Self-Sabotage Clues

By Randy Gage in Critical Thinking, Success, Prosperity.

Great debate going on the last post about being infected with mind viruses.  People still disagree with me, suggesting that God speaks to us.  Annie mentioned something M. Scott Peck wrote, that our subconscious is where God speaks to us.

I also believe the subconscious is where God speaks to us.  And I also believe a lot of people don’t listen!  Or put more accurately, people hear the message through the filters they have.

Because here’s the important thing about mental issues:  they always protect and reinvent themselves.  I quit drugs and went to whiskey, and told myself, that was better.  I quit drinking and went to sex addiction and convinced myself that was better.  Later I went back to drugs and convinced myself that I could do them in moderation.  I went from being unable to accept love to enabling dependency.  One negative relationship to another, one personal issue to another, but it was all just my insanity trying to convince me it was sane.  (And that’s what that kind of behavior is; it’s a minor form of insanity.)

The human capacity for self-delusion is a powerful force.  And when you are infected by mind viruses that mold your foundational beliefs, this capacity is particularly dangerous.

So if you are infected with self-sabotage memes, of course you think you aren’t!  That’s the point I’m making, and why I’m spending three different posts on the same subject.  There are literally hundreds of millions of people infected with negative mind viruses and they have no idea they are.  Some are merely limiting their success; others are actually causing them to act out in self-destructive behavior.  So that takes us back to the million-dollar question:

How do you know if you’ve been infected with negative programming to the degree that your compass is off and you’re actually self-sabotaging yourself?

Mrs. Health & Prosperity wrote,Let me guess:  I can tell I’ve been self-sabotaging if my life isn’t as serene and happy and fulfilling as I’d like it to be.  Someone’s been sabotaging me; I has met the enemy and she is me.”

Bingo!  We have a winner.  And I’m not saying that to be condescending or cute.  That really is the first clue you look for in self-sabotage: the results you are getting.  And just to drive home the point more, if your subconscious mind is rebelling right now, and you’re already mentally composing your comment for below on how that doesn’t apply to you…

This is also why it’s so important to have people in your life that you can check things out with.  People who love you and want the highest good for you, and will tell you the truth.

The other important clue to help you is emotion.  If someone is suggesting self-sabotage to you and you find yourself getting very shrill or emotional, that’s a sure sign that the issue is real for you.

When someone suggests something to you and you can say, “Interesting, I’ve never considered that.  Let me think about it,” that’s a good sign.  If you feel emotional and attack the messenger – that’s a sure sign you’re programmed and your craziness is trying to defend itself. Once you recognize that you have limiting beliefs about money, success and your worthiness, it’s an exciting new journey your life takes.  Awareness may be about 80 percent of the problem.  And that’s the most important step!

    Randy,

    Yet another thought provoker.

As the late, great Jim Rohn has said, “Results is the name of the game.”

If we are not getting the results that we truly want then there are only two things for us to examine in order for us to move forward:

    1. What we are thinking
    2. What we are doing

If both of these things are not congruent with the result we are looking for then we will fail every time.

But when both are in line with the end result, we will hit just about anything that we set our mind on.

We can think all the positive affirmations that we can come up with but if our actions are taking us in the opposite direction, again we fail.

Uncovering those subtle subconscious thoughts that could be sabotaging us is truly up to us as well, and actively listening to our thoughts will help in this area.

Keep up the thought provoking messages!!

I’d suggest that the “doing” emerges from the “thinking” (either conscious or subc. thinking).  Therefore, what we do, or don’t do, is a clue to what we think/believe.  Most of the time, we don’t even KNOW what we think/believe – so we really must study the subtle evidence and clues in order to solve this mystery of What Was I Thinking?!?

@MrsHealthandProsperity And sometimes to break free, we have “act” in spite of what we are thinking. I’d like to call that pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone.

I think sometimes, we use “our thinking” as an excuse for lack of action and action in the end is the only thing that will produce the result.

I agree Randy!  Both blog posts regarding memes are spot on!  Many of those memes are created from our childhood and enhanced by the actions we take.  So a meme can lead us to engage in a certain behavior, which feeds upon itself.  Including self-sabotage.

Thank’s Randy for yet an awesome post!!!
I know I’m sabotaging my own prosperity, and I’m working hard on that. My bug has been in the financial area. Success with what I’m doing is actually great – untill we come to the money part, but I have no doubt I’ll succeed there too, by continous replacing negative thoughts with positive ones.
Thank’s for all your help 🙂

Yes,and we keep sabotaging ourselves because we have beliefs such as I don’t deserved… and to avoid pain and feeling empty.  So,what were you hiding when you were doing drugs, drinking whiskey, and jumping from one relationship into another?

  13. This idea that we self-sabotogue even at the very subtle level of our “inner guidance” is a new awareness for me….awesome!  Got it now.
I will be watching myself even more carefully for my resistance to new ideas – hadn’t recognized that the resistance itself is evidence of guilt, lol.

Something I stay in tune with  both for myself and when dealing with others is the ability to take into account a new perspective. If I shun a new thought, I realize that to the degree I resist, everything stays the same. And I am guilty of resisting with all my might on a regular basis. And I’m aware of it.

The same holds true with others. Making a supportive observation met with resistance means that the self sabotaging thoughts and beliefs are firmly in place. And like your example at the end of this discussion, it’s that sort of response that we look for. Werner said it best years ago about the subject of Attraction: “People that are attractive are Interest-ED; People that are BEING Attractive, are Interest-ING”. We ALL need to be interested in receiving guidance  and letting go of what does not work. End of story.

  23. Great food for thought.

I have 2 inner voices – big and small …
Big voice encourages me to grow. The small internal voice calls to be at peace and comfort. In addition, she usually  pleads with love of my own and others. I gradually began to distinguish them. How?

The first sign of little voice is fear. If  I feel fear, it means I must do exactly this.
The second feature- the little voice all the time looking for some support, someone who is smarter or more experienced. The little voice before decisions is looking for confirmation from the outside.

Big voice calls me to act unpredictably, encourages and finds creative solutions. It doesn’t look for any smarter. Because it is already the Great Wisdom.

Awesome, Randy! I absolutely love this topic! Now, though I have made great strides in many aspects of my life, I would like your opinion: Having you as one of my most influential inspirations and mentors, and knowing part of your history in network marketing where you made huge sacrifices to go to events, I am about to “over-invest” (compared to the norm and general advice) once again in my education & personal development, by travelling in October… I feel “internally compelled”, knowing in my heart  that it will make a difference, yet there is this “mind virus”? that tells me to save that money that I have not cashed yet… I am being hyper transparent here, because I want YOUR PROFESSIONAL OPINION… THANK YOU!

Man, Randy, I don’t even know what to say…

I can relate to all of this so well right now.

This afternoon I got word from my employer that I am fired. I was a valet attendant at a local casino. My Dept head and other company execs were trying to keep me but I made a very poor decision last Friday morning and it ended up costing me my job. It involved whiskey. Of course I have a very reasonable story and justification for the whole thing and everyone I tell the story too agrees it wasn’t that big of a deal.

A few months ago I woke up in a jail cell. Didn’t know how the hell I’d got there or why. Turns out I’d been arrested for public drunk at another local casino (out for a bachelor party.)

The arresting officer must have thought I was a nice guy or something because I ended up getting out of the $230 fine that came along with the jail stay and there were no repercussions of the incident. No court time or anything. Just an opportunity to sleep it off in the drunk tank. I was appreciative they put me in a cell and I didn’t get into any serious trouble. Shrugged it off and didn’t really think of it anymore after that. Again, of course I have a very reasonable story and justification for how that happened.

I have other similar stories I could pull up, but you get the idea.

Truth is, I’ve been in a personal financial recession for about 5 years now. Which in itself is ridiculous. That’s a long time for a fella with my experience and “potential.” There’s really no excuse for me to be living the way I have been for this long. Since being in this recession I pretty much never leave my house. I can’t, shit it costs money to go out there. So I stay in. And drink. It’s what I do. Not an ugly, sad kind of drinking. I’m usually studying something, doing some kind of personal development blah blah blah… But whatever I was doing, I had a drink within reach.

Last Friday morning when this whole job thing went down and it “just happened” to involve alcohol I didn’t want to pay that little piece of info any mind at all.

Well, now that an incident with alcohol has cost me my job it’s become obvious that it’s time to wake up and smell the results.

I’m not kidding myself any longer. Well, at least in this area of my life. I’m sure there are still others where I’m plenty delusional 😉

It’s all so cliché but I really do believe that everything happens for a reason and that everything is for my highest good. As you’ve said in your Prosperity audio program: “We don’t get what we deserve, we get what we expect” “and accept” but it’s the expect part I’m focusing on here. I expect this uncomfortable situation with my job is “for me” and so I’m finding plenty of good in the whole thing.

For now I’m just doing a personal 90 day challenge. No alcohol at all for 90 days. Today is day 7. I’ll reevaluate in 83 days what I’ll do next.

Not sure how I got into all that or if I should even post all of this in the comments ( I know it’s crazy long, sorry about that). But if the topic is self-sabotage, it just feels like I’ve been doing some of that around the subject of personal success and finances and the way I’ve been abusing alcohol has surely been helping me continue that vicious cycle of struggle.

All and all I’m grateful for the awakening and for this blog! I’m looking forward to the next post.

Why do our negative thoughts always want to crowd out our positive thoughts? Is it because we’ve programmed our minds like that? I keep working on that…

    1.  @tom larsen
maybe “our” (your) habitual thoughts are negative? Maybe you’re affirming that it’s common, normal, typical or even natural by saying it the way you said it?

Personally, I don’t feel that my negative thoughts crowd out my positive thoughts at all. In fact, I’m pretty happy with how when I do have a negative thought I catch it pretty quick. My “natural” habitual (default) thoughts are certainly of a positive nature.

      The answer:
Habitual personal development. There’s no shortage of lack centered, negative stimuli being offered out there. But when we make a conscious effort to put “good in” on a regular basis we can get to that tipping point Randy spoke about on one of his Prosperity TV episodes a while back (the one at the ball field I think).

Okay, I still like your post a lot Randy, and we may be saying the same thing, I might just be arguing semantics but, here it is:  I don’t think our subconscious has filters.  If our subconscious is where God speaks to us, there are not filters.  The filters lie in our conscious mind, our waking moments.  We choose not to here Gods message, we choose to distort the answers, and then we lie to ourselves.  The lie is conscious, the truth is subconscious.

Memes are only a part of our personality if we allow them to be there. Not God, society, not our loved ones, or enemies are capable of truly deceiving us, unless we let them.  The problem is the lies we accept are told to us when we are young.  It is difficult to undo those lies because they are near and dear to us, and they protect us.(or so we think)  The lies are apart of consciousness, the truth the filters can never get to, are in our subconscious.

Our consciousness rebels our consciousness lies, not our subconscious.  It is pure and it is good, no insanity there.  If God is our subconscious, it is the place we need to go.  However, it might take an army to get there, or literally the work of becoming conscious of the truth.  So, once again there are universal truths, and there are personal truths, and it is not possible to possess the complete knowledge of another person’s truth.

I think we agree on this.  I guess  I would only change it  by saying.  “People can always here the message God is sending them, they choose listen or not to listen.”

I get what your saying Randy, and I think it is very helpful.  I’m just wanting to clarify.

Craziness is a  disconnect with our truth, I believe that.  It is important for us to feel empowered though, knowing we can here God’s message whenever we are ready to listen.  And the person or event or whatever forces us to hear, is very individual.

You know the insanity is trying to protect us.  Our insanity wants to protect us from pain, not from being sane.   But there comes a time when we don’t need that protection anymore.

    Conscious, Subconscious And Superconscious
“The mind in action is conscious, subconscious and superconscious. We are aware of all conscious activity. We are aware of some subconscious activities expressed in our dreams, mingled with our conscious mentation, and in the functional operations of our bodies. The vast part of subconscious activity never rises to the plane of consciousness.
We know superconscious activity as it expresses in our dreams, in a vision, and consciously as a special illumination. The superconscious must express all its operations in symbolism, symbols created by the conscious and subconscious. Apart from these symbols, we cannot intelligibly describe the things known in superconscious.”

The success I fear is ruining my relationship. He tells me often that he cannot be successful if I do not help him. I don’t always feel as passionate about his business as he does; so I often fail to do the things I’m supposed to do. He tells me that I am sabotaging our success. We pray for Happiness,Health and Wealth but most of all that I will stop lying to himAnd myself every day. I pray thay our prayer is answered.

    1. You might want to take your prayers back a step.  Instead of asking for Happiness, Health & Wealth, you personally might pray “help me to WANT the Wealth I’ve been praying for.”
I learned this lil’ trick years ago in my forgiveness work.  “Start out by praying for His help to WANT to forgive the hapless jerk,” my teacher suggested.  That prayer was answered, and then I could move on to the next step, which was actually forgiving him.  But first, I had to want to!
Prayers for wealth, success, prosperity can never be answered when a part of us is shrieking, “Danger! Danger!”  We must first truly want what we think we want.  He can help with that.
      eos: end of sermon.

      1. ps: do you think he might be self-sabatoging himself, with his idea that “he cannot be successful if I do not help him.”  lol!  Lots of spouses are successful in all sort of businesses without their domestic companion’s help.  Isn’t he fortunate to have a scapegoat for his lack of success!  Sheeeesh…..

I am eating RAW live food & herbs..

I am thinking the more connected we are to raw live foods and connected physically to the earth, the more we can hear the universe/God. God is good. Life is good.

Processed foods, cooked food… are dead.. (and LACK nutrients… maybe put us in LACK)

“Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.” Genesis 1:29 (NIV)

“And the Lord God commanded the man saying: of every tree of the garden, thou mayest freely eat.… (Genesis 2: 16)

…and thou shalt eat the herbs of the field. “(Genesis 3: 18)

I am Reading  Conscious Eating by Gabriel Cousens Md:

“A PRIMARY, ONGOING WAY THAT WE ALL CONSCIOUSLY or unconsciously relate to nature is through our food. Eating is an intimate way to extract life-sustaining energy from Mother Nature. In the process of digestive assimilation, the food, as part of Mother Nature, gives up its identity and takes on the identity of the one who has ingested it. We are actually assimilating the forces of nature— stored in our food— whenever we eat. Each bite we take brings us the experience of our loving connection with Mother Nature.
Food is a love note from God. Its letters are written by the rays of the sun. It says I love you and I shall take care of you and sustain you with the offerings of my earth. If we take time to read the love letter, by chewing carefully and feeling the messages that are stored in food by the sun, earth, wind, water, and even by those who have grown, harvested, and prepared the food, its assimilation takes on a whole new meaning. This is a specific way of receiving God’s grace, a holy sacrament to be experienced slowly, carefully, and consciously….

The idea that each food, as a particular energy, affects us on an emotional, mental, and spiritual level is a new idea for many people in our industrial civilization. But for thousands of years Ayurvedic physicians, Chinese acupuncturists, ancient healer priests and priestesses, and Western herbalists have utilized this awareness in their work. According to The Spiritual Properties of Herbs, by Gurudas,

“An herb as a natural substance provides healing, but it also provides a spiritual message.”

@carolstewart so it doesn’t matter where cooked food comes from? and how it was grown? (I eat organic as much as possible)…

does it matter where your meat comes from? what it was fed? where that food was grown? how they were treated? where they given antibiotics & hormones etc?

maybe “our” (your) habitual thoughts are negative?
