Sacred Space

Posted By: Randy GageApril 2, 2012

Regardless of your religious beliefs, you likely realize there is a force greater than you.  Hopefully you have a church, mosque, temple or synagogue where you can receive spiritual sustenance, and connect with this power.  But whether you do or you don’t – know that you can always create a “sacred space” to commune with this greater power anytime.

Last night as I walked back from dinner, I detoured into the park and just sat on the bay.  It was such a spiritual experience, simply gazing at the stars, listening to the tide, and watching the planes on approach to MIA.

For you it may be yoga, meditation, running, or quiet prayer.  It may be walking along the beach, climbing a mountain, celebrating a sunrise, or simply centering yourself while waiting at a traffic light.  But it is important to your harmony that you regularly set aside the time, and go into that sacred space.

Thoughts?

  1. Frankly, Randy, I find the concept of "setting aside time" to live spiritually fairly absurd. The sacred space is the one between our ears - or possibly between our arms (our hearts) The place where we are, or the activity we are pursuing, in the outer world is irrelevant.  The challenge is not Place, but Time.

Brother Lawrence worked at  "practicing the presence of God"  in every waking moment; that's  the ideal.  There is always times...sitting in the park in the gloaming, OR commuting, or brushing our teeth....those things which take only the smallest percentage of our attention are opportunities, to live spiritually. I'd say that the key is to begin "practicing"  rather than "setting aside time" -- to be spiritual.  It can become a habit, a good habit.  Who ever heard of a smoker "setting aside time" to have a cigarette?  Rather, we need to Snatch Time to practice "living spiritually".  That's my opinion, and I'm stickin' with it....   Love, Mrs. H&P

      1. Hey Randy, I love it when you toss out a play-ball like this one - something I feel strongly about.  I appreciate that your remarks are open for discussion, rather than expecting slavish agreement.
I agree that we are essentially "in agreement on this" but I get a little warm under the collar about "create a sacred space" - it's a cliche nowadays in our culture.  Cliches have their uses - as a platform from which to clamber higher.  Let's move from "create a sacred space" up to "recognize your heart as a sacred space"  (ooo, I like that; divine inspiration!  ;>)  (I'm a bit word-smithy myself; believe me, my responses go through several rewrites before I hit the Post button.

  6. Nice day,
I think as well, it is very important to "connect" regularly, and i am so happy to read your experiences, and the lot of comments to ur thoughts, because it justifies that every human beeing has God inside.. (a few months before i watched a good film about it, with the title:"Conversations with God".
What i want to tell you, and the others, who read- and if someone needs it, sure, read it, because it will be not a coincidence for the one, who needs:) -, so, the important is to connect always with God, because there are the forces good, and bad- they're exist whether u accept it or not.. and connection regularly is like.. making stronger ur spirit, making stronger ur "shield".
There is a little problem nowadays with some... "groups", who teaching people egz.: how to give energy to the others.. because these forces are exist.. but the problem is.. that they don't teach it, how to "deal" with them.
So let me tell u a story, that i had,.. an experience with one of the members of "these new" groups.. i was running into the classroom at the university around 9 in the morning, and i was so tired, had no energy.. because i had to wake up like 4 in the morning to travel to Budapest (Hungary) to the University, and i lived like 200 km far from it.. and i had a lot of overtime work.. so i was really: not myself.
One of the girl's in the class told me: "hey, Erzsike (that is Elisa in hungarian), u are not urself, come with me to the other room, and i help you". So i went... She told me to close my eyes. She didnt touch me, but told some pray- which words i couldnt understand.. and at the same time i started to feel: oh.. i am blowing up.. ! When she finished.. really, it was like 2 minutes, but it was like a miracle.. : i was like a different person! I had so much energy, i jumped again, i smiled and laughed.... etc etc.. that feeling lasted like 1 day.
Then.. i was even more down then i was before.. i started to have nightmares.. strange feelings.. (spirit experiences which are better not to write here in public)... and then at last i decided to call one of the priests on.
You, know i brought up as a catholic girl, with strict catholic rules.. and yes, i know that to be a true, "shiny" spirit priest, who is really the leader of the spirits.. is not easy to find. But i knew someone at that time.  I called, and i told my "sympthoms" like u tell to a doctor. When i finished telling he asked: "Erzsike, weren't you connected in some way with some person, who wanted to .. egz give u energy perhaps?"
I was so surprised and i told: "Yes, i was."  "Since when?" - he asked. And i replied, and realized, that since that time i have these bad, strange "sympthoms".. and then, he started to pray. Really, i dont know what he did. I dont know how he did. But a few minutes later the air was warm around me, and icy cold around him. (Before, it was the opposite, but it is hard to explain in public:) )
And then all was ok with me, and he told a thing, i will never, and never forget: "Dont forget never, that u have like a shield around you with good energy. When u pray u make it stronger. That is, why it is important to connect always with God, because u make ur spirit, ur shield stronger, and u go on the right way. That girl, opened this shield. She wanted good.. she learned how to open this "shield" to give energy.. but the problem is that they forget to teach the people how to close it: how to deal with these forces."
So, all i wanted to tell, in short way: that it is important to "connect" in some way regularly. I hope it will do you, or someone else's who is reading: good. And sorry, if i wrote too much.
Thank you what you are doing, and please don't stop it: continue, because it is good, and you can help a lot of people.
    God bless you from Hungary,

  9. I am blessed since I live VERY close to San Francisco and run a path that takes me along the Richardson Bay which is part of the famous SF Bay. As I walk or run the path each day I can see the majesty of the Golden Gate Bridge towers, the glistening bay, the hills of Marin including world famous Sausalito, Belvedere Island and the SF skyline. It's very tranquil, amazing and quieting. I often just go and sit by the Bay and connect with the Universe. This is my sacred sanctuary and I'm so grateful for it, too.

  11. I can find that sacred place wherever I am, Randy. It's my belief that that power's omnipotence is everywhere that I am. So if I am in the laundry room, and I tap into it... It's there. If I'm in a crowded room... It's there too. If I'm in my office working on one of my writing projects; I need only to tune myself into the realm of adoration and gratitude... and I can feel a calmness, almost immediately, come over me. I trust the power that resides within me. I know that it has led me thus far, and it will continue to do so until my time here is done. The most powerful place for me though at the moment is in my office; in the morning time the sunrise beams in my window. That power is like no other I feel; and it sets the tone for the rest of my day. 🙂

  13. Hi Randy
I am one of those spiritual but not religious people...I know that statement evokes eye rolls from people but that is the best way I can describe it. I certainly believe in a force higher than myself but I do not share the beliefs of any particular religion. Like you, I find that sacred space in certain experiences or certain settings. Being in a really beautiful natural setting in the quiet is a favorite. I also meditate daily and this helps get me in a place where I can really connect to my higher self.

  19. So very important to be still. I learned something yesterday from a preacher. He said, Faith is produced in the heart. The word EAR is in the center of the word HEART. Hear with your heart and not just your ears. HE, is at the begining of the word HEART and ART is at the end of the word HEART. Anyone else see the significance of this?

    1. Dearest Maryellen, there IS significance to the idea of listening with the heart, but there is no significance to the way the word is spelled (they spell it differently in different languages).  It is easy to see "signs & symbols"  but do remember that the world is not As It Is, but as we are; it is pretty easy to slide in the superstition mindset.  (Somebody reminded me of this when I was starting to slither into superstition mindset; it brought me up short, thank goodness).

      1.  @MrsHealthandProsperity Yes, Mrs. H&P you raise a good point.  I think it is fun to find symbolism in the mundane world, and I think you can, however, you must use caution.    Some symbolic meanings are personal and some are universal, and I suppose if you want to see God in the word heart that is your prerogative.

My objection is that it is masculine.  Isn't that funny?  I just don't like to think of God as a man.  When I find myself doing that, I am usually waiting for a paternal figure to rescue me from my problems.  So, I like to think of myself as part of the God equation, so I will remember my "stuff" won't be miraculously resolved by a Big Guy in the sky. But, that's just me.  I always want someone else to solve my problems, but it just never works that way.

I like to think about the fact that Dog spelled backward is God.  I like that one, because most dogs are so full of unconditional love.  🙂

    7. Nice day,
I think as well, it is very important to "connect" regularly, and i am so happy to read your experiences, and the lot of comments to ur thoughts, because it justifies that every human beeing has God inside..
