  Sorry,  if you read it.

Anyway, I think what I would like to say now is it is a good idea to think about how we handle success and failure.  I think it requires maturity and emotionally stability to handle either really well.  Worthiness issues are still apart of materialism and addictions.

So, it's a good point to make that money and career success make us feel capable, but not necessarily loveable.  We are all loveable, and the more we know this the more successful we will be in all areas.  Knowing we are capable is important too.

You know I do think you are better than other people at a lot of things.  But, it is good not to be cocky about it.  🙂

I am successful at many things and not others, so I am working on an integrated successfulness.  Successfulness may not be a word, but I like it.

Thanks, My Master!! RG and..May the force be whit us !!!!!!

  20. Hi Randy
Great post and you brought up  really excellent point. If the mindset is not right, being successful can bring you a whole new set of problems that leaves you not much better off than when things were not going so great. You are right though, the Universe is always watching and will provide a wake up call when needed!

  24. Fire, water and copper pipes - this is the way to true success. Copper pipes - the most difficult test!
Thank you Randy, you, as always reminded of this time.

Огонь, вода и медные трубы - это путь к истинному успеху. Медные трубы - самое тяжелое испытание!
Спасибо Randy, ты, как всегда вовремя напомнил об этом.

    1.  @Sergey i am curious: I can imagine what you meant by fire and water, but the hell, say: what about that steam producing copper pipe one has to go through?
May you "translate" this analogy please?

  27. For us that will truly be honest with ourselves, Randy; I think this is actually a fear for many people that are seeking that kind of success. Perhaps fear isn't the right word... we're conscious that this type of mindset can happen to us. We have to ask ourselves, "Will I allow the success I achieve to change me?" We must pose this question frequently to ourselves, and then ensure that the answer is remains consistently the same, if that answer is "no", that is.  I would love to believe that success wouldn't change me. However, I'm honest with myself to say that I'm human, and that the possibility is definitely there. In knowing that the possibility is there, however, I have to keep a close watch on any signs that's pointing out changes in my character and behavior; and immediately nip them in the butt when they come to my attention. I don't believe I would allow such a change to take place though. Mainly because I know who I am now, and I feel that the work that I'm doing on myself at the moment will only reinforce the lessons I've received in humility before the success actually happened. I also firmly believe exactly what you shared here at the end of this post. If a change does occur within me, and by chance I become oblivious to the change taking place; the Universe is most definitely faithful, and it will send a wake up call if and when it's needed. It might not be a pleasant wake up call, but it will send one nonetheless.

  29. I have definitely survived failure and continue to. It took me a week of coaching with Tony Robbins to realize that I was sabotaging my own success. Once I reached a level, where no one around me had gotten, I took the thermostat and turned it down to my comfort zone. Did not even know I was doing it. Amazing what the mind can do when you are not doing the personal work. I think it is something we need to be keenly aware of if you are one who is constantly reaching the next level. I think it's part of the growth experience and a test of how much you've really grown when the S.......t hits the fan, so to speak. Learning to love the lessons and plow right through them.

  35. Randy, I had a realization about some of my actions as of late. I was just getting tired of people being so negative all the time. I realize that my actions as of late have been a little not on the nice side. Though can't understand why people who don't even know how to ask questions before they assume something about someone. I live in an area where a lot of people are in the stone age. I just always like to stand for truth and when people don't understand how the world works and try to force their model of the world on me. It upsets me and I still have a challenge not responding to these upsets. Something I need to work on. How do you handle people who are so negative to you for no reason?

  37. Jared, I like to treat any individual or situation that doesn't exactly jive with my vision as a teacher or mirror to help identify areas within myself to work on or improve! I believe I began using this technique after reading The Power by Ronda Byrne. Typically when we are fine with our own self, the crap that happens around us doesn't manage to penetrate the bubble, rather we manage to filter through all the apparent crap and actually see positive! The garbage seems to find its own way out of our lives! Quite impressive, actually!

  39. You are on spot on what I am going through. Last month I was on the roll, enrolling clients again and again. I got arrogant, thinking that I am so good. Then it all stopped. For 3 weeks, I have not made a single enrollment whether it's corporate or personal clients.
