Sleazy Marketing

Posted By: Randy GageOctober 28, 2012

Occasionally in this space, we look at marketing tips or social media strategies for success.  But what about something that’s just downright sleazy marketing?

As you know, I’m out on tour, and just launched the German edition of Risky Is the New Safe in Mannheim at my prosperity weekend.  I was scheduled to fly home through London on Monday.  I noticed it was a tight connection through terminal five at Heathrow.  And even though the Olympics are long gone, connecting through that terminal is still quite a hassle.  It’s almost always understaffed, very disorganized and they still aren’t even aware of the clamshell x-ray bags for laptops that have been out for two years now.

I have a book signing in Miami Monday night, so I didn’t want to chance missing the connection.   I emailed my travel agent to get me a flight out of Frankfurt to London, put me up in the Hilton at the airport, and then I could get out easily and quickly in the morning.  So she booked me in the Hilton Heathrow Terminal 5.  Perfect.  Or so I thought…

When I arrived, no one could seem to tell me where the Hilton was.  There was one in terminal four they said.  But I doubled checked my confirmation and it said terminal five.  So I called the Hilton elite line.  Or tried.  Only 800 number listed, which doesn’t work from Europe.  Called the Europe number.  Closed.  Finally I call the hotel itself.  The reason no one can find them in terminal five is because they are actually located in Colnbrook, which is a 35-pound (plus ten percent surcharge for credit card) taxi ride away!

So instead of staying inside the airport, avoiding the extra security harassment and sleeping in, I had to go out in the cold, windy and rainy (shocking I know) London weather.  I could talk more about the 15-minute wait at the HILTON HHONORS check in line, and spotty Internet service, but then I’d just be whining.  So here’s the real question:

Obviously there are lots of businesses that that do switch and bait tactics, mislead people, and even do downright sleazy marketing to get customers.  So it’s certainly not shocking to have a hotel that is nowhere even close to Heathrow bill itself at “terminal five.”  But why would a chain like Hilton allow their brand to be misrepresented this way and create such ill will among even their most loyal customers?  What do you think?

  1. Ah, the fringe benefits of biz travel. ;-p

If Hilton has their own internal marketing team then ya, that's Sleazy. If there web and SEO stuff is handled outside the company, Hilton needs to know about this stat.

If it's the former, it tells me other firms are doing the same thing.

  3. Randy, when it turned out to be the wrong Hilton, why didn't you go to a different (closer) hotel, check in and cancel the other hotel? The world won't stop spinning because you stayed somewhere else...

  5. I could have told you where it is and I don't live in in London or stay in Hotels in London, I'm 90 miles away! I only know where the expensive hotels are near Heathrow from attending a seminar in the area. I would have checked online maps and found one nearer.

  7. Just a thought...Seems like it would be great to ask Hilton First as it is possible that it might have been an honest mistake. Americans aren’t the only ones that make honest mistakes.

    1. @JohnDuffy My apartment in South beach is about the same distance from the D terminal at Miami International Airport, as this Hilton in Colnbrook is from Terminal 5.  I never made the honest mistake of describing my home address as terminal D at MIA.

Randy, I guess i wasn’t clear in my response. Don’t you think it a 'best practice' to ask the hotel manager why the hotels location is described in that manner? I understand your blog post implied overall message, however, you’ve used an example based on what the other side (hotel) has had NO opportunity to respond to, First. Perhaps it really was a known deceptive move on the hotels part, but you know nothing.
Is everything posted on your site, 100% accurate? I’m not trying to hate on your, you’re a smarter person than this post though.

Interesting. I've just been speaking with my wife about how too many people give the benefit of the doubt to organisations and companies that give shoddy service and use dodgy tactics to sell their stuff. Instead of letting them away with this stuff and getting all fluffy and nice about it, the first people one should tell is ... everyone you can. Let the company pick up any pieces they may have dropped.
Re Holton, it's the same in Dublin. The Airport Hilton is a good 10 minute journey from the airport.

        2. @JohnDuffy I started the day sick and jet lagged and did a a half-day seminar anyway, because I'm a professional.  So we can safely assume I was tired and cranky already.  Then after wandering around Heathrow perplexed trying to find a hotel no one had heard of, no elite line service, calling the hotel which told me they were one mile away, to finding the taxi ride was 35 pounds, then getting jacked 10 percent to use a credit card, then waiting so long to check in, I was in no mood to hunt down the manager.  (Although someone from Hilton corporate read this blog overnight and emailed me that I would be hearing from the property - "within three days.")  Lovely.  Sometimes you just have to accept it's your night to be hustled.

  10. As an Englishman (or British) I felt ashamed to hear your experience but have to say it has become too common here!  There are some good hotels at T5 (I believe there is a Sofitel) so better luck next time! Anyway when are you coming to visit the UK? We need you here!!

  12. I'd believe what you just wrote!  The hotel chains sell their rooms too now from Asia.  They use to hold their call centre in Sydney, Australia but the upkeep got too expensive.  So guess what - they down sized and went to Asia to hire people for a cheaper dollar to do the same work.  So it makes sense the whole fiasco went down like it did - they just got cheap labour and now cheap information to hand to their customers!

  17. I am absolutly sure it has nothing to do with sleazy marketing agents or anything like it @Randy_Gage It has, however, everything to do with the universe trying to teach you a lesson. Which lesson? No idea, but since I am not living your live, that question is not mine to answer but yours. My suggestion: Book a nice hotel (nowhere near an airport), relax, ask that question right before you go to bed and voila, in the morning it will come to you. Now, if you care to do so and share the answer, then there might be a lesson in it for moi, my friend!! C ya in Houston!!!

  19. Randy,
We both know that traveling ain't what it use to be! The big chains outside of Marriott are not really interested in your comfort or stress, just your money.
I flew to California last week and Southwest booked my companion pass on a different flight, one hour later. So much for the primary having to travel with the companion.
I would have taken the local "motel 6."

  23. Time to have some fun with Randy.....
    Here's a Top 10 List for you:
    1) You get back what you put out there bud (ouch - humor intended)
    2) Never stay at a hotel with "Terminal" in it's name...
    3) Start living - get "Net Jet" service - true prosterity baby!
    4) Time to change travel agents?
    5) or did we not tip our travel agent last time? (sounds like a passive aggressive to me....)
    6) Skip London next time .... it's over rated anyway...
    7) Come on, there never is a "quick out" of any airport anymore
    8) The Queen Mary could have been faster....
    9) Sounds like a lack of prosperity conciousness, did you give them a copy of your new book?
    10) They obviously don't appreciate you like we do!

Sorry for your miserable trip, better luck next time...

    Love you Randy!

  28. Marketing with integrity was a lesson you taught many years ago and one I have tried to adhere to over the years.  Your marketing team should have a word with Hilton to see if their marketing team would benefit from your courses.  In defence of Hilton, I am very surprised they didn't provide you with a courtesy car to and from terminal five as they are well aware of the distance. As a matter of interest: London Heathrow is actually 15 miles outside the city of London and Gatwick is 30 miles outside the city so the whole BAA marketing could do with being a little integrity.  You'll be relieved to know that London City Airport is actually in the city of London.About ten years ago I attended a memorable Randy Gage event at a hotel in Heathrow.  I'm not sure but it may have been at the Hilton;  I do remember that I had to stay at the hotel next door for reasons of economy.  You may be thinking that I was displaying my lack of prosperity consciousness, but believe me, it was far superior to the Travelodge's etc that I might have chosen prior to listening to you. Perhaps, the next time you are making a connection through London, you could try London Gatwick for your amusement.  The Hilton Hotel is located at the South Terminal, Gatwick, but by the time you reach your Executive suite, you have walked almost the equivalent of the distance to the North terminal."Suggestion from mlmxpertholland : Book a nice hotel (nowhere near an airport), relax, ask that question right before you go to bed and voila, in the morning it will come to you. Now, if you care to do so and share the answer, then there might be a lesson in it for moi."For truly memorable relaxing hotels in the UK, you should try http://www.elitehotels.co.uk/.  I will stake "my integrity" on you not being disappointed.  If you are, send me the bill.debbiemichel8@hotmail.com@

  33. Comes as no surprise. Hilton have had precious little integrity since the brand became a franchise. Hilton has no consistency from hotel to hotel and whilst the Hilton Park Lane may still be worth staying in, check out the Hilton in Bracknell. Like a Rolls Royce to a Skoda.

  48. I checked their website:
The address of their location is printed really tiny in the banner. No eye catches that in time.
The LINK "Maps & Directions" would have surprised me a bit. Such a Link doesn´t suit to a hotel at the Heathrow airport, Terminal 5. Directions?

Next in the menu is Local attractions:
Windsor Castle. >> At the airport?
    -->> further down: central London.

I carry no competence from the marketing area. Nothing.Which might be good to say something:
Maybe airports & travels via airfare should become "chic" or HIP and since there might be no room left at the direct airport for such a great hotel (pretend it was great), they just dis-located the potential airport hotel with the attracting name "Terminal 5" further downtown and this way want to connect their customers to MORE travels via airfare.
Maybe an airline investor had the idea. So it might be a vis-versa "law of attraction" they use.
    The abstract.
A kind-a free cheese in.... THE a trap.
    Yes.

  50. From Paul:  "Hilton has no consistency from hotel to hotel and whilst the Hilton Park Lane may still be worth staying in, check out the Hilton in Bracknell. Like a Rolls Royce to a Skoda."Paul, have you stayed at the Hilton Park Lane recently?  I was there about two years ago for a weekend break.  At 7.30am on the Sunday morning the maid was banging on the door wanting to service the room.  She didn't speak enough English to understand my polite request to come back later, especially as the check out time is midday. She returned at about 7.45am, at which time I was not at all amused having just nodded off again.  It transpired that my "do not disturb"was not attached to the door handle when I got up to check on it but for all I know she was the one who had moved it.

  52. @ammin Hi Ammin, I think you just took the first step by asking.  Randy has written some very useful books about prosperity thought and marketing.  You can email me at debbiemichel8@hotmail.com and I will send you some information about the books and courses that I have bought over the years.
Good luck and keep asking questions. Debbie

  53. Interesting timing. Just this morning I was reading about Conrad Hilton in 50 Prosperity Classics by Tom Butler Bowdon and I think Conrad Hilton must be turning in his grave at your post.
In the concluding paragraph of the chapter one reads -
"Despite later becoming known as the founder of an international hotel chain, Hilton was almost 50 before  he bought a hotel outside Texas. Yet what seemed like slowness at the time had its benefits. By buying and operating all these hotels before the Hilton franchise was properly established it allowed him to truly master his industry and avoid risking the Hilton name."
And to end this post on a more inspirational note allow me to add the last sentence of the chapter -
"The moral of the book is that it doesn't matter if you have not yet found your life's mission or achieved your dream of riches, as long as you are in a state of readiness to seize it when it comes."

I think we should.) evil, dishonest, terminal five lovin' dumb bunnies!

      -->> further down: central London.
