Resolved!

Posted By: Randy GageNovember 9, 2011

So I’m reading Orrin Woodward’s new book, Resolved 13 Resolutions for Life.  It’s a fascination look at how many legendary figures in history resolved to build lives of virtue through the simple practice of daily resolutions.  Then he offers his take on 13 resolutions he’s made to live his life by.  So of course I’m all over this book!

For George Washington, the big issue was developing character.  Probably a lot of people today would be shocked to learn the challenges he faced and the work he had to do on himself.

Ben Franklin was perhaps the most brilliant of the early American revolutionaries, but in his younger years was widely despised for his arrogant manner.  (Of course I couldn’t relate to this in the least!)

Theologian Jonathan Edwards devotedly wrote 70 resolutions and then read them once every week for the rest of his life.  Orrin details this on page 20 of the introduction.

Which was the point I set the book down to begin my own list, which I will read every week, for the rest of my life.

You in?

  1. I'm in. I would like to add something to your list. 🙂

You are confirming that you are arrogant in this post. Don't do that. Don't celebrate being arrogant. Anyway, deep down your just a big Ol'e softie. You are like an M&M hard on the outside but sweet and soft in the middle. Maybe strong willed, firm minded, would be better adjectives.

Yes, I will think about writing my own list of resolutions as well.

  2. So much to read, that could do it 16 hours a day. Has anyone found a way to make money from reading? I do not think the book proofreaders, perhaps something more creative?

Yes, I also write a list. I am not sure for whole life (too seriously such as promises of marriage), but certainly for some time.

    1. You might consider contacting newspapers and magazines to see if they need people to read books and write reviews (similar to reviewing and rating movies)

    2. I make money reading! I joined the LIFE program at livingforexcellence.com and get paid to read non-fiction (history, leadership, marriage, family, interpersonal skills, etc) and encourage others to read. Since I am a voracious reader, this is the perfect set up for me. However, it isn't as easy as it sounds. I have to apply what I read! There is the rub! Have to grow and improve myself using the information in the books. Grow myself as a business person, a leader, a developer of leaders, a wife, a grandmother, etc. OK, it isn't that hard. And, it is a ton of fun!

By the way, Orrin Woodward taught me to write my list of resolutions a few years ago. I review it daily and have updated it a couple of times when it needed tweaking. A list definitely helps me stay on track! It is so easy in the busy-ness of daily life to lose track of priorities. The list helps combat distractions. M. Fitzgerald

  3. Randy,
It is indeed very powerful to write down our resolutions and review them.

A few years ago I learned from Brian Tracy to write my top six goals down and review them each day which I do. I have written articles to encourage people to do this too and the feedback is it really helps others who follow this practice.

Do you review your main goals each day?

    David

    1. I've read Brian Tracy's works too. I appreciate his help. Sometimes I write down my achievements at the end of the day.

  4. Randy, I am in! Excellent synopsis. Keep leading the Revolution brother as we have much to do. Freedom on the inside precedes freedom on the outside. thanks, Orrin

      1. Randy, what a great idea! It would be wonderful to see Orrin Woodward do a guest post on his new book. (hint hint hint!)

  5. ogg mandino also wrote of this in his book the greatest salesman, to write as well as recite your "goals" or "planned objects" everyday for 30-days. it's is a challenge simply to do the recital part, daily, consistently. Once you master this, prosperity really will be yours!

  6. Randy,

Another excellent reminder! I had been reaffirming my Resolutions for several years now, but they have grown a bit stale. Your post gave me the kick in the butt I needed to revise and update, fine-tune my Resolutions to move forward.

    Thanks!

  7. You got me, I'm in!

Working with Deena Morton right now, she is one super driven lady.

The more I look, the more I find, or does it find me? Who care's I'm in, thanks Randy another great reminder.

    Keep em coming..

  8. Randy,
I don't know if you will remember me. I met you at a Bob Berg "The Big Event in Palm Beach, FL this past January. At the time I was struggling with having large chunks of time (during High school) that I could not remember. I felt totally blocked that I could not make peace and ask forgiveness for anything during this time... not to mention, frustrated that I couldn't remember anything. You told me to say a blanket prayer over that time and ask for general forgiveness. I did that, and went back to work and life... tring not to think about it. Well, this summer I was able to connect thru FB with 30-40 people that I went to elementry school with. These are people I had no connection with for 30-35 years! I ended up going to their 25th class reunion (I graduated from another school). Now, I can't say the memories came flooding back... cuz I still don't have much memory... but I do now have connections! It has given me such peace to feel that I have a past that was shared with others. Thank you, Randy.

Oh, yeah.... I'm in! 🙂 Crystal

  9. Thank you! Wow...seems challenging, but so very worth it! What are some of the resolutions you came up with (if it's not too personal)?

I will start with: being focused, self-acceptance, being positive...

I also just did a tele-seminar with Marc Allen who suggests a "one page plan" where you write your goals (business in this case) on one page, keeping it simple and straight forward. Like: "I will increase my profits by 50% in the next year - and then a simple outline of the how's etc..." Good advice there.

    Thank you for your inspiration!

    1. Hi Kristen-

Right on. From my experience if you just focused on self-acceptance and loving yourself, that transforms all areas of our life.

  10. WOW! what a trip! I have been writing little "reminders" for myself for many years. It never really dawned on me that these are the bridges to cross for me to become who I am meant to be...!
    Thanks Randy!

  11. I am in. I have started my list a couple of weeks ago. Now I will get back and complete the list and then post in my office on my vision board to read daily before beginning my day and nightly just before retiring the night.

  12. Another one for the reading list then. My bedside basket is overflowing with inspiration!

I read Ben Franklin's auto-biography a while ago and was fascinated by his journey.

  13. I just went through a 2 day program last week entitled Ideal LifeVision, which seems to be along a similar line. It involves writing and then recording your life vision for the next 12 months, in your own voice and set to Baroque music. You listen to this everyday to reprogram the subconscious mind, and then re-write and re-record when you've accomplished things and/or want to set new goals for yourself and your business.

  14. Wow.. this is cool. So many responses to the post so it must be something worthwhile.

    Yes, I'M IN!

Will get to work writing my resolutions and will read them daily.

    Thanks for posting!

  15. Thanks for the recommendation on this book Randy. While I pursue goals and try to create habits that will help lead to their achievement, a list of resolutions to live your life by is certainly inspiring. I'm in!

  16. I was looking for an example of what kind of things you could write-how to write them so they are open and not setting oneself up for another dose of perfectionism! 'Think I got the drift, so I'm in Randy! I have some work to do with a few areas in my heart, and some purpose and business goals I am manifesting -affirming those intentions each day keeps it forefront in my mind and more than just a wavering thought. Maybe we can all share one or a couple at some point? Thanks for sharing the book-that was nice of you!

  17. Randy, I've been around a few years, and have realized every one of us has a gift! It is what makes you, you and me...well me. We regognise this gift when we hear or see an artist. Sinatra, Beatles, Van Gough etc. . Networking is giving some of yourself to someone else to better their life. If they know that you care, and accept your gift, you will both gain. Just be you!

  19. Sorry but I juts don't get the "resolution" thing...it sounds so mechanic and simplistic to me. I am who I am a powerful authentic man. I behave in the most authentic way always. I'm not sure what is the mechanism of "practicing resolution" is about? It's like you wake up one morning and decide what a=or how you want to be and then you write those decisions down and repeat them? I don;t get it Randy...it might be appropriate for people who live on daily rituals or something...not sure...

  22. Hi Randy! I just think that there is a revolution of leadership coming toward us now with such a fast pace that we won't be able to hold it back! I have been reading your blogs a while already and I must tell you, you are playing a big part in it! Thank you! And as me being part of Orrin Woodward's team for a while already, I believe that Orrin is living fully every minute in the day, and he truly lives by all the 13 resolutions he has written in his new book! Randy, thank you again for doing what you're doing for the world!

  23. Hi Randy,

I like your blog and I would like to read the book but the writers selling site doesn’t offer shipping to European countries and unfortunately the book is not for sale at Amazon.com.

Selling the book on Amazon is the quickest and simplest way don’t solve this, don’t you agree?

I would like to inform the writer about this but his site is a bit rudimentary and a lot of functions don’t work including the contact function.

Maybe you can help. Does his book offer an email address that you can pass me on so I can contact him?

    Thanks a million Randy

  24. Certainly I am in! That's a great idea and splendid opportunity to change myself and others. So, when you notice something you don't like in other people, change this in yourself as soon as possible

  25. GREAT REVIEW! I pretty much agree with all your thoughts you said in your article, especially at the middle of your article. Thank you, this info is very valuable as always. Keep up the good work! You've got +1 more reader of your super blog:) Isabella S.

  26. Just turned 75 and I'm all in...I mean I'm in!
Will find the book to see how different it is from what I've been doing.
Thanks. I enjoy reading the emails.

  27. We are IN Randy. I have spent a week on Chapter 1. Reading and rereading it. Figuring out what Orrin calls "your north star". It's been fun learning and growing. I've been highlighting and taking notes. My poor copy is going to be wore out by the time I get done, for sure, but it is so worth it. Any thing that Orrin has spent 18 years researching you know is fantastic and life changing. God Bless, Malissa Betz
