The Real Message You Are Sending

Posted By: Randy GageMarch 20, 2015

A new gourmet ice cream shop opened up on the ground floor of my condo. That was two months ago, and I still haven’t gone in. Today as I was walking past it for at least the 20th time, it dawned on my why…

My willpower is good, but it ain’t that good. Today I noticed the signage in the front. The big picture window on the left says, SORRY PETS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE STORE. The big picture window on the right says, RESTROOM ARE FOR CUSTOMERS ONLY!

It might be simpler if they just wrote, STAY THE FUCK OUT!

We all have two messages: One, the message we think and hope we are sending to our clients and prospects. (Or family and friends.) And second, the message they are actually receiving.

So which message are you really sending out?

  1. Yeah but how's the ice cream RG? Lol. I get the point and have been thinking a lot about this lately as I work on a Transmedia story world concept. Cherry Garcia all the way dude!

  2. Hmmm.....an excellent insight and question, Randy.  Thank you.  Sometimes things happen and we have to work hard to put the "Open: sign back up again.  We end up restricting some folks because we see a previous pattern in them that equated to pain for us.  Perhaps your ice cream folks have had bad experiences so they shut everyone out from the offending group.  As for me, I am learning to discern how not to let everyone in because not everyone has my best intention at heart ( a hard-won lesson).  That is a good thing really.  We call this boundaries.  Not walls, just boundaries.  Great question worth more pondering on my end.  Thank you for sharing what you do; it is appreciated.

  3. I've been trying to figure that very thing out lately. If I'm not conveying the message I want, how do I change it?

  4. Thanks for the post! It hit me in the eye! I am right now fighting for my fallback to victimhood....
I have been trying to act or appear positive, but I have only felt sorry for my self and not taking RESPONSIBILITY! I've had some shitty months with not seeing on one eye and lots Of internal bleedings on the other. Money issues because I am not working etc.. This has done so that I can't work and can't read, and Of course not be driving around.
But should I sit down and give up like I have been doing tha last few months... No!
I realised waking up at 0530 that, I need to get up, get out and walk, do something about this myself! Yesterday I picked up your Why You're Dumb, sick and broke. To get some inspiration again! It helps! But trying to read malkes me want your soundbooks! But the videos is a great tool!
Thank you for the recent posts and your great work, it sure makes a difference for me!
I MUST TAKE THE RESPONSIBILITY TO TAKE ACTION!

  5. Ha! Very true. What is our sub conscious really sending out to others. If I had an Ice Cream parlour I would have a sign "All dieters welcome to give in to cravings here".

  6. LucindaRoses The best help for this is having one or two people who you trust and who love you enough to tell you the truth.  Ask them what message they are really receiving from you.  -RG

  7. I would guess that the reality of the message that we aww sending out would be mirrored by the results that we are actually achieving. So if we are not getting the results that we are seeking, we should probably start looking at the message we are sending out.
Change the message, change the results!!
    Great message, Randy!

  8. I agree ,you shouldnt judge people u dont know how they're life was like,so just treat them how ud treat anyone else ,with kindness and respect.being kind will take you far.

  9. OeyvindThorvaldsen Responsibility is key, and it's crucial that you're mindful about not beating yourself up over it (that's the underhanded trick our egos reach for).  We all encounter resistance. It's what I write about a lot myself.  Check out my post http://openingtothepossibility.com/owning-it-the-end-of-hiding/ for more thoughts on the subject.

  10. Reminds me of the recruitment flyers that bands used to post on the bulletin boards in the local guitar shops. The bands were sick of dealing with flaky members who quit or had to be thrown out, so they'd write "NO FLAKES!!!" in huge letters on the flyers. All the talented and responsible musicians were secretly afraid they might be flakes, but real flakes thought they were maverick geniuses, so those band got nobody but flakes responding to the flyers. (And none of them were Flake Lorenz 🙂

  11. Some people shouldn't be in business... I just love the books shops who display the sign " This is NOT a library... but the book if you want to read it"
