Prosperity through Right Thinking

Posted By: Randy GageDecember 28, 2010

The word for the day is repose.  Not a word you hear much today.  But you see it a lot when you study the works of James Allen.  The definition is a vital one for prosperity...

It means peace of mind, tranquility, and composure.  And peace of mind comes from right thinking.  It’s an inside job; not something anyone else can do for you.

We’re all made up of our habits, and our habits spring forth from our thoughts.  The essential difference between a wise person and a fool is the nature of their thoughts.  The wise person controls his or her thinking.  The fool is controlled by his or her thoughts.

To be happy, you actually have to determine how and what you’re going to think about and not allow external influences to divert you from your main purpose.  A fool is carried away by every errant thought, going through life a helpless tool of impulse, whim, and desire.

The trick is finding the balance…

We want to be driven by purpose.  But the danger is becoming boring, robotic, and programmed.  One thing is sure:  if your life is boring, it is not the life you were meant to live.

It’s okay to desire things and be moved by passion.  But the person who is controlled by passion ends up cheating on their spouse, chasing material things with no satiation, or continually searching the next elusive high through drugs.

Thoughtlessness is always the companion to failure, unhappiness, and anxiety.  Right thinking is always the bodyguard of harmony, happiness, and repose.

So what are some of the ways you keep your thinking on track?  Please share your insights below and next post we’ll explore this deeper.

  1. Fantastic blog Randy. Its funny I just shared a quote on FB that touches on all this. "We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life, is when men are afraid of the Light." - Plato. Habit is a terrible thing sometimes. Especially when its destructive. But in answer to your question, when my thoughts start getting the better of me, I take time out to lay down and purposefully think on good things. Family is one for me, especially my children. I look on them and I am immediately grateful, and feel blessed to have been given the honor of raising these little ones.

  2. R -

I have to admit... I've gone a lot of my life with no 'real' direction. I was always sure of WHAT I wanted, but never approached things right or thought about things in a way that brought those life changes about. I was always wondering why things weren't working. Once I realized I was getting in my own way - with the way I was thinking about things AND in how I was approaching people and my business- and got OUT of my own way ... things became crystal clear!

I'm happy to say that by surrounding myself with like-minded business people via my community, twitter, FB and mostly, by submerging myself in wonderful sites such as this and getting myself thinking and feeling in a right way -things are getting better every single day!

It took some time to get my thinking straight and fine-tune things... but I'm getting there!

Thanks for the great post. 🙂

  3. Many of us were raised with thoughts of lack and loss. The "What If" syndrome. That is the main habit I have been working on to change. My imagination is very good at creating a story that is bad.

So actively working on creating the positive exciting stories I want to see into reality. Then taking the actions towards that. Even if I don't always get what I want its still better than those old dreams!

    1. Hi Lynda ... man can I identify. I was considered a 'rebel' and it was not until a couple years ago I realized that the 'Pied Piper' my parents warned me about was actually my 'angel/spirit guides' ... too bad it takes us so long to figure it out and that we become 'mirrors' of everyone else's expectation of what we 'should' be rather than taught to 'follow our bliss' (in the words of Joseph Campbell).

  4. These are some of the ways I keep my thinking on track:

Making time for my own imagination...to visualize ideals. Daily.

Redirecting my thoughts into prayer if I find them unproductively worrying about something.

Exercising daily...my mind loves oxygen! When it has more oxygen my thoughts tend to be more uplifting. Same thing with sunlight...my mind loves sunlight too.

Experiencing connection with others that are growing....sharing with uplifting people.

Spring and fall cleaning and decluttering even in the winter...that always helps.

Avoid extreme thinking or drastic changes...that usually sets me up for anger. Even when it's based on a positive change...extreme makeovers tend to have a strong temptation to fall backwards or become unproductively angry at others if you are unable to independently support the changes you seek. For myself; consistent goals and steps toward them in compassionate ways while fully intending on supporting them myself. Shared support is a bonus...but if it's not there then I am still ok.

    1. ps...feel the need to clarify...extreme decisions based on anger often are not good..but extreme changes that are based on good....that's a different animal and that's ok. 🙂

  5. Just recently I have gotten to the point where holding a resistant thought gives me an almost physical pain in the head. It may be a little hypersensitive, but it sure is useful!

  6. Some of the things that keep me in the right thinking ... lets see

    1. Daily prayer and meditation
    2. Daily positive reading
    3. Physical exercise
    4. Being open to positive, constructive comments from those close to me whom I admire
    5. Learning something new every day
    6. Keeping a playful mentality (don't taking things too personaly or too seriously ... my 12 months old son is my best teacher at that!)
    7. And offcourse ... reading this blog daily! 🙂

    1. Excelente Jose, tu y yo hacemos las mismas cosas todos los días. Aunque soy una persona agradecida y bendecida, mi espacio de Oración no es el mejor hoy en día, es algo que tengo que mejorar.

  7. Thanks for great information Randy.

I have been wondering why I sometimes feel so down and unhappy to the extent that I wish I could be born as someone else. Now I understand that my happiness resulted from my thoughts.

I actually made myself unhappy by determining how and what I'm thinking about and by allowing external influences to divert me from my main purpose. I had concentrated on things that makes me unhappy and by pass to appreciate little things that really makes me happy.

I also like this statement "The essential difference between a wise person and a fool is the nature of their thoughts. The wise person controls his or her thinking. The fool is controlled by his or her thoughts".

  8. The habit I have developed is starting each day with prayer & meditation. It sets the tone for my day and it is the most profitably thing I do for all areas of my life. My goal/intention is, "I allow myself to feel happy and peaceful all day, with ease." Everything flows from this state of being. Of course, I get sidetracked so I call "timeouts" throughout the day and "practice the Presence" to get myself centered. Inspiring books, audios, people, exercise and conscious breathing play a major role, as well.

  9. In my life recently, I've been learning that success in one area creates parallel good/creative/productive/possibility-oriented habits in other areas. For example, my wife and I just won a 10-week Ultimate Weight Loss Challenge at our gym (1st and 2nd place). That has boosted our confidence and caused us to adopt even more aggressive health and wellness habits. And since it changed what we BELIEVED we were possible of achieving, we suddenly looked at another goal, speaking conversational Spanish. I just bought Rosetta Stone for Spanish for my wife and I. We will begin learning in the new year. And then...a friend challenged me to run a marathon with him in 2011. I said yes. So, achievement and confidence opens the mind to more achievement possibilities. That appears to be the lesson for me for the year.

  10. Everyone has to find their own routine. Something that 'balances' them on the edge with a bit of stretch involved. I follow 'bread crumbs' each day. When I lose the trail I am out of balance. I see a number of 'bread trucks' this next year and they are getting real close.

I awake at 4am. I holosync daily for an hour to expand my ability to tolerate more 'stress' and I add another hour of Og Mandino, Bob Proctor or some other speaker on cd whose topic matches up with my current reading.

I walk up the mountain and back down each morning for an hour and take the goals and tasks for the day to imagine how they will play. 3 or 4 days a week I have a morning 'coaching' call before breakfast. The days without coaching calls are extra time to read and a couple pages of scripture daily is mixed in here too.

After breakfast I look over the days schedule, spend time appreciating the opportunities and then follow the bread crumbs. Many days I pass through here and a few other 'blogs' of wisdom.

There is always much to do, more than a day’s worth usually plus the opportunities to enjoy or be upset with life's little interruptions. I pull out my list of quotes, to add from the days reading and to scan for clues for moving along the bread crumb trail. I usually have two books with a 100 page total goal read for the day. Many moments appear where a page or two is the perfect break. My tendency is to become so absorbed I lose an afternoon in a single project and would have been better served taking a couple short breaks.

The evenings often have their own agenda and many of my best conversations happen in the evening. I wind down the day between 9 and 10 to organize the next day’s opportunities writing them down before I take time to relax before I move to bed.

  11. Excellent post, loved it.

I have found in my own personal journey that working with EFT (emotional freedom technique) has been a tool that has allowed me to clear out a lot of the sub conscious programming and limiting beliefs which tend to sabotage any effort to make changes.

Clearly, what I learned was that it was essential to control my thoughts and not have thoughts control me. I especially enjoyed reading the comment above by Eve it shows a real determination to move forward and achieve the goals she has set for herself.

    Thanks for this post.

  12. To keep my mind in the right thinking I read books of positive thinking 30 minutes min, I read every day three web sites, randygage.com, networkmarketingtimes.com, and networkmarketingpro.com, I always listen the my mentor and keep the focus. I don't watch tv any more jaja, I used to watch 4/5 hours a day (I can not beleave so valuable time that I lost). I always start thinking in the good things in my life, like my wife, my children, etc. 🙂 Regards to all

  13. I find I don't have to work so hard at controlling my "every errant thought" if my beliefs are serving me. For example, if I believe it's going to be a bad day, I'm going to have a surplus of negative thoughts. (And probably a bad day as a result, if I don't do something about it.) I have to watch myself and work to turn my negative thoughts to positive ones.

But if I believe it's going to be a good day, I automatically have fewer negative thoughts to control. So it's more effective to change my beliefs than to change my thoughts. (Unfortunately, it's also harder.)

  14. I have found your teachings about a month ago so I keep my face rooted in what you are saying Randy Gage. I am also reading other authors and journaling. I use to journal my feelings and emotions and not saying that is wrong but I decided to start writing what I wanted to see instead of repeating the broke down mess that was actually going on. There is more but all of this has helped me in my mind and in my responses to adversity. I am grateful for you Randy Gage.

  15. Another excellent post and great comments, thanks!

Particularly at this time of year, I'm making time over the next few days to reflect on the Highlights of my 2010 Journal, keeping the lessons on things that didn't go so well and getting completion on the things I've overlooked. The past is over. I want to start 2011 afresh with new & fewer focused goals.

This works for me and keeps me on track.

Henry James observed: "Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task."

What do you have to complete before the end of this year so that you can free your mind and move on?

  16. "Give me the control of a nation's money supply and I care not who makes the laws."
    Mayer Amschel Rothschild (1744 - 1812 AD)

With conscious access to Universal Law and knowing how to use it, I care not who might seem to have control of the money supply, laws of nations or whatever it may be.

  17. In order to keep 'right thinking', I find that being in the moment, or as we all know, Be Here Now, is very important. Also I do not let others influence my thinking but instead, focus on what's possible. Also maintaining an Attitude of Gratitude keeps my head on 'straight' and in touch with the flow.

Regular exercise, reading books that inspire or entertain, maintaining my vision and purpose and creating are all good 'exercises' for right thinking. I'm sure there are others I haven't mentioned here, but for now, these are the ways I maintain Who I Really Am.

    Thanks Randy!

  18. We tend to be creatures of habit, and feel comfortable in daily routines. I try to step back every so often to take a look at my activities and routines. Even though I feel as if I'm working at a high level, I notice many times that I have fallen into a routine that has almost become robotic. I heard a saying a while back, "find a groove and it becomes a grave". When I notice that I need a change or to take it up an notch, I work to try and stay out of my comfort zone. In other words, get comfortable with being uncomfortable. I find that this mentality forces me to stay focused on the bigger picture, keep my thinking on track and congruent, and think with more clarity.

  19. Started reading Think and Grow Rich no exageration Maybe 25 years ago. this year with John Assarafs Help, I havent figured it all out but kinda on the way,
Basically the principle is most of us have thousands of thoughts per day,! We choose what we focus on! why or how we can or we can't do something,

Its up to us to repeat, yes all day long the good thing we want to focus on, this gives us controll of our thoughts and access to answers that we would not have if we were focused on lack.

Basically we need to choose some really great thoughts and repeat them over and over untlill we manifest them from thought to plan to reality. also
Hanging around positive people that Get results and are not negative is very helpful as well.

  20. My process for remaining on track towards my destiny is:
Remaining in communication with God for divine guidance.
Not being afraid to pursue those things revealed in quiet time of reflection and meditation with God.
Remembering that if I must undertake something new that others don't understand or support--I MUST be willing to do it alone and then DO IT!
Aligning all endeavors with my purpose--if it conflicts with the core of my family, ministry then I let it go. Any business venture/enterprise that doesn't support the health and well-being of my first priorities are not ventures/enterprises that I m willing to pursue.
Applying these steps daily keeps me balanced and focused.

  21. 1. Getting enough sleep for starters.
    2. Eating well & taking my time to get ready in the morning so that I can leave the house looking good and feeling great.
    3. Exercising and/or engaging in a hobby
    4. Reading newsletters, blogs and books
    5. Studying
    6. In summer, lying in the sun for a little while reading.
    7. Reading affirmations
    8. Closing my eyes and day dreaming.

  22. I check my thoughts or actions asking myself “Does this lead me to achieve my main purpose?” The answer is a good guide. If this can be deemed as thoughts control, then I’m happy I’m in the group of wise people )))

  23. -RG,

In this day of info-overload I find myself doing a mental data-dump.

I don't have time to do everything I need to do, or want to do. Instead I focus on the highest priority things them do them well.

    -DJM

  24. May I share one of my mantra's with you...I do not automatically believe what others tell me and have my own mind. I have inner strength and my beliefs are as valid as anybody elses.

  25. There are some great habits and ideas here, and I do some of the same as many of the other readers.

Something additional for me - I have adopted the ritual of listening to a 20 minute tape every morning before I start my day. Instead of it being a recording of someone else's good stuff (which I make time for whenever possible!) it is a recording I made of my own voice reading aloud the description of what an absolutely ideal day in my life would look and feel like. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s very impactful and full of colorful, descriptive details. I even made sure to record it with music in the background that creates a mood and emotions that really help me to put myself into this picture in my mind. I close my eyes and visualize while I listen.

When I do this before anything else, then I find it sets the tone for all the thoughts that will follow for the rest of the day, since I am already immersed in the energy of where I ultimately want to be. I tend run everything through the perspective of my best potential, rather than to just react randomly. I put things through the filter of the ideal life I am building and ask, does this thought serve my vision? Does this person fit in my vision? Does this idea bring me closer to my vision? It really helps me to stay on track to get where I want to go.

  26. I don't see how purpose would necessarily lead to being boring and robotic. This reminds me of a passage in DS&B in the chapter of selfishness - to live your life with purpose, reason, and self esteem. To have a purpose which is the long term perpetuation of your own happiness. By virtue of reason you control your thoughts. If you have a purpose then your thoughts should likely be congruent to serving you. Giving in to the wrong impulses , whims , and desires can actually be life threatening. If one has a purpose they are less likely to be swayed by these.

  27. I took a few days off to write my goals for the new year and another thing I do at the end of the year is to read, Napolean Hill's " think and grow rich". Every time I read the book, it takes my energy through the roof. I hope that you add this to your goals for the year, to read it for the first time, or reread it. It's a book, like, "as a man thinketh, and, "a course in miracles", that I can't seem to get enough of . Think and grow rich has all the formula's to obtain prosperity. I hope everyone takes time to not only read it but take ACTION on it. Happy New Year!!!!

  28. It has been a journey!! All those things people are mentioning above: meditation, exercise, prayer... and I must add - fasting, does miracles. Toxic thoughts seem to leave with other toxic build up in the body... and I'm talking about depriving from food for couple days or more.

Right now I notice my thoughts... what ever comes up, it get's my attention, so I will not be carried away by the flow of them.

Thought is a messenger, it shows what's in the field... like a UPS guy showing up at your door. We don't need to move in with the guy. They come and go bringing messages... that's it.
If you like the UPS guy - ask him/her for coffee if they seem to be the right one - marry them and keep them around 🙂 so your life becomes your thoughts - the ones you CHOOSE!
    Lovely ay?

    Sunshine to all

  29. RG,

I love today's post very much. Thank you. It's deep. It's something we should take the time and sit down to think about a little further.

"So what are some of the ways you keep your thinking on track?"

The realization of who our God/Creator is and who we are in our Creator, and that He created each one of us for his good purposes and that we need to respect and love ourselves before extending ourselves to others seem to help put my right thinking back on the track, when I find myself sidetracked (it's not always easy though), and I begin to find myself respecting and loving myself more and at the same time thanking Him for what and whom He is bringing to my life for me to grow as a person. I am being aware God seems to bring new friends, peace, success, happiness, joy, rest to our soul, when we allow ourselves to have the thoughtful /loving attitude toward others. I'm learning to choose joy, as one of your (RG) affirmations stated before, smile more even no one is around, meditate/pray more often, and also to read inspiring books. I feel that what appears to be negative things may be the gifts from God after all and the opportunities for me to grow in faith and in love, as well as the opportunities to go up to the next level of turning negative things around to positive things.

    -Saach

  30. Randy, I like your post. However, a wise person knows when to play the fool. A wise person knows when to surrender their control and when to take it back. Losing control now and then can sometimes lead to enlightenment.

  31. I have enjoyed everyone's comments to this post. For me, it's simply ... "Be Still ... Stop Thinking (Meditation/prayer) ... Feel ... Visualize ... Take Action (reading, writing or taking action in that 'thing' you want to do) and certainly fasting somewhere along the line.

I'm a bit confused about your statement, "It’s okay to desire things and be moved by passion. But the person who is controlled by passion ends up cheating on their spouse, chasing material things with no satiation, or continually searching the next elusive high through drugs."

Most of my life I 'feared' my passions because of a haunting from the spirits of my ancestors that said 'passions' were the Pied Piper leading me to a certain doom.

Avoiding my passions, most of my life has been spent (excuse my 'French' but ) in the toilet. Once I began identifying my passions, my life began to change so I would have to add 'FINDING' my passion as one of my ways of keeping on track.

It's a bit humorous as well, Randy, because I am not a 'blog' follower and what attracted me to your blog is the 'passion' for what you do I feel coming through in your writing. 😉

  32. I find that I help myself keep my thinking on track when I review my goals briefly in the morning every day. And when I re-write them in the morning it helps me re-focus myself so I know what direction to move in that day. (By re-writing my goals, I mean briefly re-write them, not re-write a novel or anything like that).

  33. Good Evening Randy

Thanks so much for your insightful wisdom. I have been listening to Dr Bruce Lipton based on you simply mentioning him. I also stumbled upon Rob Williams "Psychology of Change" as well. This has helped me greatfully break down limiting beliefs more so than the religious "church" establishment has ever done. Within 2-5 minutes I have dealt with limiting beliefs and thought patterns that have held me back for a very long time. Thanks so much for just being you and helping me to.....Think for a Change. Scott Allen Kane

  34. I keep my thoughts and influences in check by devising a 1 to 3 step code that encompasses the current challenge.

For instance, if something is coming up the road, I'm not sure of it's positive or negative but I have a hunch it will be instructive, I have this code to keep me ready to engage while staying on track:

    1. I take my cues from providence (and not external pulls).
    2. Stay true to my structure (my daily habits of meditation and connection).
    3. Stay close to the observer (the reasoned witness to my feelings and actions).

I stay true to the code, anything flying at me will go just as it should be.

    Thanks for the discussion!

  35. Thank you all for sharing these powerful messages. I've known about this for quite some time (not for bragging purposes :-D) but my issue has been acting or keeping focus on this kind of stuff with so much distraction. Noise is what I call it. I plan to visit this site once a day over the next 21 days instead of smoking between work breaks. This should put me on the right track. Out of sight out of mind... so i'll do just the opposite.

Good Luck and Prosperity to everyone.

Love your Work Randy! Happy Holidays
