Receiving a Gift

Posted By: Randy GageMay 29, 2012

It was 8:30 this morning and I was already on my second plane.  I was meditating with my eyes closed while they finished boarding, when someone gently placed her hand on my shoulder.  I opened my eyes and a woman I’ve never met leaned over and whispered in my ear, “You have beautiful eyes.”

I thanked her as she moved to the back of the plane.  Suddenly the 4 am wakeup call, the one-hour weather detour, and having seat 1B without the usual legroom didn't seem so irritating...

I have no idea who this lady was, or when she saw my eyes, but I know this:  She gave me a gift.  Which I gratefully received.  And there’s a great prosperity lesson for you in that…

About receiving.

How are you with receiving?  Do you allow others to sometimes do things for you?  Will you ask for help when you need it?  Can you accept a compliment without brushing it off?

Many people think prosperity is about independence and self-sufficiency.  I think it may be more about intra-dependence and sharing; giving AND receiving.  It is having the self-esteem to know you are worthy, and accepting.

The greatest prosperity lesson you can ever learn is the ability to receive a gift.

  1. You gave that lady the gift of hapiness of having a gift accepted. Nobody only gives or receives. Everybody receives and gives and vice versa at the same time. Giving IS receiving.

  3. This was wonderfully described....I had the feeling i was watching the scene. To be honest, I can´t wait to read the post one day when you come up with passing this gift on....

  7. Thank you for the reminder, it is sometimes hard to be gracious and just say thank you!
it is a blessing given from the other persons heart.

  11. I must be more aware of these things, it all seems so normal to receive and give a compliment. It's like we do it out of politeness ...

  13. I am GRATEFUL to receive your teachings from Prosperity TV, your blog, Twitter and your presentations I have attended. When we are conscious of RECEIVING, we are already prosperous, I think+I feel... THANK YOU for your powerful messages, and I decide to put my DISCIPLINE to work today, on a consistent+committed way, so that I may be able to receive more as I give out and provide VALUE to the Universe.

  15. Hey Randy, now that is nice gift to receive. You're right, sometimes it can be hard to know how to take a gift. Funny we'd need to remember that as kids it was pretty easy...

  19. It was and is one of my hardest to learn concepts: letting the good come to you. Not letting others help me - in retrospect - didn't help me. I think it is some kind of worthiness issue. But I am not holding to it any more and every day life gets better!

  21. Amen!

And it's selfish to not be a good receiver anyway.

Think about how good it feels to give. There can not be a giver without there also being a receiver. So when we deny a gift we are denying someone the gift of giving, that's how it's selfish.

It's our pride and sense of unworthiness that allows us to think it's appropriate to deny a gift (of any kind.) And in those moments we're so focused on our own pride or unworthiness that we're not thinking about the giver at all.

Take your focus off yourself, focus on another. Stop being selfish and receive the gifts offered you already! It'll feel good, which is the real gift anyway. 🙂

p.s. Which is better to give or to receive? To inhale or to exhale? How about they're of equal importance? Balance. You can't go around breathing out all day, you'll run out or breath... and soon.

  23. I don't know how I managed to let this post slip me! Yes you have beautiful eyes, smile, face, heart AND soul too! You're incredibly beautiful in and out. That lady is awesome! 🙂

Back to the point of the post - when I was younger I had this issue. I was unable to receive. When I was complimented, which was often - especially as a dancer, I would feel incredibly uncomfortable and ashamed. When I looked back and tried to find the source why, I realized that it was because my friends were resentful and jealous of me because I always got the lead dance roles in a ballet concert, or the boy that they like actually liked me. So they spread untrue & painful rumors about me in school and amongst themselves, and were generally just being mean like how teenagers can be. So, somewhere around 15-16 years old, I decided to stop shining. And I think that's when I started to die inside.

But the gift I received from those experiences was one called compassion, empathy & kindness. I was so hurt from my own experiences, I decided then never to participate in gossip or rumor-mongering, that I was above tearing anyone down & I would always be kind to everyone, no matter their background.

And sometime around 29-30, I decided to allow myself to receive the gift of someone's belief & faith in me - someone that gave me the permission to shine again. And that was you rocksta. Your life itself is a living testimony of the magic that can happen when you give yourself the gift of shining the brightest that you can be. I love you so much. Thank you for all you do.

    1.  @Jamie Loh First time you wrote that much - and some of us here know what you "talk" about.Tthanks for opening up!

    2.  @Jamie Loh wow, so it's not only me shutting down and feeling ashamed for compliments. Thanks for sharing Jamie.
I also felt arrogant when I was proud of myself, but just recently I have found this quote from a German Actor (literally translated): "Standard (french: "Niveau) only looks like arrogance from beneath".

      I really like that.
