Prudence or Panic?

Posted By: Randy GageOctober 5, 2009

Back when I was doing my coaching program I got an interesting question from one of the participants.  He said, “My father (who means well) keeps on emailing and mentioning to me that I should be reading all these books about the upcoming oil crises and that the oil reserves throughout the world are being depleted.  In the books my father mentions that there is going to be a severe depression due to the severe increase in oil prices that will cause everything else to increase in costs.

“Honestly I do not want to read these types of books or this type of news.... I am trying to tell my father I am not interested, and he thinks I am being ridiculous for not realizing what is going on and that I should prepare for the future depression.”
So what do you think?  Wouldn’t it be prudent to know what may happen in the marketplace and prepare yourself?  Or is this just negative thought mongering?"

Here is my take on all this:

I never want to operate on fear, because I feel that decisions done out of fear are not for my highest good.  I am not opposed to understanding the facts about a marketplace and responding accordingly.  For instance I would invest in real estate in an area I believe will be going up in value.  And I would invest in a currency that I think will go up, based on other factors in the world.

So I might read one book of the upcoming oil crisis.  Doubtful, but possible.  But I certainly wouldn’t get obsessed with it.  Can you figure out why?  Think about it, and I’ll tell you in the next post.

  1. I have an idea. What if we all stopped freaking out about stuff we have no control over and started taking care of what we do have control of? I don't know about anybody else but I can't change the world if I won't try to fix what's wrong in my own little corner of it.

  2. An obsession is an irrational, overreaction to something. So while I agree Randy that it's good to be informed so that we can take advantage of potential investment opportunities, getting caught up in the lack and fear of shortage is not for our highest good and may well affect our mindset overall.

  3. If we believe the naysayers and the prophets of doom, the conversation admits of no possibility of a way out.

All the energy will be concentrated on being right about the disastrous future and as our need to be right boils over, we will actually do everything to make the prophesied future come true!

If we read such views and refuse to believe it, we can still assimiliate whatever facts that may be presented, but we reserve our option to figure an alternative future.

When we choose not to submit to the fear mongering, we maintain our human prerogative, our inborn ingenuity and resilience to come out on top!

That's why giving in to fear will result in a self-fulfilling trap but holding strong against the fear will win us our freedom and our lives.

  4. Years ago in a time of depression Russia was the only nation that did not allow the news of doom infiltrate their country. They forbid their media to air anything of the sorts.

While it was a communist country, every nation that focused on the doom panicked and spiraled into the negative.

We, as leaders, are accountable to know what is happening. That accountability is not to create negative, but to educate on the truth and provide answers. We can prosper, while others panic.

Take a lesson from history....chicken little!
Thanks again Randy for a great article.

  5. -RG,

Yes I do think that one must be aware of the negative news that is happening. It's what you do with it that matters.

I don't let it cause fear in my life. I just see it as information and act accordingly.

  6. The best way to prepare for any depression is to build a recession proof business.
To build a business you need to drive somewhere sometimes.
    You need an energy-consuming car.
The car manufacturing industry will provide us with vehicles
that use the most abundant, efficient and economical sources of energy at all times, good and bad. These sources are changing for sure. Let them take care of that.
Build your business and life, drive and fly where you need to, and do not waste your energies worrying.

  7. Totally agreed with Douglas and James Ray ,
Thanks for RG for this great article , it reminds me to think before i leap ...

  8. Good question, from my perspective I've learned that the more one obsesses over a particular situation, the more energy you are giving it to fuel the fire sort of speaking.

I agree on being informed, but being informed, and obsessing are two different things.

Before I read your response to that participant, I did the exercise of asking myself the very same question - and answer it. The good news is we have exactly the same mindset, my friend!
