Stimulating Your Creativity

Posted By: Randy GageSeptember 23, 2010

On Monday’s post I mentioned how I use trips to Key West to stimulate my creativity.  You guys came up with some other great ideas for creative stimulation.  Here are some other suggestions for when you want to tap into your creative genius:

Read books series like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.
Go to science fiction movies like “Matrix” and “Inception.”
Listen to classical music.
Listen to a different genre of music than you normally do.
Go out for dinner and coffee with people with different hobbies, nationalities, and jobs than you.
Read a foreign magazine occasionally.
Take a college course in something you know nothing about.
Go to Wikipedia and just start clicking on random links.
Switch your watch to your other wrist and eat with your non-dominant hand.

And finally, do some things you haven’t probably done since childhood.   Order a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with chocolate milk (this is the only time you’ll see me suggesting you drink milk!), color something, or go play on a swing, trampoline, or jungle gym.

Next post I’ll give you another mental aerobics to exercise your right brain hemisphere.

  1. Randy, I'm glad you mentioned Inception! I watched the movie 4 times already, because every time I watch it, my mind turns into a swirling mass of ideas, all anxiously waiting to pop out.

It's like the vibe of that movie gets me closer to my own creativity and unique way of thinking.

I'll watch it again, as soon as it gets released on DVD:)

    Cheers,

    Josip

  2. Cool stuff Randy,
I'm all about trying something different. I refuse to live life in a rut (grave w/ 2 open ends!) I am creative & loathe being stifled or stagnant.

I practice eating at a new H.I.T.W. ethnic restaurant weekly, find a market place where I am the minority, & now will volunteer at the symphony. This positions me for "shock therapy!" I am determined to travel the world & experience things many people only read about. (uh hum...those that actually read!) I don't want to be shocked by food, attire, language, cultural barriers, etc when I arrive at those places. It also prepares me to think the way they think concerning business.

Was it Teddy Roosevelt who read obnoxiously so he would have something to say to the dignitaries of foreign countries?

Some of my past friends think this is bold & courageous. I think it is sad they won't do the same.

Have fun in Vegas! I await your R brain game.

BTW...I love milk, only if it is soy or rice!

  3. I agree with most of your suggestions Randy... worked with the symphony last fall and you can just feel yourself getting smarter while listening in the hall... but I guess I'm just too left brained or whatever to get my mind around SF.. and movies like the Matrix.. I find them so ludicrous, stupid and boring...
You guys want a laugh?? check out this short video on youtube... Morpheus meets the Dude.. it's called Neo Lebowski and had me bent over with laughter...

  4. Well I'm heading to the ballet tonight to see The Nutcracker. And I've been listening to a classical CD all week that I haven't listened to for well over a year. Viennese Waltzes and marches really get my spirits up.

  5. For a while I was brushing my teeth with alternative hands, and eating with my left also. There are some cross-brain excercises that are supposed to be good too.

  6. If you love writing. Start writing in your best handwriting using your non dominant hand. Cut your t at the top of the stem as in a T.

  7. LOL, seems like you do not drink milk at all.

Your suggestions sound interesting and useful, thanks for sharing.

    Good luck

        1. Ha! I knew that all along. Even when I was a kid I was telling all the other kids that they are being brainwashed by the dairy advertisers. I was amazed at how many of them made sure they drank their milk each day because it was healthy for them.

      1. Not answering for Randy, as I'm sure he has his reasons, but humans are the only mammals that feed their young milk past the weaning stage. The myth about providing vit D is just that, a myth. If that were true, there would not be a 50% rise in asthma among children b/c of vitamin D deficiency. I don't drink cows milk at all. Once you watch the Food, Inc. documentary, you prob won't either!
        Thanks!

        1. Thank you Geneva for your explanation, now I know the reason why my Dr said to me not to drink milk, I used to have problem in breathing and he told me not to have milk and some other things. After a while with not just having them I could breath normally.

I don't drink milk too, I just wanted to know the reason. I didn't know it's unhealthy, I thought it's me that is allergic to that. So, what about other dairy products? are they unhealthy too?

          Thanks,

  9. Join something a club or a class that makes you use skills you haven't use a lot or makes you develop new ones!

I just joined a toastmaster club. I am not a public speaker but decided I need to become one! 🙂
